Massive Clue to Fallout 4 Storyline!

Post » Fri Nov 27, 2015 1:58 pm

EDIT: many of the details in this post are due to be updated based on new information discovered in the E3 footage. I will either amend the post directly, or more likely will provide details in a new thread a little later on.

As many of you may know, I previously made a number of predictions regarding the pre and post-war elements of Fallout 4, several of which turned out to be surprisingly accurate. Now, based on what we have seen so far at E3, I believe I may have stumbled upon a big clue towards the storyline for the main quest. And it is HUGE! Please note, if this information turns out to be correct, then you may be reading what could end up being fairly big spoilers. Therefore please DO NOT READ if you do not wish to risk spoiling the surprise of the main storyline. For everyone else, here we go...

###

###

In the concept art we saw at E3, we see several groups of images with a larger image in the centre. Part way through, one of these larger images shows us what looks like a ghoul pirate. A few shots later, we are shown another much larger group of images, and then there are 43 further images shown in quick succession, the 43rd one being the pre-war shot that Todd talks about. It's the images in this section, two in particular, that I want you to focus on here. The images in question are the ones in the 37th and 39th shot:

37: We see our protagonist, accompanied by his dog, and he is firing a mounted milligun from the side of a vertibird.

39: Again, we see our protagonist with his dog. This time, however, he is accompanied by a soldier in BOS power armor and the ghoul pirate we saw in the earlier image. Note the damaged airship and other aircraft that signifies a large-scale battle.

Also, in the footage shown at the Microsoft conference, we enter the "Museum of Freedom" to assist a small resistance group, which according to the leaked casting documents are actually the Commonwealth Minutemen. (EDIT: Changed this reference from Railroad to Minutemen as per casting document)

But what does all of this have to do with the bigger picture? Here is what I think happens:

Spoiler
After searching for our family to see if they could have survived outside the vault, we eventually come across what is left of the Minutemen, led by Preston Garvey. He asks us to help them, and we discover that they are looking to take on the Institute who have been working with (possibly) the Enclave. We are also told that large numbers of people are being taken by force as part of the Institute's android programme. We then get to choose our allies from a number of different groups and factions, including the BOS, the Railroad, as well as the group led by the ghoul pirate we saw earlier. We then end up engaging in a full-scale war against the Institute and the Enclave.

If this turns out to be true, then the real twist in the story would be this:

Spoiler
During the early part of gameplay, when our protagonist finds Codsworth outside of the former family home in Sanctuary Hills, he says: "Codsworth? You're still here, so.. other people could still be alive too". This tells us that he does not know what happened to his family and is in fact looking for them. Which means that they did NOT make it into the vault. My theory is that the mother/spouse and the son gradually became ghouls after being locked outside of the vault, and that the mother later died when the son was older. In the years before she died, she told her son many stories about her father. But the one that sticks is how he left them both to die. Even if this is not true, the son believes it to be true. He then had to fend for himself, and later grouped together with other ghoul outcasts, and eventually became the notorious ghoul pirate. There is then a confrontation when he first realises who we are.

Edit: the ghoul pirate theory may end up being a red herring, although I do feel that he plays a very big part in the events of the main quest. If this is the case, there are still several other possibilities that involve the son and possibly even the mother being alive post-war.

As an interesting side-note, here is one more idea for you to consider:

Spoiler
When we compare the trailer to the gameplay footage, note the similarity to the clothing of the vault-tec employee, and that of the infamous "mysterious stranger" in Scollay Square...

37. That is my desktop background.

39. Looks to me as if the 'ghoul pirate' is actually one of the minutemen from the microsoft demo, he is using the laser musket that is their signature weapon as well.

http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Laser_musket

From the picture it looks as if BOS and the minutemen are the 'good guys'.

That and the footage of you signalling a Vertibird makes me think that your joining up with BOS again.

Wow, I never stopped to think that they would do these large scale battles in real-time.

I do admit I was surprised by how much you got right.

I thought the footage implied that the family made it into the vault but that you are the only survivor to make it out of it 200 years later. I could be wrong though.

Your child being a ghoul pirate sounds a bit weird and wacky. I suspect your child must play some part though, if they model it based on the two parents you design. And I feel like making him a ghoul would undermine that a bit.

