Marriage and NPC Wardrobe

Post » Tue May 29, 2012 4:38 am

I finally decided to get married, but I'm having a bit of a problem and was hoping someone could help. I married Sylgja from Shor's Stone ( http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Sylgja ), but I'm not a huge fan of her outfit/pickaxe that she's equipped with. She seems intent on keeping an equipped weapon on herself for some reason, and I was able to get rid of the pickaxe by reverse pickpocketing a shiv on her then buying the pickaxe (a shiv seemed like the least visually intrusive weapon I had). However when I reverse pickpocketed fine clothes she didn't put them on. I tried to see if it was like Fallout where companions would only equip gear that has a higher DT than her own, so I reverse pickpocketed some leather armor on her, but that didn't work.

I play on Ps3 so I do not have access to console commands. Is there any way for console players to get NPCs to change outfits? If not I kept a save right before getting married so I could always marry someone else.

Not that I have found or heard about. Pretty lame to walk around your nice house with only crappy clothes on. :)

I'm under the impression that you can take their clothes, leaving them in their underwear.... which is what we are all after anyway.

I think you have to be maxed on pickpocket so you can take equipped items. It takes level 100 on pickpocket to be able to enable this perk.

I'm not sure if after you take their clothes whether or not you can give them different clothes and they will put it on in case you didn't actually want her always in her underwear.

Yikes, my pickpocket is at 18 right now. That would take a ton of grinding just to even test that theory. I don't want to leave her in her underwear, I would just want her to wear something a little more fitting for the wife of a Thane of four Holds.

You could pickpocket the items you want her to wear onto her, and see if she takes them automatically. Alternatively, if she can be recruited as a follower, you could trade items with her and chuck her some fancy gear.

I've been grinding on it for 2 nights now, i'm around 75 pickpocket.... i'll report back. Aside from trying to get my wife naked, I'm pretty happy with my new found pickpocket skills.

Nope. I married one of my stewards and her inventory indicates she's naked, but her image indicates she's wearing the steward armor. I was a little disappointed as I wanted to put her in some fine clothes in which to run the store, but looks like I'm stuck with her as is. Not really a big deal, just a little annoying.

That's what I did with the Shiv, which to be honest didn't make a ton of sense that she even took that considering it does less damage than the pickaxe. She wouldn't equip either the Fine Clothes or the Leather Armor that I reverse pickpocketed though. Also, she's not available as a follower =\

Cool, definitely reply back to this topic when you get the perks to test it out. I'll keep this thread bookmarked.

They seem to revert to their default equipment as they are no longer your follower anymore.

I was a bit disappointed, too. I had prepared by buying some Fine Clothing and making a gold and diamond ring and giving them to Vorstag, and dude was in his barbarian armor for the ceremony.

You apparently can not undress nor change the clothes of any NPC that has a unique/semi-unique skin. This includes Jarls, Housecarls (both theirs and yours), at least some mates, and any other unique kind of character such as the captain of the guard. I can confirm that Ysolda (sp?) can not change clothes. I might be just the merchant spouses that can not, but I'm not sure.

Although I can also confirm that with a 100 pickpocket, you can have every guard in town stripped down to their skivvies until it looks like a gay pride parade in Whiterun. ;)

You certainly can if they can be a follower you just have to give them upgrades to what they wear downside is they only wear them when they following you lol.... lydia prances around following me in forsworn gear lol.

They won't wear clothes because clothes have an armor rating of zero, they will only equip better armor, you can put Lydia in foresworn armor if it's upgraded because it has a better armor rating than her heavy armor, wait wut?, yup true.

That would be fine and dandy except that if you had read my posts it seemed like I semi-debunked this line of thinking for non-follower marriage candidates. What you're describing is the Fallout NPC logic which I'm familiar with, it's why I was able to reverse-pickpocket a White Glove Society dress at Veronica's request but never able to get her to actually wear it. However Sylgja doesn't even wear armor to begin with, she wears Miner's Clothes. It's a let down that I'd have to grind pickpocket to 100 and spend 5 perks just to get my wife to realize that she doesn't live in Shor's Stone and she doesn't work at Redbelly Mine anymore. Oh well, unlike real life I was able to reload the save before the marriage took place.
