Markarth Side

Post » Fri Apr 08, 2011 12:21 am

I think the http://static.zenimax.com/bethblog/upload/2011/01/Markarth01.jpg is a shot from the city http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Lore:Markarth_Side.

The name of the picture on Bethblog is "Markarth01.jpg".

It looks like it's built inside some ruins. Possibly dwemer ruins? A city built into dwemer ruins was mentioned in Game Informer, if I'm not mistaken.

Discuss. :P

I think Todd mentioned it one of the interviews from one of the earlier hubdates :P

He mentioned a city built into some dwemer ruins and showed some concept art.

But now know we (probably) know which one.

It doesn't look like an adapted place to live and build a city (one avalanche and it's gone), but it's a nice scenery.

All credit due to Bethesda's level designers: Markarth Side looks like the kind of place I always dreamed of building in Dwarf Fortress. It's incredibly awesome.

Markarth is located much too far to the west to be one of the Dwemer ruins. Remember, the Dwemer were largely contained to Morrowind and Hammerfell.

Possibly it's a city that was devastated in the Oblivion Crisis, like Kvatch and Ald'ruhn.

In the GameInformer article, there's a text box in the corner of the picture saying that "Skyrim is filled with crumbling ruins and ancient cities"....

Which makes me think it's abandoned.... in addition to the obvious dereliction -- just felt this needed to be said here too, since some other people wondered about it in another thread.

You may be right, it does not look populated... and the ruins don't look like how I'd expect dwemer ruins to look. :)

Markarth Side is pretty close to Hammerfell.

This is where the Imperial College of the Voice was supposed to be... looks like something bad happened in the 200 years after Oblivion.

Actually, the one hole I can think of in the "it's Markarth Side" theory is that Markarth Side doesn't look like it's in the mountains.

Possible it's some ruins nearby Markarth Side and the latter's name comes from the former.

EDIT: No, wait, you circled a city in the Reach! Maybe Markarth Side is in the Reach and the western city in Whiterun is something else?

The user speculated map might be wrong then.

The Dwemer aesthetic has fluctuated a bit through Redguard, Morrowind, and Oblivion, but they all had a recognizable denominator. I don't see the screenshot having any relation.

Todd said in a gaminformer interview something like "...dwarfen ruins built into the stone...". Well thats a city built into stone :).
But maybe my memory betrays me.

That architecture does look strangely similar to the ruins in the Shivering Isles. Doesn't look dwemer at all, and doesn't really resemble the supposed concept art of the dwemer city.

This sounds weird, but the architecture reminds me of Anvil in some way. Could be a place close to Hammerfell.

It was only speculation. I believe it may be that city in the Reach now.

Yeah, that actually fits well to me.

And Awia, yes, Dwemer = Dwarves, I think they're called Deep Elves in some texts too.

They are not lasers, they are flame throwers.

Hmmm, still not sure. I agree there's not the crazy irregular look of Morrowind's standard Dwemer ruins, but the roofs... A bit, a bit, allowing for evolution in concept art.

Besides, Todd exactly talked about "epic cities that have been carved in the mountains by the dwarves long ago". Look at the right. Carved in the mountain enough for ya ? :P
