Marketing gimmick?

I have not played Obliviion yet as I am still working through Morrowind, however. I got the 5th anniversay edition for the PC and yesterday in the mail I got the collectors edition (which is in amazing condition, coin still sealed and all) and I noticed something.

How come the Collectors is rated Teen and the Anniversay Edition is rated Mature?

If you turn them both over on the back they list the same things.

Did they change it from Teen ot Mature to sell more copies?

When the first nvde mods for OB came out it prompted the ESRB to take a second look at the game, there were some details that the ESRB didn't see when they first reviewed the game, corpses hanging on the walls in oblivion and the bloody torture chambers under some castles that prompted them to change the rating from T to M, all the copies rated T that hadn't yet sold got a sticker put on them about the Rating change and any copies printed after that just got the M rating printed on the label.

That's the ESRB for you. Those under the "appropriate age" must be protected from "harmful images". [sarcasm] You know, because the real world is such friendly, happy place and nothing bad ever happens there. Why so many people spend so much time avoiding it is a complete mystery. [/sarcasm]

Technically, it should still be rated T for consoles. The nvde mod could only be accessed on the PC. And even that, only if the person was specifically looking for it. But it wasn't those mods that did it. There was some stuff on the CD itself that didn't make it into the game, but was considered bad enough to require a Mature rating. I believe it was nothing more than a couple skins that had textured nipbles on them, but I'm not entirely sure.

I think the nudity prompted ESRB to go back to the game and take a closer look, so they found some of the hidden stuff that one wouldn't find when just quickly playing the main quest.

They're just way too strict. I would be fine with it if their standards were a bit closer to the MPAA's. Most M games would earn PG-13 ratings if they were movies.

Edit:

I think the nudity prompted ESRB to go back to the game and take a closer look, so they found some of the hidden stuff that one wouldn't find when just quickly playing the main quest.

The ESRB doesn't actually play the game they're rating. The publisher just sends them images and videos of the game. Beth just didn't provide them with images/videos of certain things.

But the rating would have been changed anyway because of the mod. That bodies used in that nvde mod weren't created by a modder, They were actually on the game disc. The ESRB treats "locked out" content the same as they would if it were accessible on the disc without mods.
