^THISI think a distinction could be made for the inclusion of a brothel in which our characters could partake in what's being offered "for sale", and simply a brothel that's more of a place like any other tavern, store, etc. I could very easily see a quest involving "going to speak with Bob, he usually can be found hanging out in the brothel". Then you walk in and Bob's sitting at a table with a busty wench on his lap with others drifting about the room, scantily clad, giggling and chatting up other men.Although I can see why others would be against it, I think it's silly to say there's "no point to it". Is there a point to taverns? Guzzling mead? No, but it's part of someone's roleplaying experience. As others have said, prostitution is the world's oldest profession, and brothels are establishments that have been around for centuries. It is absolutely fitting that they be found in Skyrim.
That's survival...not something humans did for money like prostitution.
Okay, I see where you're going with this now. However, your original argument that hunting/gathering was a "profession" is still wrong. Reward and profession are two different concepts as you cannot call hunting a deer to feed yourself a profession. And trading your deer meat one time for six with a prosttute, also does not make it a profession. However hunting deer all day and selling/trading the meat could be considered a profession. You see the distinction? However, as Neko_Kineko said, "Prostitution is the world's oldest profession" is just a saying. I doubt anyone knows what the first real profession was. And by that logic taverns are a waste of space because some parents think their 13 year olds don't know what getting drunk is? People are going to complain about anything, so why call something a "waste of space" just because someone might complain?
^ EXACTLY! lolFor example, I was over at my sister's house one day and saw my 11 year old nephew playing Grand Theft Auto 3. I asked my sister, "You let him play that?" She replies, "Yeah, he knows not to let "those women" into his car." I say, "You sure?" She says, "Yeah, he just likes running them over on the sidewalk anyway." :facepalm:I think this mentality is why some people say marriage/six/prostitution/brothels have "no place in Skyrim".
I understand what you're saying, but take Dragon Age: Origins as an example. It contained an "interactive" brothel for both men and women, and the game was still hugely popular. I'm sure there was some controversy somewhere, but I never saw any regarding their inclusion of "The Pearl". What's funnier is that a massive percentage of people who absolutely adore that game are women. So, I really don't think prostitution and/or brothels are as big an issue as you would like to think. Not that I'm saying prostitution isn't a controversial issue, but I don't see the inclusion of a brothel in Skyrim as being something that deters people from buying it. How much better is it to have six in movies or books? There's really no difference. It's all entertainment. Some people, for whatever reasons, would be happy never seeing six in any form of entertainment. And others, for whatever reasons, find it more gratifying. For me, it's a natural inclusion to a "role playing" game as six and/or love is typically the most important thing in people's lives. And a setting like Skyrim's that didn't include at least one brothel seems unrealistic to me. These types of establishments are just as normal as taverns in cities throughout history.
lmao...best post of the thread award :trophy: I'm seriously going to need a brothel if my Skyrim husband will only cook for me and not give it up in the bedroom.
We're not talking about what's considered desirable or "PC" by today's standards. We're talking about something that's 1) a part of history, 2) something that is/was commonplace for medieval-type towns & cities to have, 3) a common profession for women of that period/setting to have, and 4) a common setting in a number of books, television and films--Littlefinger's brothel in Game of Thrones as an example. By your logic, all of us TES gamers should also go vist with families of murder victims since we not only seem to not have a problem with murder but in fact glamorize it in some ways. I get the point you're trying to make, but insinuating that anyone who agrees with brothels being in a medieval based fantasy game has some sort of moral deficiency or lack of understanding of what goes on in the real world, is a bit off in my opinion.Just made a correction for you there. I couldn't care less if my relationship was "official" according to a piece of paper.
All of this^
I do not understand the appeal of brothels or six in videogames. How much more fun is it to even do that in a video game?
Not this.
Reading through the thread, I started tagging all the posts to respond to. I went back and remarked these instead. It was easier.
