Master locks+ Random loot=Fail!

Post » Mon May 21, 2012 11:58 pm

I can pick any lock without even touching the lockpick skill tree but master locks give me trouble sometimes. As I fight my way through hordes of drauger and spiders,I notice a chest that appears to have a master lock on it. I break about 15 locks and I'm relieved after I get it open on my last lock pick. When I open it I find a minor healing potion and 11 gold  Then later I find another chest but I don't have any lock picks seeing how I thought running out would be worth it for the master chest. Random loot is perfectly fine if its done right but a novice lock should never have better treasure than a master chest. This happen to anyone else? :banghead:

Btw, I don't know how scaled loot works but I was level 15 when this happen.

I'm always angry when any locked chest has under 100 gold in it. But I get excited when I see someone left a pile of 13 gold pieces on a table.

Do you have the lockpick perk of treasure hunter unlocked?

Yeah pretty irritating.. Why the effort for little to no reward? Or for the same reward as adept etc.

Same here.. I'm lvl 29 on my main, and 25 on my thief character, and the random loot is terrible!
On my thief, I have only invested perk points in lockpicking and pickpocketing, but I'm not getting a lot better loot than on my main :/

I have at least 200 lockpicks with myself constantly... it's not that hard to gather them... and if you can waste 200 of them on a chest... well i can't say anything constructive then.

well I wouldn't say it should never happen
but the complete lack of correlation between the difficulty of a lock and it's contents can be really frustrating at times
had this master lock on a chest which was completely empty
actually thought that was kind of fun, like the bandits actively tricked me into using up my lock picks to protect their other stuff

Why should the best loot have the best locks? People value their possesions differently. Example: I live in a small flat in a bad street but I have two deadbolts a chain and a lock. If you broke in you would find a couple of guitars, a nice tv and a Ps3 and that's pretty much it that's worth cash value (A lot of my possesions are sentimental like books, personal writing etc.) now I know the need to have good security in a bad neighbourhood, but I really don't have much worth stealing so why secure it? Cause it means something to me.

This brings a bit of realism to the game. I don't want to know for sure that if I use a pick on a 'novice' chest that I won't find anything of value. It's nice to crack a novice and find a nice sword. It's equally disheartening to crack a master lock and find cloth and a carrot. But it's realistic and fits with the world.

That has nothing to do with what is being said here. I carry 125+ all the time. We are saying that loot is not relevant or randomized to fit the lock difficulty. Getting the same or better from a Adept as from a Master chest makes little sense.

It makes me think, "Man this guy really went all out to protect his studded armor and 29 septims.

Edit: Wait it has some relevancy, opps. Skyrim, Lockpicks, Locks, Chests, Loot.

I find it hilarious when you see a 'MASTER' locked door, only to break in and find a book pertaining to a quest you haven't started and a wardrobe with a hat. :whistling:

What effort? Broken lockpicks? There's no risk at all to opening a chest.

Do you have the lockpick perk of treasure hunter unlocked?

So I'm forced to put perks into a tree that I have no interest in? True it should be easier if I have lock picking perks but If I take my time and pick a lock without the perks the reward should be the same(especially since its much harder). After fighting dozens of enemies in a dungeon I find 11 gold in a master chest hardly worth it.

Edit: If realism has something to do with it then it fails at it.Yes some people do lock up minor things but if you can buy a master lock you obviously have enough money to have something valuable and would put that in the chest instead of crap.

Traps/Delving the Dungeon to find said chest. Sometimes there just happen to be enemies or rigged chests, but only sometimes (sarcasm if you missed it). Master Difficulty + Master Chest behind 20 mobs or more on the way, 20 septims and some potions. Totally worth it. That Dwemer wanted to protect that epic loot with the best chest money could buy.

I guess you never played D&D? The journey to the treasure is the "risk". And let us not get into this game has no challenge etc talk, that is another thread.

I've had it happen a couple of times but I never ran out of Lockpicks. I would always save beforehand if I was low in lockpicks.

As for the loot it's random, sometimes I've gotten incredible stuff like a Glass Enchanted helmet at level 26 and other times 100 gold or less and random items.

Yeah, I could save beforehand but I feel like thats exploiting the system. I like my game to have consequences, like if I pick pocket some one and fail either I'm running the hell out the city or fighting all of whiterun. Little things like that make the game more interesting instead of constantly reloading.

Skeleton key FTW

I'm almost done with the quest to get this item and it will definitively be less frustrating.

Doors or chests with master locks most of the time have absolute [censored]. There are too many examples to list but why in the [censored] world would there be better loot and more gold in a novice or chest that isn't locked than a master or expert level chest? Makes no [censored] sense. I spent the time and perks to unlock a master chest and find 11 [censored] gold? Also there have been so many times that I unlock a Master level door and find not a [censored] thing or again 8 gold and an iron sword. Un[censored]ingbelievable.

Here's a hint: Look up the definition of the word "random."

If you understand the word, then you'll understand.

Mind you, I'd rather there be loot that was correspondent in quality to the difficulty of the lock, but oh well. More reason to keep hunting, and that's the fun for me!
