I didn't get the need to go completly FPS for the combat.Iget bored halfway through the game with the combat and just play Halo again because its heads and above better for that type of game.

The mineral gathering is a chore..better yet its badly implemented.I'd have more fun digging rocks out of the yard till my fingers were bloody.

The personal interaction is good, and has some depth, but going through the above two to get to that isn't worth it.

I actually put down MA2 and started playing Fallout 3 again because the latter game had better combat because both rely so heavily upon combat.

MA2 was a drag..Oh look i'm a milimeter off in my aim and i miss,my enemies never miss..Cutscenes before combat, lets put the player on the wrong side of cover after the CS.How is frienldy and enemy AI different from the first game? The enemy AI is still suicidal and clears out an entire area to rush you headon while friendly AI seems to consist of hiding behind crates until you have cleared out all enemies.

I can't bring myself to be mean to my own crew. I take the Mal Reynolds approach to captaining - nice to my friends, mean to my enemies, and not afraid to get the job done.

@JackSplat; I agree with the mining, using a save editor to give myself stupid amounts of resources has done wonders for reducing the rubbishness of that. I think the combat is much better than the first one, IMO it's a lot of fun.

I likes the combat because it felt more "real". In combat who wouldn't take cover and fire when the enemy is reloading. Its how it should be. My main problem is the lack of RPG. It feels to me like they made it to much like an action/adventure game than a RPG. I still love it and am glad I bought it and can't wait for the third I just think it could have been better.

Yep, that's how I treat my crew too. Can't bring myself to be mean to them- when I try, I invariably feel like I just kicked a puppy. Or something equally heinous.

For the title, shouldn't we rename the threads to "Mass Effect series discussion" or something? I mean, we got Mass Effect 1 and Mass Effect 3 will come out eventually.

Actually, it can be quite funny, in a dikeish kind of way.

Anyone know what causes crewmates to die when left to hold the line near the end of the suicide mission? As far as I can tell, it's just a random chance. Do the odds of someone dying increase when you bring specific characters with you to fight the reaper?

Basically, you need to leave ones that are better at a fight to hold the line, and take weaker ones with you for the last battle.

Spoiler
I took Jack and Legion with me, and everyone survived. The wiki said to make sure you leave Grunt and Garrus behind to make sure everyone makes it, if I remember correctly. Too lazy to look it up.

Ah, I see.

Spoiler
I was taking Garrus and Zaeed with me, and it kept resulting in casualties. When I went with Tali and Thane, no one died. Was curious as to whether it was coincidence or if it actually mattered who you took.

Spoiler
I'd say it depends on how many combat-centric people you leave to hold the line, like Garrus, Grunt, Zaeed, and I think Samara. In other words, you need meat shields to hold the line to make sure everyone survives. However, I have at times taken people like Garrus and Grunt, and everyone still survived. So I supplemented my own rule in that there should be at least 3 or 4 people with assault rifles to hold the line. Casualties prior make holding the line harder.

When he said that, I was really hoping we would be able to give the Normandy any name we wanted.

On my second playthrough I hoped so even harder. Naming the ship the "deferens" would have been just cruel enough of a joke for me to play on a certain quarian...

the way the mechanics works behind the scenes is each character has something like a "points" system assigned to them. Some give more points then others. you need a certain ammontof "points" to avoid casualties. Grunt, Garrus, and Zaeed contribute significant amount of points.

At that moment in the game, Shepard comes across in a very George Foreman-esque manner.

Am I the only one who thought that?

The amount of roleplaying in this game is exactly the same as in ME1. It seems people forget what RPG stands for, Roleplaying Game. Not fill out forms game. Numbers do not define an RPG, ME2 is no less of an RPG than ME1 is, it's just taking a different approach to skills and experience and so on.

I completely agree. Mass Effect was always intended to be experienced as a trilogy, and you can't really discuss one in depth without brining up the other, so discussing the series as a whole makes a lot more sense.

I went out to my closest comic book shop today, which is in Oslo so I don't go to often due to the train ride and the outrageous ticket prices, but anyway. I asked for the ME comics, but they didn't have them. They'd get them in when they're all collected as one book though, so I'm really looing forward to that. Ended up buying volume 1 and 2 of the KotoR comics :)

I'm not sure why anyone expected us to be able to name the ship, the Normandy meant a lot to Shepard and the entire crew, especially Joker, naming it anything else just wouldn't be right.

True, and since the ships name is used in a lot of dialogue it couldn't really be freely named for that reason either. Also why Shepard is only called by his/her last name :D

Commander Shepard of the SSV Qwib-Qwib?

They need to make a game mod that can put that on the side of the Normandy. That reveal scene in the beginning would be so EPIC! (lol)
