Massive Flooding in Queensland, Australia

Post » Mon Mar 14, 2011 5:13 pm

I'm unsure if this has yet made worldwide news. But Queensland (the Northeastern State of Australia) has been suffering severe floods recently. Today this has reached true crisis point, as http://www.news.com.au/breaking-news/floodrelief/flood-info-centre-updates-reports-warnings-advice-and-how-you-can-help/story-fn7ik2te-1225985436806 has resulted in 9 confirmed dead and 66 missing, Flooding on the Great Dividing Range has resulting in massive floods, carrying with it sand and mud, The town of Toowoomba was hit by a sudden and unexpected flash flood. A water wall traveled down the main street of the town, washing away the people doing their shopping in the street and the cars (including those in them at the time).

The Capital City of Queensland, Brisbane, is also being evacuated, and it is believed the water levels there would potentially rise 80 to 90 metres.

I believe there a few forum members here from Queensland and Brisbane in particular. Just wanted to let everyone know whats going on, so we can direct our prayers for the people suffering in what are potentially the worst floods Queensland has ever seen.

I was in the CBD today in Brisbane and the whole place was being shut down, every store is basically closing shop....was eerie. I fortunately don't live near where the flooding is happening (or expected to happen) but I know plenty of people in New Farm and City/Valley areas and they are all evacuating. The worst thing is that over the next 2 days it's expected to get worse.

Pretty crazy stuff...Closely watching Facebook Updates from a friend over there at the moment, she's in Brisbane, she hasn't evacuated yet though. She was meant to be flying home this week. If only she booked a week earlier.

I knew it was bad up there, but this really puts it in perspective for me. If they're evacuating Brisbane, this is beyond anything I've ever seen of heard of. Seriously, what natural disaster ever threatens a state capital? I've seen a whole damned state on fire and the cities are oblivious to the threat.

I'm totally flooded in, hopefully the rain eases up over the next few days. Water's just starting to leak into the house now.

I heard about your flooding problem, but I didn't know it had gotten that bad. Hope you guys pull through, but I'm pretty sure you will.

It's so sad, such a beautiful place. I hope they find the 66 missing ok and intact and that no more go missing.

Bethesda needs to sponsor a forum sandbag filling team and send us all over there! :slap:

Seriously, best wishes to the folks there. Australia has had its extremes of weather phenomenon and disasters the last few years.

They've closed one of the biggest food distribution centers here (Coles) due to violence and fighting breaking out over the remaining food, as apparently the big food storage center is flooded and most of the distribution channels are cut off. Hope that everybody has stocked up. According to a friend, there has been looting happening in the evacuated houses in Ipswich (a nearby city which is particular low and has been hit hard by the flooding). For the most part though people have been looking after each other.

Any zombie plans you had earlier would probably fit well into this scenario.

Australia donated 1 billion dollars to Indonesia after the Tsunami, millions of dollars to Haiti, and 1 million dollars to Queensland, just beacause it is a developed country doesn't mean it can't use a helping hand :(

EDIT: I'm not belittling what happened in Indonesia or Haiti, as the floods havn't caused nearly as much damae and suffering, i'm just saying

Wasn't there a forumer that lives in Brisbane? I hope he or she is okay, as I do with the others in QLD. I've been praying for those in the floods lately, and as we were returning to SA from Victoria, I noticed quite an amount of flooded farms and roads on our way back. Not as bad as the Queensland floods, but still pretty scary.

I think there is quite a few forum-goers who live there, myself included.

Water is receding now and didn't peak at the expected 5.5 metre level so that's a bit of good news. Now starts the monumental cleanup.

Thats good to know :) I've heard on news that thousands of helpers are cleaning eveything up. But, there seems to be flooding in New South Wales, Victoria and soon to be South Australia and Tasmania. Thats alot of flooding lately. It seems the hot(ter) states and territory will remain as ther are.
