Martial Arts RPG

Post » Tue May 17, 2011 9:36 am

What comes next after Skyrim?

I'd like Bethesda to create a huge open world RPG based on martial combat. LIke Jade Empire only awesome. I know lots of the guys at Bethesda are into martial arts, so put all your skills to use and make a badass martial arts game!

Discuss.

With both the Elder Scrolls and the Fallout series I imagine Bethesda has their hands full. An open world RPG based on Eastern martial arts could probably do quite well but I doubt Bethesda would be in a position to make something like this.

However hopefully with the success of Bethesda's RPGs, Red Dead Redemption, and several others we'll see more studios giving large open world RPGs a shot :)

Monk class in Diablo 3 might be satisfying enough. Jade Empire is piece of crap for martial arts element. The only thing I found somewhat close to real martial arts is the Swordmaster class in Warhammer Online, and Warden class in Lord of the Rings Online.

Jade Empire was awesome...

And we all know Bethesda can't make a character model or decent animations to go with them, and you expect a martial arts RPG?

Nor could Bioware, but comparing them to Korean and Japanese companies might be unfair.

My point exactly. I think RPGs and martial arts are a perfect fit where the player could build and learn new moves and styles and there is a mystical aspect to it as well that could provide the framework for some cool "magical" effects/attacks. But nobody has really ventured to really pull off a great game like this. Given the success of Jade Empire for how mediocre of a game it was, there is clearly a market out there for this.

I'm optimistic that Beth will have some new IP beyond Fallout and TES in the next few years, especially given the licensing agreements with Obsidian and the dramatic increase in developers at Beth for Skyrim (100+ !!). In my mind, Beth is the only company that could really make a kick-ass martial RPG. With the apparant improvement and reimagining of combat in Skyrim, it seems the engine they've created might be able to provide for a more realistic martial arts experience (at least I imagine so).

In any case, one of my recurring dreams is that Beth will create a martial arts RPG of unparalled excellence. Making a game like this could also tide over the TES fans that want spears, throwing knives, and ninja stars and all that back in TES.

But I think martial arts doesn't go well with first person perspective. I'm skeptical with Skyrim's engine ability to incorporate the wu su in my concept. Perhaps 3rd person or isometic view action combo base like Demon Stone would be ideal. Hell gamesas bought ID soft, they are good at making 3D engines.

See http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bG0F7vvJX_8. It doesn't focus entirely on martial arts, but it includes them in abundance. I think it's going to be an MMO on PC and just an open world RPG with smaller multiplayer features on the PS3. I'm checking it out when it comes out.

I recall playing a free mmo called 9 dragons like 5 years ago that was about martial arts. You join different clans and what not. It takes place in china. The game was a total grind fest though.

NCsoft never let me down for being unoriginal, capable of turning great themes into another grindfeast stupidity. It is a company about superb graphics with rotten content. I'm not holding my breath for blade and soul.

9 Dragons was a Chinese game. It svcks and based off of mundane sword & sorcery system that never evolved since 2002.

...Damn, and I thought I was picky. To each their own, I guess. I love NCsoft.

Street Fighter rpg, a game that gets more frustrating, gameplay wise due to difficulty, the further your progress. Mix up online-offline components mabey, somehow.

Might be a cool little switch up for them, but highly doubtful we would see something like that. They already have two juggernaut series to work with.

I liked Jade Empire. It was one of the few games I played through completely more than twice. I wouldn't mind seeing a similar style game and come on, if Bethesda got one going and published it, it would be great.

Honestly, what's with these "Beth should do..." threads. :P Noone ever agrees with the OP, and yet they keep popping up. Are people expecting Devs to see this and then run off to Todd begging to make these games?

Yeah it would be nice if they came out with a game like this. Never understood why no one has jumped on it. I think it would crush imo.

The last martial arts game I played was Jade Empire, ever since, I wish for no more "martial arts" game to be made, until they know what is martial arts in the first place.

There is a http://www.palladiumbooks.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=525&Category_Code=N525 that was pretty good, but its a PnP game, not a cRPG. If Bethesda wants another setting, they should talk to http://www.palladiumbooks.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc.

They could probably do the http://www.palladiumbooks.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=800HC&Category_Code=R800 setting justice.

That's something I'd actually like to see them do.
(Or better yet Obsidian in partnership with Bethesda)

Aye, and I remember when TSR came out with http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oriental_Adventures. My group never played it, but I got my copy autographed by one of the playtesters. I got the impression that it never really took off (in fact the GenCon session I was going to play it in got cancelled). I liked the way one could create a new martial art, incorporated non-combat skills, had the honor thing, etc. The rules and setting didn't quite make it feel like AD&D though.

side note: That gametester turnedout to be a hardcoe PnP collector. He spent $325 in '85 for one of the fabled and banned B3 modules. Oh, and he also taught me some origami...so that cancelled session wasn't all bad LOL
