9 to 5 Master Shift? Other shifts are for "lower people&

Post » Mon Jan 27, 2014 7:44 pm

I've noticed among older people (25+ years old) a lot of disdain for those working something other than a 9 to 5 shift. Is this something that was ingrained into those raised in the 80s and 90s?

I don't mind working until midnight or later as often the case is. Someone needs to staff the ER, no matter the hour of the day. I've often been told that I need to find a job with a "normal shift", but don't have any kids or spouse to spend time with. And people in the same situation still frown down on my schedule.
I don't really care when you work, as long as you're comfortable with the time and can tolerate (or even enjoy) your job.

As a single person with no dependents, it doesn't matter when I work. Most people in the "system" with families tend to want something like 9-5, though.

The midnight shift does have health impacts. But beyond that, I actually prefer non 9-5 x 5 days a week schedules simply because any other schedule will help you avoid at least some of rush hour traffic.

Working until midnight, through midnight, or starting at midnight?

Working an 6-8 hour shift in and around midnight.

Here's just http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-25812422. It's been done time and time again and each time they find strong correlations between various negative health conditions and those working the night shift.

I prefer a 5-6 AM shift start to be honest.

There is nothing better than getting off work at seven in the morning, getting a six pack and some 7-11 chili dogs, and sitting on the hood of the car in the parking lot watching the morning commuters stagger in for their coffees. Apparently the sight of a beer and a chili dog under those circumstances can be somewhat unsettling.

I used to work night shifts, 11pm to 8am for years and at first I enjoyed it but it grew old after the first winter. The winter in which I never saw the sun. I have had other jobs with shift work as in every couple of weeks I work different hours and I hated that. Now I work 8am to 4pm and I enjoy it. I don't mind working more than 8 hours, I have had jobs in which I worked 12 hours or more depending on what job I was doing during the day. More hours, means more money.

When I was just entering the work force (after high school) I was the only one of my friends who went out and actually got a 40+ hour a week job. All my other friends got part time jobs at retail stores and such. Some are still doing that after all those years. I don't know how they do it. (I had jobs during highschool but I mean actually working to support myself)

My times vary, depending on what is going on that day but I have had a ton of night shifts (going into the night until about 10PM/11PM). Only nights I am there after midnight is New Years.

I worked night shift for two months at a Walmart before I moved. I absolutely hated it. For me it was like I was in a whole different world; going to work when everyone I knew was going to bed, and going to bed when everyone else was still working.

Having said that, I'm still looking for another job, and got a call a few hours ago from a Walmart local to my new home asking me to come in for an interview on Wednesday. If they offer me another overnight position, I'll probably take it. I can't afford to be picky.

They need flexible shift hours, i just dont know how people do part time work in multiple jobs, last person i knew who did that had a nervous break down, because they couldnt get enough sleep.

Working as a greens-keeper at a golf course this past summer had me working shifts 6AM to 2PM 5 times a week, and I absolutely loved it. The mornings were early yes but when you`re done by 2PM you have the entire afternoon and evening free, rather than working until 5 or later somewhere and having your evenings taken up.

So no, I don`t mind them. My step-dad works the midnight-8 shift at the railroad and he couldn`t imagine any other hours (probably because it`s so slack on that shift :P )
