Mass Effect Style Dialogue Discussion

I cringed, but I'm withholding judgement until I get into the game and see how it plays.

I was afraid they were going to go this way, very disappointing indeed, but I guess I'll have to get used to it.

how do we know this? it seems like it could give the character more personality if they had 4 different responses per conversation, or more. Honestly i was pretty impressed by what saw, it gives it a more personal touch.

Now granted it could turn out horrible, but i don't have a problem with it just because they changed the presentation of it.

He was in first-person when he walked up to the robot and was forced into third-person when he responded with a dialogue choice.

That's forced third-person.

I was really happy with everything I saw EXCEPT that!

How are modders going to make story mods now that our PC has to speak?

It's too little to go on for me to be in full panic mode, and what I saw of everything else definitely impressed me. But story, role playing, and dialog seemed to have taken a step back. We'll see what happens.

I don't like it, going to be the first thing I turn off if possible. Honestly just seems like a huge amount of wasted effort and money that could have been allocated elsewhere. I don't think anyone wanted this, especially since it always comes with severely limiting dialogue choices.

How do you know what you're actually going to say if you're only given a few words to describe it ahead of time?

We're going to get this:
1. Yeah
2. No
3. Maybe
4. Bye

.. instead of this:
1. Yeah, I like that idea.
2. Yeah, I don't think I have a choice.
3. No, I hate that idea.
4. No, even though I think it's a good idea.
5. Maybe, I'll have to think about it for a while.
6. Maybe, what do you think?
7. Bye.
8. Bye, [censored].
9. Bye, friend.

Character development has been severely simplified. How is that a good thing in an RPG?

He stated that it was not forced third person in the reveal.

.. then why was he forced into third-person from first-person if that's the case?

The shortened dialogue presented as options was something I loved/love (still playing) in Witcher 3 and was actually hoping F4 would pick it up too. So I'm happy in that regard. Not floored about the amount of options though. It's though and not much has been revealed so I'll keep an open mind.

Shortened dialogue options means less control over what you say. Less control over what you say means less character development.

Less character development in an RPG is not a good thing. Copying other AAA games is also not a good thing. You shouldn't want Witcher 3 in the Fallout universe. You should want to completely different games so you actually have variety in what you play.

bit negative buddy :/

Id imagine that i'll be more like

1 polite response

2 snarky response

3 aggressive response

4 pull gun and start a fight

I'm going to give them the benefit of the doubt

they were constantly switching back and forth between 1st and 3rd through the whole demo to demonstrate that you could do every thing in either.

Pretty sure he just changed perspectives during the conversation. Bethesda loves to leave that option on the controller so it only makes sense that you can do it during dialogue now.

The only truly negative thing about Fallout 4. Voiced Protagonist is a big NO NO, you will always lose dialoge and lose Choice as well. Not to mention that you lose the ability for what you would say in your head, instead it's a sole Survivor talking. It's a lesser of two evils however I still consider it evil.

I'm still very happy about Fallout 4 but this is probably the only negative and it could potentially be a huge one.

Here's what im thinking: Todd did say that giving players the choice and freedom was at the top of their list. He also said dialogue can be experience in whatever camera angle you prefer. And its a lot easier to take something away than it would be to add something.

By saying up front that you can turn off your character's voice if you don't want to hear him talk would be like saying "we wasted all this money recording and writing dialogue." He's going to try to sell people up front on it. That's my guess at least.

When it comes to dialogue, never give Bethesda the benefit of the doubt. Ever.

So straight, clear-cut responses? In a world of gray? That's terrible. Try thinking of a situation in real life where you could only respond in four different ways. It doesn't work like that. You have more than four different emotions.

the person playing the game probably switch from 1st to 3rd to get a better view.

In addition, I think Todd said that an automatic switching of view is one of our options too. I'd have to replay the presentation to be sure.

EDIT: Nope, he didn't say it.

Personally I don't care. I just hope quest mods won't be oddly immersion breaking.

4 is for a typical conversation but you can see room for 8 (and 6 was shown at one point). My reasoning for correcting you is I really don't want everyone judging the dialogue system before the game comes out. Listen to me, you have no idea what it's going to look like until you get the game. Stop theorizing about how bad it's going to be, whats written in the dialogue is a lot more important than the interface.
