MASSIVE framerate dropslowdown.

Post » Thu May 03, 2012 1:49 pm

I love Fallout, and normally I can forgive little bugs and whatnot, but this, this is TOO MUCH. While I'm playing, the game will randomly start slowing down, the frame rate dropping constantly, down to the point where it's literally like 1 frame per second. This of course renders the game completely unplayable. Moving, shooting, pausing the game, everything, slowed down to a crawl. It IS possible to pause the game, but you have to press start over and over and over again, until the game finally realizes you've been pressing it. Then it slowly fades into the start menu. If you try to save, it takes about 2 and a half minutes to fully save to 100%. And pressing the PS button to completely exit the game is the same way, have to press it over and over until it finally responds. Sometimes you can get lucky and quit out of the game that way. But most (99%) of the time, you have to completely restart the ps3.

I can't even make any progress in the game because of this. It happens about every 15-20 minutes. What makes it even more maddening, is that I just bought the Lonesome Road DLC today. Been looking forward and dying to play it ever since I first found out that they were making it. I was so happy when I bought it earlier today. Feels like a waste of $10 now though. This bug has been present on every DLC so far, and even flows over into the non DLC parts of the game. I roam around the Mojave for 20 minutes, then get the bug, rinse, repeat. I know this isn't just an isolated thing, I've read on other sites about people having this very same issue. Anyone have any fixes? Or are we all just out of luck til they decide to fix it?

The only fix I've found is restarting the system, but that's only VERY temporary. I fear I may have to put the game aside for a while until it's fixed, much to my own disappointment, especially having JUST bought the new DLC. Because it's simply unplayable it's current state.

This is also happening to me.

I can't progress at all in Lonesome Road longer than 2-5 minutes without the framerate dropping and the game eventually freezing.

And just like ObZen said, it's so slow that even to pause the game you have to hit the pause button over and over for it to respond. Which has been present before but restarting tended to work around it.

With Lonesome Road however, I'm forced to restart every 5 minutes.

This is really annoying and I'd like to make some progress in Lonesome Road, hopefully it can be fixed.

I agree, this lag really kills the game for me. I was going to keep this game for another year or two but the lag makes me just want to give up on the whole game and sell it towards skyrim.

Same issue. I was getting this before Lonesome Road, but normally only after an hour or more play. Not it happens a lot quicker.

I have found that you can save the game (assuming you can get the game to pause), exit the game and restart the game. A full system reboot doesn't seem to make much difference.

Now since Lonesome Road this has gotten worst. It now takes less than an hour for it to hit.

Basicly the frames per second turns into seconds per frame.

The way the game is behaving, it appears to be a memory leak.
Please patch this soon. This is an awesome game I would love to play it some more.

Same issue here, the more you play the more massive the framerate drop is. I find i can only play for maybe an hour before it becomes unplayable also when you fast travel and go anywhere that requires a loading screen it gos to crap fast. Also can someone please explain what a memory leak is thank you.

Sorry for the double post but I will also shelve the game till they fix it. i love FNV and have all the DLC even Lonesome Road which freezes every 2 min and makes it impossible to play having said that all the DLC need a patch cause there's problems with them too but LR is the worst. With all DLCs and the vanilla game installed the game runs like a drunken sailor that is to say not at all.

I http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1221387-patch-16-causes-random-massive-frame-rate-drops/ about this over a month ago. A patch has since dropped with zero fixes. I'm starting to doubt we'll see a fix for it.

Between FO:NV and Dead Island I've decided I'm done buying multiplats on the afterthought platform, it's 360 for me for any game that isn't PS3 exclusive or developed with PS3 as the lead platform. I feel bad for those of your that only have a PS3.

I don't blame Obsidian and other lazy devs exclusively, either. Sony itself absolutely needs to crack down on this BS. It gives their platform a terrible rep.

Great game, Obsidian, but your lack of support for the PS3 is infuriating.

I've been emailing support about this issue. They gave me the usual solution of clearing my cache, but I told them that that wasn't doing anything.

