Material Focus for Spells Mod?

Hi,

I had an idea for a mod, and I wanted to see if it has been done before in any way.

Basically, in a much older game (Dungeons and Dragons) casting a spell can have a material cost - usually something small,

like a little gemstone or some dried bat guano. Stronger spells require more valuable items, and the nature of the item required tends

to fit the spell (for example, an encumberance-reducing spell could require some kind of rare bird feather, an ice damage spell could need

ice wraith teeth, etc.).

I think this kind of thing could be very useful for both adding flavour to Skyrim's miscellaneous objects, and introducing an always-active

gold sink that is actually always in-use for mage characters.

Has anything like this ever been attempted? I've tried to do some searching, but most of what I've found is off-topic.

If not, how hard would this be to implement?