What I'm wondering is what the Brotherhood of Steel is up to, cause there seemed to be footage of you fighting them, so it will be interesting to see what role they play in the story, or if that was just something for E3/unrelated to the main story.

There are a few pictures of that ghoul and it totally looks like he is wearing the outfit of a British Redcoat not one of a pirate.

Also in the E3 trailer we saw the protagonist casually hopping into a vertibird and controlling a minigun, don't know if the concept art means anything significant. I don't think looking for your family is going to tie into the story much if at all. My bet is that when you leave your cryotube or whatever you will be aware that no one else made it.

Im sure most of us would prefer not to have the BoS show up to play the good guys (worse good guys vs enclave bad guys), even so much as playing the good guys for the wrong reasons. Im still all for the idea that the brotherhood is there to come take the institutes tech. They really be put back to their old mission and set up as morally grey option just like new vegas did with its fractions. Most of us would love to see them come in with advanced weaponry and take that **** over. Not because they are saving androids or what have you but because "the technology of the old world must not fall into the hands of savages".

Besides the old enclave armor variants, we really do not see any enclave being presented in the trailer.

Totally didn't see that! The Kotaku document actually refers to the group as being the Commonwealth Minutemen, and not the Railroad. Although the Railroad could also be involved. OP has been edited to reflect this.

I just hope that this time the family member we get attached to, does not die mid-way because reasons.

It worked for me in Fallout 3, but I would be mighty ticked if it would be done a second time.

I remember seeing a quick glimpse of a Brotherhood character name in an enemy health bar in a scene where a vertibird was blowing up, so we might be able to choose sides?

Oh, not the Enclave again >_<

I really hope they stay dead.

I wouldn't mind fighting against the BoS (assuming it's not Lyons' Pride, they're okay in my books), or choosing between helping the BoS, The Institute, The Minutemen, or none of the above. Sort of like the NCR/Legion/House/Independent choice in New Vegas.

Considering that Enclave Power Armour isn't even listed as Enclave Power Armour, just X-01 Mk II, I don't know if the Enclave will be making an appearance... aside from where-ever the armour came from.

The possibility of being able to choose sides seems like a very viable one. Op updated.

Best case scenario in my eyes for signalling the BoS Vertibird would be to imagine it being the same as calling for NCR support in FNV; you don't have to side with them but there are badass perks to it if you do.

Given the massive amount of work put into Vertibirds I can imagine that, if we side against the Brotherhood, that they'll be someother way of utilising the feature.

You know Bethesda is hardly one for restricting major content in-games (Head of the Thieves, Assassins, Magicians and Fighters Guilds and all).

Maybe an independent playthrough (if there is one) will have your "faction" lift a few Vertibirds from the BoS and allows you to call them in as you please. Same could go with any other faction you join up with, too.

I [censored] hope so, that would be killer. The new Enclave will rise again... wonder if you can have slaves or androids in your settlements. Probably not but we can hope.

Most likely the brotherhood will be one of a few sides we can take,

"Freedom and Liberty!
Do whatever you want in a massive open world with hundreds of locations, characters, and quests. Join multiple factions vying for power or go it alone, the choices are all yours."

Taken from amazon and its also on gamestops website as well. So we can most likely assume they are just one (non white knights pls beth dont make me beg) faction that we can side with. The others being probably the institute and the railroad.

Well perhaps the outfit, which WONDERWOMBAT suggested may be that of a British Army Redcoat, is simply that. Just an outfit. This would be similar to Lucas Simms' outfit in F3. Even though Simms appointed himself as the town sherrif, people seemed to accept his position in large part due to his clothing, as a symbol of order and of leadership.
Now let's consider again the protagonist's son. In this theory, he would have spent 200 years as a ghoul wandering the wastelands after losing his mother. He is alone and bitter, and he has learned to take what he needs by force. He eventually meets others who are willing to follow him, and he earns a reputation for notoriety.
He then discovers the outfit and it becomes the symbol of all that he represents, and people fear him because of it.

One prediction that I made that I was especially proud of is that the game would begin Pre-War and move into Post-War via something to the effect of cryogenics.
