Markarth (Side) a Dwemer city?

Post » Tue May 17, 2011 11:36 am

I wanted to read Dwemer :(

It seems like the Dwemer will be changed to LOTR type dwarves...

Well just because they are stone on the outside doesn't mean they won't have their pipes and mechanical doors on the inside.

It could be a repurposed ruin

This. Todd said that the men moved into the dwarven cities and built their cities on top of them. So for all we know the stone architecture are those of men while underneath the city is the entrance to the underground Dwemer ruins.

I think what he meant is that Cyrodiil was supposed to be a jungle (according to lore), but in Oblivion it was a more like a typical LotR setting with a temperate climate. So now the Dwemer were changed into Dwarves and instead of their mechanical style buildings with lots of machines etc they now look like typical LotR dwarves. I agree that the screenshot looks more like a traditional Dwarven ruin from a generic fantasy setting than something that I would expect from a Dwemer ruin.

I'm not 100% sure that's what he meant though.

No, in the lore it was originally a jungle but Tiber Septim, one of The Nine, changed Cyrodiil into a temperate climate. Thus is the power of a god.

Markarth Side may have been built on top of Dwemer ruins.

They should at least look similar. The Markath picture looks nothing like either the Morrowind or Hammerfell Dwemer (which were not identical, but shared many important elements).

Even with the lack of metal, I feel like the structure does bare resemblance to the stone elements of the Dwemer ruins from Morrowind.

Its similar, but with more complexity(probably because they can add more complexity to it now) but it still has the rounded domes and tops, lots of buttress-like supports, and of course both are built into the tops/sides of mountains/rocks. It still features towers, although fairly different, they are similar as well. The towers in Morrowind looked like they were made from stone with metal tops. Its not a completely different look.

Until an actual dev/environment artist confirms this, I'm not believing that's Dwemer architecture.

I've been thinking, and I'm probably way off, but perhaps Markarth is the name of the large canyon? That could go some way as to explaining Markarth Side's name too - it's a city built on the sides of Markarth. This would mean that the ruin in the picture could simply be a different part of Markarth. Sorry if this has been brought up before, or if I'm just plain wrong

This sounds right.

Its hard to tell from the map we have, but Markarth Side (the city) does not appear to be in a canyon or anything, although it is on a river.

It is possible that Markarth Ruins are seperate from Markarth Side, but located in the same general area.

Yea, but he has already confirmed many other parts of the game, why would he be wrong about this? If he didn't know for sure, he wouldn't have answered.

Here's the inside of some Redguard ones for comparison:

I think there might be some resemblence. From what I remember the ruins in that game had less of the utilitarian factory look than the ones from Morrowind, and this is closer to Hammerfell.

I certainly hope that is a misunderstanding, I rather liked Dwemer as they where - a house of dark elves. If they suddenly turned form elven inventors in to stone cutting dwarfs for every other game I'll be... Very, very disappointed I meant that just flushes all lore and the worlds back story down the drain :( After all that garbage in Oblivion hacking even more of the world uniqueness away? That'll be just plain wrong.

Can't really say Oblivion did anything like that. As was previously mentioned Tiber Septim changed Cyrodiil from a Jungle to a temperate climate. It all fit within the lore. And as such, the game has to fit the area the game is set in. Just like should a game every take place in Elsewyr, people will talk about how it how it is a dark and ugly place with no variety as it only really features two types of places.

The Dwemer never were a Chimeri house. They were a completly unrelated Merish race.

I'm not seeing it, sorry. The domes and buttresses look more like Shivering Isles architecture. The stone ribs of the roof, in particular, throw me off.

To me it's just the tower that looks out of place, there were stone structures jutting out of the ground in Morrowind, they were just buried more, but that tower doesn't look quite right.

On another note, does anyone have an image of dwarven structures from Daggerfall? I can't find one on google.

From my memory most Dwemer structures in Morrowind were pointed, rather than round.
I can live with these being Dwemer ruins, I just don't see much resemblance. Aside from the tops shese are more ornate, use more stone (and significantly less metal) and generally have a less industrial and functional look

a house of dark elves
They were gold skinned Mer. Back when they were around no 'Dark Elves' or Dunmer existed.

I still hope I get to see some really copper-looking dwemer ruins...
Would be awesome.

Would be so cool to see the difference of graphics between Skyrim's and Morrowind's :)

who knows, maybe they just built those at different times!
just look at us for example: our architecture changed at lot in the last 300 years. the dwemer probably started building in Skyrim a long while after going through Morrowind.

and anyways, it's only ONE dwemer ruin. maybe they don't all have this type of architecture in the game

I'm not worried. I'll admit, I was expecting the Dwarven city to be Riften, but it's not that much of a stretch to assume the Rourken clan built cities along the way to Hammerfell. And from what I've seen of Redguard, the Rourken did seem to build with stone more than metal.

Besides, if you look at the screenie of Makarth, you can see a classic metal Dwemer door on that tower.

Still... I was kinda expecting that city to be the starting village. Like, a monastery for the dragon hunters or something.
