Materials in Skyrim

Post » Mon Dec 06, 2010 2:16 pm

I'm sorry if this have been done before, but I wonder which materials you would like to see in Skyrim. Personally I hope for Stalhrim, Nordic(or more spesificly: a nordic style in varius materials), Silver(as armor and not just weapons) in addition too the ones in OB and generally all that would fit in the lore.

I would like to see gold, for the creation of ridiculously expensive and eyecandy but mostly useless golden armor/weapons. Maybe you could just melt down septims into gold ingots. It would be a good money sink for very high level characters.

Bone also.

This would make for some ungodly heavy armor for it to be useful.

Yeah, that's why I said useless. Plus the fact that a gold sword would be useless against an iron sword. The idea would be to have an amazing looking and extremely expensive golden set of armor that has no purpose other than to show off.

Ah, but gold plated armor would look just as bad-ass and still be useful. :) And I missed the useless part, must be more tired than I thought. ;)

Yeah but... that's not pure haha. I would be happy with the ability to make gilded versions of any of the armor/weapons. Still I think a set of pure gold armor would be a cool addition to the high level character's collection of useless items gathered throughout their adventures. :trophy:

Isn't Mythril just aluminum? They did not know how to make [extract] aluminum easily until recently (late late 1800's?). At one time it was more valuable than platinum.

Still... It'd be neat.

Hmm... I always figured from reading Tolkien that it was a purely fictional metal with ideal properties (whatever those would be). The wiki article on it compares it to the properties of platinum, but says nothing about aluminum.

In the books, it certainly appears to be stronger than aluminum, but otherwise... light, strong, and brilliant silvery looking ~and presumably very hard to get any of it.

2 words...
Dragonscale Armour!

How awesome would it be if you could get scales off dragons and use it to make weapons and armour?

Yeah, I think no matter what we'd need Tolkien for confirmation, and he probably wouldn't tell anyway.

+1 for dragonscale. And here's an idea... human skin clothing. For those strange characters some people will make.

It would be awesome... They did that with Ankheg's in Baldur's Gate. You could haul their (very heavy) shell back to the smith and he'd make a suit from it for you.

More of the Dunmer Armor materials. Bonemold, Chitin, Netch Leather, ect. Since Morrowind was more or less destroyed, didn't most of the Dunmer flee to Skyrim?

Yes, but you still need the resources to create them. Unless they would just be really rare and only found in Dunmer houses or pawn shops.

I'd like to see the standard options like steel, glass, ebony, and such return, of course, and I'd also like to see some new types, one thing I'd like to see would be more than one type of leather armor, with some types not being completely worthless at high levels, I like mithril and glass and what-not, but it strikes me as odd that for stealthy characters, if you want good protection, those are your only options, I mean, I'd think that an assassin would want an alternative to a suit made out of shiny green glass plates. Maybe we could have leather gathered from certain rare creatures that's considerably stronger than normal leather, sort of like how Bloodmoon had snow wolf and snow bear armor, which was better than normal bear and wolf armors. Also, I'd like to see more types of culturally distinct armor, after all, we have orcish and elven, why can't we have some other types? I mean, since it's in Skyrim I'd expect a lot of the armor to be Nord designs, but not every type has to be, we can have some imported styles as well. Strictly speaking, that's not a material, but for gameplay purposes, it still works, besides, if that one book in Oblivion is to be believed, elven, dwarven and orcish are materials, I guess elven armor is made out of elves.

Also, for weapons, I'd like to see wooden bows, because it's a little odd to have all bows made out of metal, we can have different types of wood with different qualities just like the material progression in metal weapons, this way, there would be a point for wood cutting as you could presumably use the wood from it for making bows.

Guilded armor types, with different guilds. Guilded iron for instance.

Tartan, I think. Though that usually means wool, which is itchy; so I guess a sort of cotton or linen tartan.

While I thought the glass stuff looked cool, it doesn't make any sense. Why would you make armor and especially weapons with glass. If glass returns, I think it should be very weak and serve more of an ornamental purpose.

because eldar scrolls glass is a volcanic material that is flexible, light and strong. It's not like window glass. Also the morrowind style was a metal armor with peices of glass embedded into it, wich is the better one visualy in my opinion.
