Markarth (Side) a Dwemer city?

Post » Tue May 17, 2011 5:16 am

After asked on Twitter if there are Dwemer ruins in Skyrim, Pete Hines answered with a link to the Markarth screenshot.

Does this mean that all known lore is obsolete? First of all the Dwemer never settled near the position of Markarth Side as depicted in the Poket Guide 3rd Edition map (as far as we know). Than the look of the buildings does not resemble anything similar to the Dwemer buildings in Redguard or Morrowind. Last but not least Markarth should be home of the Imperial College of the Voice founded by Tiber Septim. Is an old Dwemer city really the right place for sutch a college?

Well that only furthers my thoughts that the screenshot may not be Markarth Side and instead near Markarth Side. If it is Markarth Side, todd explained that the men settled into Dwemer ruins, making them their own cities.

A possible explanation for this could be that the Dwemer built their regular metallic buildings in Hammerfell and Morrowind because they were hot climates, whereas in Skyrim it is colder and so they used a different method of building. Hell it isn't the most perfect explanation (I have no idea how metal structures would be suitable in hot climates) but it is an explanation.

Edit: Upon reading Sleign's explanation I have decided that his explanation makes more sense than mine. Oh well, I'll leave my explanation up there anyway.

Oh wow, if this means I can fight Centurions again...
This just keeps feeling more and more like Morrowind.

Dwemer ruins were a jungle.
Now we have Dwarven ruins instead!
Seems simple to me.

I've been thinking, and I'm probably way off, but perhaps Markarth is the name of the large canyon? That could go some way as to explaining Markarth Side's name too - it's a city built on the sides of Markarth. This would mean that the ruin in the picture could simply be a different part of Markarth. Sorry if this has been brought up before, or if I'm just plain wrong

I wanted to read Dwemer :(

It seems like the Dwemer will be changed to LOTR type dwarves...

I had a feeling this could be a Dwemer city/ruin. It doesn't look like it at first glance, because there are no obvious mechanical elements, but the ruins in Morrowind did have stone carved structures and elements to them. I have to assume thought that inside we will see more mechanical elements, or something that will relate the environment to the centurions.

Um... People are freaking out because they took a new artistic approach to the ruins? It's hard to believe that ALL Dwemer EVERYWHERE built exactly the same.

She is suggesting that they are making the Dwarves/Dwemer more like Dwarves from LotR or traditional fantasy.

I disagree though, because they still have to find a way to integrate the centurions, which are very much TES Dwemer, into this. We'll have to wait for more info.

I was trying to say that the Dwemer got Tolkien-ified.

I think what he meant is that Cyrodiil was supposed to be a jungle (according to lore), but in Oblivion it was a more like a typical LotR setting with a temperate climate. So now the Dwemer were changed into Dwarves and instead of their mechanical style buildings with lots of machines etc they now look like typical LotR dwarves. I agree that the screenshot looks more like a traditional Dwarven ruin from a generic fantasy setting than something that I would expect from a Dwemer ruin.

I'm not 100% sure that's what he meant though.

Oh, it all makes sense now.
That would be a disappointing though as we've seen what the look like in Morrowind.
I don't think it is a far cry though to say there were different sects of the Dwemer that may have had different ideologies on construction.

One could possible say that the Dwemeri structures we have seen Morrowind were only built as such to make used of the surplus of thermal energy the oh so kind Red mountain provided.

They should at least look similar. The Markath picture looks nothing like either the Morrowind or Hammerfell Dwemer (which were not identical, but shared many important elements).

I'm concerned that I cannot see any metal in this city screenshot. But as far as we know metal was the primary material for the Dwemer.

It looks to me like an observatory - just look at that round tower and compare.

And maybe there aren't many iron ore deposits in Skyrim? So the replacement is stone.

Lore-wise yea. But I think that was more of a technical limitation of the aft-the-time aged Gamebryo engine.
And again, that is a bit different as we have already seen the appearance of Dwemer.

It could be a repurposed ruin  or that's just the outside model, while the inner will likely be what we're used to.
