Mass Effect ripped off Mega Man

Post » Tue Jan 28, 2014 8:55 pm

I'm watching Chip-Cheezum's Lets Play of Mega Man Legends and have reached the end of the game... which... holy crap, this is just like Mass Effect.

Terrifying plot twist about how a race of sentient machines have been keeping organic life under a certain population limit for a very long time? Check. Final fight for a servant of these machines while a giant colossus descends upon your people? Check.

After realizing this, I began to notice all the other little things Mass Effect ripped off from this game.

Play a character that is essentially the captain of a ship? Check.

Collect ancient artifacts from ancient races? Check.

Ship to get around places? Check.

The similarities go on and on, and the worst part is that it's really hard to argue this is just a coincidence.

What do you guys think? If you don't know what I'm talking about, look up the final boss battles for both, Mass Effect 1 and Mega Man Legends to get an idea. Have you seen this occur in other series', and if so, do you think it was accidental, or some inspiration was taken from one thing and put into another?

Came out in 97? Looks ancient.

The endings kind of remind me of Fallout Tactics. Machines are trying to wipe you out. You reach the control center. Destroy them, or sacrifice your body to take control of them?

No offense to the fans of Fallout Tactics. I don't mean to insinuate that the endings to Tactics are in any ways bad.

These plot details weren't exactly original when Megaman Legends did them, you know. All of them are incredibly broad tropes. Seriously, a ship you use to get to places? Uh, hello? That's what a ship is supposed to do. And Final Fantasy was doing that for years before MML.

Also, Megaman's hardly the captain of the Flutter. That would be Barrel, who's really more of a mentor and legal guardian than anything. And even if he was, it's not exactly an impressive crew he's running, since it consists of a grand total of four people (Megaman, Roll, Barrel, and Data). This isn't starship captain material.

And I say this as someone who liked MML much more than ME.

I understand these are common tropes, but if you compare the way the final thirty minutes of each game plays out, it's TO SIMILAR.

You think these games are similar because in both of them you play a captain of a ship?

It's just a shame the world isn't ready for Mass Effect: Engine Room Maintenance...
