I have to agree with this. I actually think they will have slightly different roles in terms of gameplay depending on who we choose.
I missed them the first few times I watched it.
I look forward to your theory.
I have effectively ditched the son-turned-into-a-ghoul idea based on new evidence I have seen in the footage. Although the ghoul/disfigured pirate is clearly going to play an important role, I don't think that he is directly connected with our protagonist.
One thing I will say is that I don't think any of the skeletons above the vault are scientists...
I'm not certain, but the one on the left appears to be wearing a white (or at least pale) coat....its hard to tell really since unlike the Vault the scientist skeleton in the vault the clothing looks degraded. on a further viewing it may be a shirt and trousers and I think the far right skeleton might be wearing female clothes.....it would be interesting to see if we could match those to skeletons to the civilians on the shaft entrance.
The ghoul dressed up as a Redcoat, (not a pirate,) is probably our first glimpse at a companion besides the dog.
The game is being released on the Marine Corps birthday.
As a fomer Marine I am hoping it is at least possible to be the last by god Marine in the world.
For the lore conscious is there anything to suggest PA is an Army only thing prewar? Is it possible Marines got training in older (T 45) models?
Going on the premise that New England is a sports fanatic area the ghoul will be a New England Patriot.
Personally I think if the ghoul is a companion, and he's wearing a redcoat, we're going to find him somewhere to do with the American Revolution, like the Bunker Hill memorial, or somewhere similar.
I figured it out!
Codsworth is really the father. After the war robobaby runs off to start the Institute.
I know, genius.
When we arrive at the vault, there are 5 civilians already waiting. We see a man in a white shirt, a man in a red-checked shirt, a man in a light-brown waistcoat, a woman in a yellow blouse and flowered skirt, and a woman in a green dress. Two of the skeletons match up with the man in the white shirt and the woman in the green dress. The other skeleton will no doubt be one of the other three, which actually ties in perfectly with my expanded theory (to be posted when I've verified a few details). One observation to help confirm that they are all in fact civilians is their location. The trailer next to them, as seen in the shot of the spouse running up to the vault, is towards the back of the vault lift area. This suggests that they were thrown backwards off of the lift by the blast wave, and would likely have been seriously or even fatally injured as a result.
Greetings....
...If this turns out to be a 100% true, that we might have to find the his wife and his son, then that might be one heck of an incredible story plot. And perhaps we might encounter that they are not in Boston anymore but in another area, and they have been taken away by this guy that everybody knows and mention and you are trying to find out and that area might come into another dlc, that could work fine and very edgy feeling to see how much could this "family drama and suspense" could work as a whole in the twist and turns we might be taking.

He can't start the Institute... The Institute was already there as the MIT.
I would be inclined to believe the American Revolution theory, especially the idea of finding him at Bunker Hill Memorial. And I do actually think now that he is a companion and is not directly connected to the protagonist.
He coud be the one who put the jets on Old Ironsides to bring it home as spoils of war.
Looking at the pip boy in the E3 footage I noticed the following...
Compensated Pipe Revolver Rifle
Short Laser Musket
Which I assume means that the Vault was entered post war since these are post war manufacted weapons.
Also the pip boy also has the following......
Groundskeeper Log (groundskeeper in a vault?)
Technician's Personal log (suggests that the vault was manned rather than automated)
We are Done (suggests a last desperate, we are so screwed message from those manning the the vault)
Your New Assignment (suggests somebody is in a position to give the protagonist assignments, or that the protagonist takes this from someone who is sent to the vault)
Side note I noticed the icons on the hud.....one appears to be a rocket for the red rocket garage, I'm not sure what the rest are supposed to represent.
I'm thinking that is connected to the minutemen.
I saw a post of r/Fallout and it got me thinking: what it every person who went into Vault 111 died... inluding you? What if the "Sole Survivor" is actually a clone of the original mother or father who went into the Vault during the prologue?
Food for thought.
Though I'd prefer cryo-freezing or stasis.
Could have looted the weapons out of containers, since I'm assuming loot is randomly generated still... possible to find such weapons even in a vault no one entered in 200 years.
Could be but I dont remember it happening in Vault 101, so I'd assume Vault 111 isn't going to be that random in what you can loot.
Maybe....
perhaps maybe, if you watch again FO4 showcase, when the pipboy is being presented as a gaming device as well, there is a game called "RED MENACE" and it shows this well, red manace taking away a female to the top (like the Mario game) and the pipboy guy that you play it as, is trying to rescue the lady.

Perhaps that might be a "show and tell" of a maybe spoiler if you see it that way and think that maybe that is part of the plot with your family, if you play it as a male or female.
