Master Spells are so Laughable

Post » Fri Dec 16, 2011 5:29 pm

I just had to laugh out loud literally when Master level Firestorm, Which costs 650 Mana can't even kill a bear. Can't even almost kill a bear.

Try taking the reduced mana cost for master level destruction spells and both fire damage perks.

I find spellcasting to be weak, it takes forever for my two superior/permanent golems to kill anything. yet my warrior can walk around with a two handed weapon and one hit anything remotely close to his size, everything else takes two hits.

Don't waste the perks, just get Enchanting to 100 and hit 5/5 and Insightful Enchanter, make a 25-25-25-25 set for Destruction and you are good to go.

...Or take the 3 perks of your available 81 and wear armor with better enchantments.

Unfortunately, neither solution will make the master-level spells take any less long to cast :(

Even with the cost reduction, damage increase AND stagger perks, plus putting all points into magicka. I still end up out of magicka before killing anything bigger than a "normal" creature. I'm beginning to believe that destruction was built around the idea of gettting 100% magicka reduction.

This.

This is the only thing I can't stand about Master level spells of ANY school. They take [censored] forever to cast and REQUIRE both hands.

Only modders have been able to do anything for destruction magic and magic in general to make it better.

http://www.skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=2275 is a great mod for it if you are on PC btw.

Reduces master destruction spell time.

Balances destruction to scale dam with your skill. Makes it powerful yet not OP. Great mod.

Is also a WIP so it is covering all the spells. I believe it covered several other skills already.

Firestorm can't kill a bear.....hmm.....let me guess:
Could it be because it is a HUGE AOE that kills all low-mid level enemies and leaves higher level enemies with low life?

There is a concept behind aoe spells in most games that they deal lower damage than single-target spells because they can deal damage to many enemies at once.
And besides bears in Skyrim are higher level enemies and I assume that if you have firestorm that means you are high level so it was probably Snow Bear which is one of the toughest enemies in the game.

One thing that master level spells could get is lowered casting time but damage is good for situations they are supposed to be used in.

Yeah, not sure what they were thinking when they designed them. For some reason master = long cast, no dual casting benefit, and ridiculously high cost. I don't even bother taking the master perk for any schools. The only one I could see being worth it is alteration, but the alteration school's only appeal to me is in it's little utility spells like transmute, detect life, and candlelight, since the armor spells and dragonhide both svck.

I use the invisible + become ethereal shout + blizzard storm combo first go invisy run into large group of enemies then cast blizzard storm, shout and watch the glorious destruction around me with a grin.

Well destruction is pretty meh...you can get a way higher damage output letting it go lose with the expert spells, or just use conjuration.

The only good thing about Destruction is Impact. Take it and Dual Cast with cost reduction perks. Only way to live.

Just get the double enchantment perk, get master perks in 4 schools of magic, and then enchant your equipment to give you 50% reduction in those 4 schools of magic.

You can cast any spell from those 4 schools of magic absolutely free. And you can still enchant weapon damage on your gloves and boots.

End-game magic use is built around you having 100% magicka reduction, sorry to say. Also, you can make potions that boost your destruction damage.

Or instead of taking any perks to reduce mana cost just make an amulet / ring / helmet / armor with -25% mana cost and cast every destruction spell for free and save 3 - 4 perks and put them somewhere else.

Very true, but i would rather use my enchantments for a 50% deduction. I just feel like a dik spamming destruction herp derp a doo wadya gunna do??? backa pedal roo.

When you've figured out how to hose enemies down with reduced-mana cost Ice Storm / Fireball / Chain Lightning as needed, you've hit Destruction's sweet spot. You can go for the Expert price reduction perk if you want a little more single-target oomph, but there is absolutely no need to get the Master level perk or even pursue the master-level spells. They are, sadly, a freaking joke.

The destruction school needs a damage buff, and all the master level spells of all school need a cost reduction, increased time length and/or faster casting time.

Having to spend 4-5 seconds casting dragonhide to then have it run out 45 seconds later is a pointless endevour.

Alteration's armor spells should really just have an upkeep cost(a drain effect) of like ~20-50 magicka maybe. They're not particularly interesting or entertaining to re-cast. They'd have to implement a new mechanic for it, but it'd be pretty simple.

Or make it charge based: lasts 10-20 hits or whatever.

All Good Ideas! Guys.

This is my 3rd Char, My first char had no enchanting and was a master Illusionist/Dual weilder . Dual casting Illusion is pretty godly, you can Pacify almost anything and then get a sneak attack over and over. My problem is Master spells in Illusion are a joke, They only effect lvl 32, With dual casting Illusion Expert spells they effect 40+

On this 3rd char I just console commanded my Destruction to 100 to test it out. I used Fireball and Firebolt simultaneously with decent results, However I found Anything above Adept to be useless.

I have 140% mana regen, I have +28% reduction plus the perks and it is just laughable. At lvl 63 I can barely Cast Firestorm. When I did try it out it was just useless.

My second Char had Alteration mastered (no cheats whatsoever, manually leveled) Paralyze is by far the best spell. Water Breathing is handy, The extra armor is useless. I would Dual Cast Ebony Armor + stability and it lasted a while but really 120 armor barely stops any damage. I have 1300 armor on my char and stuff can still kill me.

I totally agree. I really hope someone releases a mod in which armor spells are toggled, with magicka regen penalties commensurate with their armor bonus. Recasting armor is a pain :(
