Mars Shot Project

Anyone have any theories on the Mars Shot Project mentioned on the holotape from Arcjet Propulsion? A possible Mars DLC in the future maybe?

Most likely not. The mars shot project wasn't completely finished, hell the thrusters we saw in the building were the prototype and weren't connected to anything. Not to mention even if the mars shot worked it would take years to actually reach Mars and the manpower alone to attach them to a rocket would be costly even for the BoS or Institute with no actual gain.

and that brings up what use would going to Mars actually be

ArcJet was contracted by the USSA (Fallout NASA) to work on the rocket for the Mars Shot mission, which was presumably a mission aimed at sending a man to Mars. Or at leas a rocket. I doubt it has any bearing on anything beyond the background of the ArcJet building itself.

I really liked the Mars shot addition and as the game progressed was disappointed not to see it fleshed out more.

Image if there's an orbiting station up there, watching everything that unfolding down here - it would be great to get up there. Nice bit of DLC? Or was the nuclear exchange part of some bigger plan?

If I have one criticism of the storylines. It's that we have lots of great little subplots, but none of them go very far past the usual terminals.

I think we should get away from the idea of space travel because it just sounds underwhelming to be honest. Zeta tried it and failed pretty much but I can't see a similar situation to Zeta working with something man-made and Zeta 2.0 would be kinda stupid and boring.

Well, we definitely don't want stupid AND boring.

I thought Zeta was ok. It was fun for a play through anyway.

I do think Bethesda could make a really cool sci-fi game on a different planet. Wandering around the Glowing Sea I kept thinking how it might be similar wandering around the surface of Venus and half expected a Xenomorph to pop out and eat my face.

Part of me is like...why go to Mars? Why not? The I stop and think...WHY go to Mars?

The moon might offer potential...there is rumouredly a base there or something...and a little more close to home...

We have the Bright Brotherhood ghouls from New Vegas that head off to a "new world" if you picked the Good Karma decision. It is possible that they went to Mars since they are back to evacuate the people of Novac from the Legion as far as the ending went.

Why go to Mars? There are a few reasons.

Living space for one. Something we are running out of quickly. Some of the biggest wars ever fought were over land for expanding population and land to grow food to feed that population.

Resources is another. Not so much on Mars but in the asteroid belt. Mars would be a stepping stone getting to the belt. A belt full of floating mountains of metal. Lack of resources is what started the nuclear war in the Fallout games.

Mankind is an explorer. If there is nothing to left to explore we tend to channel those skills/energies to more destructive purposes. Not every one likes staying home and raising a family and working a daily job.

Redundancy. If things keep going like they are some megalomaniac politician or religious extremest is going to start a nuclear war, just like in the game, and wipe out civilization as we know it. If we colonize space there is a good chance some of those colonies will survive the war and be able to lead a rebuilding effort.

Then there is the technological gain we will experience in the drive to get to Mars and beyond. Go do a search on things that were invented during the race to orbit then the moon. CAT scanners, cordless power tools, memory foam, and many more came from the space race.
