Do married couples wear wedding rings?

Post » Tue Feb 01, 2011 6:11 pm

So in Tamriel, do couples where wedding rings like in real life? And do men give woman engagement rings like in real life?

I've noticed recently that in the big O couples don't seem to wear rings, I don't remember exactly if they did in little M, but I believe they didn't, and sadly I haven't played the Classic D yet :(

If i'm not mistaken the engagement rings are a christian custom - there's no reason for Tamriel to have the same. Maybe some cults or cultures have it, but it would be odd for every culture and cult of Tamriel to follow it.

Yeah but isn't the Temple of the Nine Divines loosely based off of Chrisianity? Like the churches and monastaries ETC.

I don't see why you couldn't have rings. The customs of standing in front of a priest, exchanging rings, and a veiled bride come from the Romans as far as I know. Tamriel's empire is close enough to that.

i read something about Nibenean couples getting matching tattoos, so that when they lie together the tattoos combine into one large, complete one. or something. not official, but cool.

I've heard that before, and I think it is pretty cool too.

Ha ha yeah I have a vague memory of something like that as well.

But it's probably not the standard way of getting a "token" of their relationship (in lack of better words?!).

Me and my other half have been thinking of getting matching tattoos for some time now.

Actually, I heard it was a Roman custom. I don't recall where; it's been a while.

Logically, no most likely they would be inclined to do the knot ceremony over the rings...

Knot ceremony is where "tying the knot" came from

they would take a piece of silk or cloth what have you, wrap it around each others wrists and the one performing the marriage ceremony would type the two lovers together symbolizing the tying together of lives.

It was more prominent in pagan cultures which would fit elder scrolls lore.

As long as we're observing spoiler tags...
Spoiler
Also, the Sirens robbed Gogan of a ring that was supposedly an heirloom given him by Maelona. Yes, it was a ruse, and the ring was a fake, but the story was considered credible.

 No. The architecture of the "temples" in TESIV is strongly based on the cathedrals constructed in Europe, but the worship of the Eight-and-One Aedra is clearly polytheism.

EDIT: rings and white dresses are so booooooring. There are so many other cultures in the world, I imagine they handle things differently and more creatively.

I'm not sure where it's from but the Nine Divines are frequently called Polytheistic Catholic church. I share your sentiments though, there's got to be more interesting way.

Some people simply make their own vows and that it's. Something like:

I just wanna tell you how Im feeling
Gotta make you understand

Never gonna give you up
Never gonna let you down
Never gonna run around and desert you
Never gonna make you cry
Never gonna say goodbye
Never gonna tell a lie and hurt you

With Cyrodiils for Merchants and Aristocracy I'd imagine there be a bit more elaborate ceremony. Though looking up stuff, there is little variety even in the real thing. :S

I've heard the ring comes as a symbol that the man steals the woman and bound her or something like that. eg [censored] (read forced marriage) or something like that.

Personally I would like to see that in tamriel the wife got a key and the men got a ball and chain around their ankle, to make it more realistic after all.

Ah, but the man can always hit the woman with said ball and chain. The women can only throw the key at him.

Not that this really adds to the conversation, but the Mung from the mountains of Vietnam have an interesting tradition I've always wanted to sneak into a fictional world. The groom (with the bride's permission in this day and age) kidnaps the bride at some point in the night and then the next day, comes over to her fathers house with beer to inform him that the father's daughter is now his.

Can we say that this is how the Nords do it?

I doubt they wear them as Tamriel is diffrent then real life. Saying they have wedding rings in tamriel is like saying they eat chicken in tamriel ( which they don't )
...that made no sense...

I'm gonna have to include this in a mod I'm doing.

Although maybe the women can do it too, given how tough the Nords are in general?

If I remember correctly, the Scots used to do this too. The origin of the "best man" was that you picked a buddy you could most rely upon and kidnapped your bride-to-be. The honeymoon was for the purpose of impregnating the bride, I think I once read.

Maybe the Ra'Gada should have massive South Asian/Bollywood style weddings. :)

I don't like the sounds of this, and I certainly don't want such blatant manipulation and manhandling of women in the real world, nor in a fantasy world. The TES universe has a great level of gender equality, I would hope the celebration and cementation of a monogamous relationship involves each party treating the other with respect. :stare:
