Maximum Capacity

I wouldn't mind having a 4 person team.

I think being able to use their abilities will kill the replay value and is just generally cheap.

I would need near total control of my companions before I'd use them in any capacity.

If I need to escort someone somewhere I will do it as quickly as possible, and do a lot of saving in the process.

I think Bethesda's companions are useless in the extreme.

Fallout NV's system was pretty much ok, a few tweaks and you would have a perfectly workable system, no need to rip it up and start again.

I've never played dragon age, but maybe i played too much Baldur's Gate when i was a kid (and i mean the original PC baldur's gate)

but that doesn't make this a bad idea. Companions are in the game, so I think they should spend some time to make them better. It's for the people who want to be the Leader of a small band of heroes, instead of a lone wolf.

admittedly, I like being a lone wolf for my first guy, but the option to have a couple more USEFUL people on the team would be great

How many companions should be able to follow your Dovahkiin at one time?

2-3 well done companions who has unique characters and personalities, decent quest lines, have different skills, react on events, companions like
Companion Vilja
http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=28977
Ruined Tails Tale
http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=3027
or
Julan, Ashlander Companion 1.3
http://lovkullen.net/Emma/Kateri.htm

And support of not so complex done mercenaries from Fighter guild, ability use ranks in guilds to command certain guild members, or ability permanent summon in cost lowering maximum of Magicka some daedra servants, or creating an undead servants from corpses, such companions can be done in larger numbers and have simple abilities and functions

Should you be able to customize the script/strategy of each companion?
Yes, but a little more complicated (i.e. heal me if i go below 50% health , or Run away and hide if you go below 50% health)

Such scripted rules isn't hard to be done and as template they can work for most companions

Should you be able to utilize the companion's skills? (i.e. having your rouge pick a lock or having your mage cast waterwalking on the party)

Definitely yes since thats expand variability in game and player can concentrate on different ways of building own character.

Something I've always wanted to see is alternate-PC-type characters. One mod I made for Morrowind was in the style of Final Fantasy Tactics' soldier office. Basically a place where you could hire a companion of any race, gender, and specialization. They'd just be stock NPCs that the player controls, essentially.

Need guards for your home? Escorts? Meat-shields? Skill-jockies? Soldier Office!

Always loved putting 'em in uniform, too.

I would love that too. Unfortunately, I think it was Todd saying it in the early GI podcast, that they are going to have more compananions, and that they were sacrificing having companions with really deep/unique personalities. I was pretty saddened by the news, but it was a while ago. I wouldn't be surprised if they through in a few unique companions...
i like this idea:

Utilizing Ranks, Permanent Summons, and Necromancy to get companions, all three of those things need to be implemented in TES. good idea.

Able to have 3 companions and they'll use the spells i want them to use and do some helpful party maneuvers.. Like heal party..

And if you can't have 3 then make it 2...

I hated the idea of having 1 animal and one human in New Vegas...

The dog and the robot were useless... except the robot sometimes could kill something..

I want like 2 supermages alongside me.. The supermage part should be like skills you pick for your companion.. Like everytime he or she levels which is much faster then you level, you get to pick magicka, Stamina, and health... So pick them to just put up Magicka and make them a Cleric and constantly heal you and do destructive moves...

So the most amount of people that can battle a certain amount of other people? because although having 12 people on your team might not hurt the framerate when your fighting 5 enemies, when your fighting 15 enemies at once or something, there might be a problem.

I guess it'd depend on the parts of the game that have the most amount of NPCs on the screen at one time

Good thing NV wasn't made by BGS, but there is that screenshot that looks like "pets" are in Skyrim, I wonder if they'd count as a companion, or they'd just be some kind of mindless attack hound that orbits you are barks at things as you walk around.

1 companion. keep it simple, and no.
I'm just interested to have a pet as a companion. If there is no pet, I'd rather work alone.

I voted 2 cause why not. I think they should keep it simple though in terms of ordering your companion. I think the companion wheel in New Vegas is a good starting point because this is not going to be a "party based" RPG like Final Fantasy or Dragon Age. The gameplay should not focus on customizing your companions tactics and they should, for the most part, think for themselves. Again, simple commands like Follow, Wait, Attack at will, Attack only when I do, Stay back, Stay close, etc... would fit well.

I should say about half of the total, actually. That's what I meant. But I might be reconsidering...

It'd especially help if you want to play a very specialized player. Even if you want to be a healer, you might be able to get away with it... however boring being a healer might seem for some people (including me) it's just an example.

In Oblivion you could get a KoTN, a Mage apprentice, a DB assassin, a Battlehorn Man At Arms, an Atronach and an adoring fan following you. I never did it myself but theres nothing to stop you doing that. Has anybody here ever done this, has anybody goot everybody possible to follow him/her at once?

You could only have 2 followers at a time i believe. and they were pretty worthless. They always got lost... They got in the way... having 5 of them would be chaos

I think it would be fun to have an old style RPG party, with a mage and a healer, a ranger and a warrior.
In the very old days I used to play RPG games that sort of looked like the mini-map does these days,
and four little pictures of faces at the bottom wich was my party. I imagined how they looked and interacted, and how the world looked they traversed. These days, with amazing graphics, I think it would be fun to recreate that experience in the beautyful world of Skyrim.

As long as its all optional and I can still be a lone wanderer when I choose :)

This made me think... maybe the difficulty of the enemies should be scaled to the amount of companions you have. The more companions (up to 3 or 4 IMO), the more difficult the enemies, or in some situations a greater quantity of enemies.
