Martial arts for monk-type characters

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 5:33 pm

I felt myself REALLY wanting to play a monk in Oblivion, but the jabbing over and over and over and over again seemed like a really stupid thing to want to do.

Does anybody else think that it would be incredibly awesome to be able to become a skilled weaponless martial artist (Or maybe skilled with a bow staff)? I'm not talking about jabbing people to death, I'm talking about kicks, punches, rolls, flips, and maneuvers used to break bones ie arms, legs, necks. Counters used to disarm your opponent or sneaking up behind them to break their neck is a dream of mine, one that I doubt will be implemented in this game, but one that I hope is considered for future installments.

Yes i"ve wanted realistic hand to hand since morrowind (theres something impressive about a unarmed man/woman beatin 3 heavily armed foes to death with counters and quick reflexes)... here's some hope for you, there better using the state of the art havok behavior engine for body physics this time around, which is being applied to all combat in the game said by todd howard (the same engine that runs games like UFC, starwars force unleashed, soul cailber 4, WWE games, uncharted 2, and more) so there is a possibility that hand to hand could become hand to foot to you just got knocked the F$#@out lol DREAMING*

I want realistic hand to hand, but i was under the impression that hand to hand as a skill is removed in skyrim, and every character can punch people...its just not that effective. Good chance i'm wrong tho

How can you kill a dragon with a sword? let alone a mammoth. Mammoths and dragons don't even exist.

Seriously in a world of magic and deadric gods. I believe we can have stone crushing punches.

I've killed loads of Clannfear and Xivilai with hand to hand, mammoths should be easy ( albeit tedious ). Would love serious unarmed combat, but probably a case of file under wishful thinking. Just be sure not to forget us completely in the perks.

This. Is it so unbelievable to have martial artists so powerful that they can hold their own in the elder scrolls world? I mean, yeah, real life unarmed skill you would have a tough time taking on some hug beast, but this is a world filled with impossible things that can't happen in real life. ie. dragons, magic, etc. While I highly doubt that such unarmed martial arts system will be implemented in Skyrim I think many of us would agree it would be pretty cool and not at all beyond reason.

+100000

We need a better hand to hand system, or at the very least h2h weaponry. that would make me oh-so happy. And not hard to incorporate into the game at all; its just gauntlets with brass knuckles or a blade attached to it.

I'm all for a better h2h system. I'm afraid it's hard to do well in first-person though...

Then again, imagine the satisfaction of killing a dragon mid-flight with your hands :D

It would be nice to see fluid punches be implemented, with a smooth jab-cross combination being the fighter's staple. I could imagine the shield-bash being implemented as a parry. Finishes would be a nice edition as well. Aside from that, I'm not one for wanting much more.

As others have pointed out it is an unrealistic world. Heck in oblivion you could get so good at acrobatics you could jump off of water. So even the physical skills could be unrealistic, so why not let someone get so good at unarmed combat that their right hook of doom can take out a mammoth or dragon.

And what prevents him to flick you when you have armor and a weapon?

Real life martial artists can achieve way more destructive power than armed people (we are talking here about weapons like swords, axes and hammers) plus, this is a fantasy game.
While it should be realistic as much as possible, having a character bashing a head of a dragon with bare hands is perfectly normal for a fantasy game.
Also, there is also a guy named Marijan Matijevi? (1878-1951).
He is proclaimed to be a strongest man ever to live.
He was known for opening beer bottles with his fingers, ripping a steel chain as if it was made from paper, preventing airplane from taking off and pulling two merchant ships in New York harbor.
If feats like that are possible in real world, then I don't understand why shouldn't even greater feats be possible in fantasy world.

On topic:
Yes, I would like some sort of H2H improvement since I love martial arts.
Also, having unarmored skill back would be great also.
I personally wish to make totally unarmed and unarmored character who uses only his skills.
I also wrote somewhere on this thread some other ideas I have for martial artists and stuff.

well i trained bjj, kung-fu, and a little bit of muay thai as part of the valetudo training (i svck in those sports by the way xD) and well my conclusion is thisone: "monk or not, probably you will need more than just your fists to defeat some beasts like the dragons"

I think it would be pretty cool. Maybe it could be something along the lines of right clicking being a kick, and left being a punch.

It would also be neat if it worked with other weapons, like having a sword in your right hand and a kick assigned to right click.

So you ask Bethesda to turn monks of Tamriel to Tibet monks ?
It's too asian for me. Not that asian themes are bad,but the Shaolin monks are overused and both the movie and game industry are oversaturated with shaolins and ninjas.
