Marshall optional fire

What exactly does the optional firing mode (secondary fire) do for the marshall, I know it makes your aiming reticle smaller thus making the gun more accurate for better distance spaying, but does it still do the same amount of damage> I've experimented with it a little but can't seem to tell because I either end up hugging the guy and killing them in one shot or am always too far away and have to shoot them 3-4 times to get the kill or they just get away or blast me. Would really appreciate some feedback.

One thing I really miss about the shotgun from Crysis 1 and Warhead was how you could change the fire spread to be narrow, and use an assault scope to make it into a sniper shotgun.

In Crysis 2 the shotgun doesn't have an alternate fire mode like that, and in 3, you either fire the scatter shells or its alternate fire mode is for slugs. That's it.

It's a smaller spread, longer range. So you get more distance and less damage.