Here's how they responded:

Hello,

Please try your disc on a Friend or Family Member's PS3 and see if you get the same issues. If you do then your disc may need to be replaced. If you do not get the same issues then there may be an issue with your PS3.

Here's my response:

I think it's worth mentioning that several users on the Bethesda Forum section of Fallout: New Vegas are reporting the same issue.
http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1232125-massive-framerate-dropslowdown/

I don't mean to stubbornly refuse to admit that my PS3 or Disc is defective in any way, but after seeing that other players report the same problem.
I have doubts that ALL of us have defective systems or copies.

Yet, I'll go ahead and try the game on another PS3 and see what that results in. May be a while though.

I just read bethblog about GRA. And I'm quite frustrated. I don't want to have to miss out on such great guns and mods and stuff, but hell, I don't want to spend money uselessly to watch my game lag and freeze again.

Alright so here's what happened:

I bought a new copy and tried it out on my PS3:

It didn't work.

I tried the new copy on my Friend's PS3:

It didn't work.

I tired my old copy on my Friend's PS3:
It didn't work.

At this point I'm ready to rule out it's a PS3 or disc problem. I'll send the results to Bethesda support and see what they respond with.

UPDATE: I think, THINK, I may have found at least a temporary fix to this. Maybe I just got lucky but it's been working for me. It was enough to get me through the Lonesome Road DLC all in one shot. Go to http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1233996-possible-fix-for-the-game-lag-everyone-is-having/ and try what's written there. Hope it helps out.

Quick update for everyone, Bethesda responded.

Hello Allan,

We will escalate your case to the developers, however before we can do that we need some additional information.

What resolution are you running the game at?
What is the size of your hard drive?
How much available space is on your hard drive?
Are you using a Sony brand controller or is it from a different manufacturer? Do you have any of the controls remapped?
What is the level of your character when first playing Lonesome Road?

I've given them my info and hopefully they'll make the developers aware of this. I'd also recommend you all at least email Bethesda Support saying you all share the same issue, it can only help our case.

Also give ObZen88's fix a shot above. I'll get back to you all on that as well.

All the DLCs since Honest Hearts have been just brutal for performance issues for me. I started getting the framerate issue when searching containers in HH - same problem in OWB and LR. I've noticed that the framerate only drops for me when I'm out in the open in a large map (i.e. outside where fast travel is available). Every time I'd leave The Sink to go outside in OWB it would be totally unplayable. Lonesome Road has been sporadic but probably the worst yet overall - rather than being able to recover from a slowdown using the PS button technique, I find that LR is just freezing more often than not, forcing me to restart the system. It's taking an eternity to get through the DLC - been playing it in earnest since it was released and I just got past the part with Rawr. I'm probably resetting my system 10-12 times per sitting. One thing that's just started happening is the game freezes when I use weapon hotkeys on the d-pad - I've made a habit of it and now I have to go into the Pip-Boy to switch weapons to avoid the freezing (bringing up the Pip-Boy often causes the FPS slowdown, as well - particularly the "Data" tab).

This game was buggy from the start, but it was largely playable. I'd get freezes infrequently - not enough to bother me too much. After Dead Money, though - total [censored] show.

Here's a summary of a few of my problems so far since the release of Honest Hearts (at least one of these happens EVERY time I play)...

Searching containers = FPS lag
Pip-Boy menu (Data tab mostly) = FPS lag / freeze
Real-time combat with more than 1 or 2 opponents = FPS lag
V.A.T.S. = FPS lag / freeze
weapon hotkeys = freeze (since Lonesome Road)
being outside in a large map area = FPS lag / freeze
Sneak Sight doesn't work with Riot Helmet as it should (i.e. not at all anymore - it did yesterday)

There are probably a few more things that I can't think of at the moment.

I want to keep the petty insults to a minimum, but this game is a total trainwreck - non-functional and an affront to its loyal fan base.

I've been hooked on the Fallout series since the first game came out, but I cannot be loyal to a game if its design prohibits me from actually playing it.

Somebody with the tools to fix these problems - could you please get on this? With so many wonderful ways to break this fragile game, I'm starting to develop a New Vegas Neurosis.
