Maximize the drawing distance?

Post » Thu Dec 03, 2015 10:36 am

Hello guys,

First off I wasn't sure where to post this so let me know if this is the wrong sub forum.

I recently picked the game back up after getting a new GPU (r9 290) in order to enjoy it with top graphics. I have everything maxed out in-game and with the driver settings but the drawing distance makes it hard for me to completely enjoy that as the trees are just getting their leaves as I get closer etc... I can see really far yes but nothing is textured... is there a way to improve this?

I remember having to modify .ini files to win a couple FPS, maybe I can improve the drawing distance doing that?

If you know of any other enhancement I can make please tell me.

Thanks.

How do you mean they are "just getting their leaves"? Do you mean the trees are bare until they get close? Or are they "popping in" at too close a distance?

You can fiddle with ugrids. You don't want to go too high as it can cause your game to crash.

I would recommend you backup your save games. Ugrids of 7 seems to be the most stable value. Read up on it.

You'll probably want to use this: http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/41592/?

There's also shadow and grass distance, actor sliders, object sliders, and other various distance tweaks.

I would recommend you use a frame rate counter of some kind. Either FRAPS or steam FPS counter maybe. Keep a close eye on performance as you tweak some of these settings.

Please stop recommending uGrids tampering. That has a bad habit of breaking things.

If you really want to expand draw distance, get http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/59721/? set up for you. Vast distant LOD improvement without the uGrids Russian Roulette.

Davy > They are bare ye, its pretty ugly esp when the other trees that are closer are more textured etc, it's a huge contrast in forest areas

Thanks for the link Jasper I'm checking that out. Not really interested in crashes but I'll check if its worth it in case the add ons aren't enough.

Thanks MadCat, downloading right now. :)

Ugrids is the only way of increasing actual draw distance. Not just playing with LOD stuff. He asked. THere are people with perfectly stable ugrid setups.

Correction: There are people with nonstandard uGrids setups that have yet to destabilize. And when it does, it's a big undertaking to undo the mess it makes.

The game engine simply is not meant to render so many exterior cells. Even going from 5 to 7 nearly doubles the number of cells it loads.

You should see that video first and decide later.

Yes it can cause stability issues never said it doesnt. No way of knowing how many people actually have stability problems. I know ppl who play fine with it. What dynlod mod does is different and yes i would agree with you that he might want to use it instead. You raise good points.

Alright guys thanks for the inputs. Gonna stick to the mods and leave ugrid untouched, the video explained how it worked very well. :)

edit: Maybe one more little question :D Downloaded DynDOLOD, Skyrim unnoficial patches (for vanilla + all 3 dlcs) and currently downloading the 2k HD texture pack. I currently have the official HD patch - do I have to disable it in order for that last one to work? Do you guys reccomend a particular order of installation? I thought of the 4 patches followed by the 2k pack and dyndolod last. Cheers :)

edit2: I decided to go with ENB realvision. Might be graphic demanding but it seems amazing! Going to follow the modder's install order :)
