Maravo's Third Law

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 6:42 am

I was doing the Aleswell quest, and reading through Ancotar's dialogue, when he mentioned something about "Maravo's Third Law".

Any explanation on what this is?

Both Google and TIL's search turn up nothing, so it looks like it's nothing more than a name.

Maravo's third law states that when you take beer before liquor, you'll never be sicker.

Yeah, it's just some stuff made up on the spot, but didn't it have to do with limitations on spell durations?

I think it's supposed to deal specifically with the impossibility to create an invisibility effect of infinite duration. Probably something like it would cost an infinite amount of magicka.

It would be nice if Bethesda revisited this odd reference later on and created a book or something in regards to it -prehaps a book written by Ancotar on his findings and the relations to Maravo's Third Law.

And I beleive the law was specific to only invisibility spells, as there are spells/magic in the world of TES that are already limitless (an example would be magical items with a constant effect).

However you look at it, it's still an interesting piece of lore :)

I think it's just one little reference Bethesda put in there to make the character sound like someone who really knows what he is talking about, it would be nice if, in later games, Bethesda decides to elaborate on this, though., it does certainly give some potential for new lore.

Ah, a fellow mage! Please excuse my rudeness earlier. I find most people extremely tedious. Completely ignorant of the arcane.
I came out here to get some privacy for my research. Instead, I was constantly bothered by the local peasantry!
"The explosions are scaring the sheep" or "A plague of rats ate all our crops." Every day another complaint!
No understanding of the pitfalls of experimental magic! Finally, I decided that permanent invisibility was the only way to get some peace and quiet.
I know! You're about to quote Vanto's Third Law... don't worry! I have not actually found a way to violate the Conservation of Perception!
The invisibility is not actually permanent. You can tell the villagers not to worry, it will wear off eventually.

And yet I made a ring with CE Invisibility in TES III. :hehe:

And it didn't work because you'd do something and POOF! you'd be visible again.
