Mark and Recall

Post » Mon Jul 11, 2011 11:12 am

Hey im new. not really a forum user but i was driving home from work earlier and something came to me. why i believe there is no mark and recall or divine intervention is the jails. escaping from jails would be easy and there would be no need for jails unless mages built some barrier or something. its probably a dumb idea but it makes sense to me.

It's not just jails. Mark and Recall could be used a lot in Morrowind for activities that can only be described as exploits. A good example is the Temple quest where you must traverse the entire continent without talking to anyone, which rules out using silt striders or boats to fast-travel your way there. You could meta-game your way out of it by Marking your destination before accepting the quest (note that this requires fore-knowledge of the quest), fast-travelling to the quest giver, then Recalling yourself to your destination. It was a really good, unique quest that could be ruined with Mark and a bit of meta-gaming. That's not to say that Mark and Recall were bad things, and there was nothing forcing you to abuse Mark and Recall in this manner, but it's hardly ideal to have such quest-breaking functionality in place.

I remember doing that.

I can understand mark and recall being out, but I do wish we still had local teleport. Why swim, when you can teleport.

This is prevented simply by using one of those shackles that slaves in Morrowind wore.

I like this idea. Teleport me to a barracks or shrine or something vague and not specific. On the other hand, however, that is powerful in my opinion because it can be a potential life saver. If I'm fighting a dragon it's either going to kill me or I'm going to kill it. I'm not going to sissy out and quick teleport somewhere. Fast travel should be disabled during battles.

Like Almisivi Intervention or Divine Intervention. I also like it. It is kind of made redundant by the fast-travel system, but if someone were to mod the fast-travel system out, there's no reason why they shouldn't mod such spells back in.

Ah! That is a scenario that has provoked my mind for a while now, 814life.
In my fanfic for my Dark Elf sorceress, upon going to Morrowind to Seyda Neen for the TESIII storyline, she is silenced continuously by Imperial Battlemages who are paid good money by the Empire for their services. You could easily use the same type of thing for the TESV storyline. Your character is in jail in Skyrim for whatever reason, and has been silenced for months.... until now. And then the gameplay begins and you escape.

No it hasn't, has it? The closest thing I've heard of is that dash forward thing.

Magical barriers do exist in lore.
They feature as a plot device in the Poison Song to prevent an antagonist from escaping.

I believe it would be better gameplay if certain dungeons that are above medium level difficulty just utilsed a mechanic like that.
"The ancient magics of this place prevent levitation and teleportation".

Mark and recall are so much more useful for efficient travel as the Oblivion style fast travel was, its not even funny.
It is too bad they will not make a return in Skyrim, it is a step backwards.

Oh, and as a point of note: Making a mark near the shrine on Sheogorath and then teleporting there after you got the quest is not an exploit.
You would have to have done the quest at least once already to know where to mark for one, and that means you are not on your first playthrough.
And anyone that says that on all subsequent playthroughs after the first I have to run the same exact gauntlet as the very first time, Im sorry, but there is really no way I can politely describe that notion.
Its asinine.
That is what makes a game boring, that is what makes me shelve a game more than anything else.
Tedium.
The sheer fact I had the option of, on my hundreth playthrough, to get Gambolpuddy (for instance) while I was in the area instead of when the quest needed me to was one of the reasons I kept playing Morrowind for a decade.
Freedom.

I don't think Ben knows what he's talking about........ he's has to be referring to that dragon shout that moves you a length of a football field at a time, like those psychics witches in chronicle of Ridike. If I am wrong, that will probually be one of the biggest positives so far.
