Did he survive? I thought he was very old at the time of Morrowind.
Thanks for any info.
As far as I am aware, nothing is known about Neloth's age. Only that he was already quite old in Morrowind.
As far as Divayth Fyr is concerned... he was over 4000 years old during Morrowind's timeframe. He survived Red Mountains first eruption. I am sure the Red Year didn't even influence his research time table.
How old is Neloth you say? Well here is what we know:
Caius Cosades says that House Telvanni's "nobles are thousand-year-old wizards". (this is a part of a larger quote)
There is another quote that says: "The councilors themselves are ageless sorcerers living in the towers scattered over Vvardenfell. I know nothing about them, except that they are old, terrible, and evil". I can't find where this one is from though but it does exist in Morrowind's dialogue files.
Aryon's coded message to Fyr says (when translated): "Even Gothren and Neloth must admit that you are older and wiser and in every way superior to them in the arcane arts". So we can assume that Neloth is one of the older councilors.
Senise Thindo is held in low regard by Neloth, who sees her as "a mere child of two hundred years".
It's pretty safe to say that Aryon is the youngest of the Telvanni Councilors since he is frequently referred to as being "young" and Aryon tells us that Dratha is the oldest Councilor. Gothren is described (along with Dratha) as "barely living" by Fast Eddie and is also mentioned along with Neloth in Aryon's coded message to Divayth Fyr. So from this I draw the conclusion that Gothren is older than Neloth. So to sum it all up: Aryon is the youngest, followed by Therana, Neloth, Gothren and finally Dratha.
So, to sum it all up. Neloth is younger than Dratha who is younger than Divayth. Neloth is significantly older than Senise Thindo. So Neloth is younger than 4,000 but old enough to consider a 200-year old as being a child. So somewhere in that range. If you take Caius' quote literally and as true, then he is somewhere in the range of 1,000 and 4,000. Everything written above is in accordance to the TES III: Morrowind timeline which is over 200 years before Skyrim.
Now for my personal beliefs. I think 3,000 is certainly pushing it for a Telvanni, just because I always got the vibe that Fyr was significantly older than all the other Telvanni wizards. In my personal head-canon Dratha is c. 2,000 and Neloth is c. 1,600.
An excellent post. Most of these facts escaped me already. Thank you for summing it up for us.
If i recall correctly, I remember somewhere in game stating that Dratha was around 2000 years old and that she's the oldest councilor who is sustained by necromancy (i cant remember who says the number, but im pretty sure i remember it being around 2000, it MIGHT have said 3000 but im pretty sure it was 2000). Fyr is older though, around 4000 years old.
Neloth is around 1500 years, give or take a few hundred years by the events of morrowind, so add another 200 onto that for Dragonborn.
Though on a side note, it seems Neloth hasnt accomplished much in his lifetime. There's a random dialogue of him saying in Dragonborn that he has never been to the mainland of morrowind. How the hell, in 1600 years or so have you never been to the mainland of morrowind as a master of one of the great houses? I realize they are isolationists and all that, but Vvardenfell was only recently settled within 20 years in the events of Morrowind, so where the hell was Neloth before that (i guess he spent all of his time on the telvanni islands?).
All I'm saying, is a supposedly badass wizard that's always searching for knowledge would probably have done some investigating in the ancient lands of morrowind for artifacts and other such things. Or maybe he's just not that badass of a wizard, and is actually one of the lesser telvanni mages (which is why he's on the undesirable land of solthseim now maybe).
Whereas you have Divayth fyr who has been to every plane of oblivion, was a member of the psijic order and who knows where else he's been. At least he takes his wizard work seriously.
Also, i thought it would have been really cool if they added in a line of dialogue from Neloth if you talked to him while having the mehrune's razor equipped. That would have been badass.
