This is absolute crap. They have no way of knowing this happened that long ago, there'd be absolutely no proof at all to back this up. That whole article is nothing but sensationalist doomsday crap, the kind that I've seen a thousand times over the years with nothing ever coming of it.

Agreed. It's like those people who go on about the impending catyclsm that will occur in 2012.

Getting ice cores from the poles? Not to say that the article is right but it isn't far fetched that they know what the atmosphere was like millions of years ago.

Pitiful mon'keigh, and their tiny minds.

I also just learned something...a lot of those fires they have going on down there, while also burning up oil, are also being used to burn the excess methane that is escaping. Kinda interesting.

Now, if only we can harness this supposed methane bubble this article postulates.

Could be just me but, when this has happened at least twice without humans causing it, wouldn't it be more logical to think that BP actually prevented a large doomsday disaster by revealing the pressure prematurely?

Which would give us the option of killing ourselves slowly by keeping on using oil as an source of power as opposed to using greener sources of power which increases the chance of getting killed in some doomsday disaster because of the buildup of excess of oil/methane ect. erupting in one go.

In short, please tell me that I'm misinformed and completely incorrect..

Meh, I've seen so many end of the world theories now that they won't scare me unless irrefutable proof that the time has come is right before my eyes. It seems to me that people are so obsessed with the notion of the end of the world that they'll jump onto any possible scenario they can find and say that it's going to bring about the apocalypse, and when there's no actual basis for their theories they instead look to nonsense that has no basis in any sort of logic. Just look at 1012. You'd almost get the impression that people are looking forward to dying.

Besides, if what the article says is true and there's nothing modern technology can do to stop it, what's the point in worrying about it? At least some doomsday theories leave room for people to take action before it's too late.

...except the oldest ice core sample ever recovered dates as far back as 800'000 years ago, that's somewhat far from the 250 million years they claim they know facts from.

There are other indirect methods, such as oxygen isotopes. Can extrapolate the Milankovitch cycles backwards, too, and build global climate models based on landmass distribution. :grad:

Who comes up with all this stuff? How many times has the world ended in the past decade? Millenium bug, 6/6/06, various virus "outbreaks", LHC, various things I haven't even heard of, and now a giant bubble of doom? Next year we'll all be dead anyway, so if the bubble doesn't hurry up, it'll lose it's chance.

The only time I'll believe that the world is ending is when it's something awesome. Perhaps a zombie outbreak?
