BP may have doomed us all...

Post » Sat Mar 20, 2010 12:43 am

The article said 90%. I'm thinking living in Interior Alaska will leave me in that other 10%. I hope that Alaska, Siberia, Iceland and Greenland will be safe. Oh and Hawaii.
But not Texel?
Gee, thanks <_<

:P

so... we're looking at atmospheric ignition?
death by smelly bits?
aka asphyxiation?

off topic:
wow, I spelled that in one go :)

Well I guess it's time to reveal my master plan

When I joined this forum I first noticed a guy named Suffca

I knew eventually he'd get a fan club

So to destroy his fan club and all his followers I hatched this plan to destroy the world

So now it was a bubble that killed the dinosaurs, rather than a meteorite impact?

right. First a flood no wait! A metrorite! Nonono it was global cooling? Ohhhh it was a bubble, it all makes sense now!

People are always trying to find reasons why the world will end, and they are always wrong, this article is nothing but media fodder.

I've changed my mind... No need to worry until we hear it from an actual scientist with plenty of qualifications etc

The world will endure, don't worry.

As for you and me, well our time on this plane is short anyway....

Yeah, even afer a nuclear war, we would be dead, the earth would be fine... eventually.

Honestly, I've seen better apocalypse theories.

Yep honestly it could have atleast been something interesting and coll to see but nooooo instead I get to sufficate.

Oh great. I've always wanted to die during an apocalypse!

This without the sarcasm.

Better hurry up.

But really I would sure rather be here than living on the gulf right now regardless of if such thing happened or not. We can still find rocks coated with oil in Prince William Sound now long after the EXxon Valdez oil spill.

:( Really I know your an ice vixen but that was cold... Add Wales please...Or wherever I live when this happens.

Seriously...we just had the 2012 doom theory last year, isn't it a tiny bit early for another one?

According to the Wikipedia article, the increase in temperature would be roughly 6 degrees.

Yay, what an apocalypse...

:slap: 1 -1.5*C cooler average global temps produced the the Little Ice Age.

To put it another way. It took about 7*C warming to bring us out of the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Younger_Dryas. Now I'd like you to crank up the heat and claim that nothing will happen.

No, a group of scinetist recently decided that a meteor impact was the most likely cause of the dinosaurs extinction. The Bubble caused a different extinction.

And we humans, with all our civilization and culture and technology are just one cosmic mishap away from extinction too :)

I call bs on this.

Sure it could happen, but it all seems FAR too much like any other "end of the world" story which does nothing more than strike fear in the hearts of those who believe it. ;)

And if it happens? There's nothing any of us can do to stop it.

I hope this happens before 2012 just to piss the 2012 people off.

So BP were drilling for oil 55 million years ago?

I hope http://www.helium.com/items/1882339-doomsday-how-bp-gulf-disaster-may-have-triggered-a-world-killing-event isn't true...

Pretending that the cause of the P-Tr extinction is agreed upon by any significant number of experts?

Credibility lost.

wft are you on about?

Dino extinction 65 mill years ago, due to ginormous meteor impact.

Permian extinction still up for grabs, methane is a possible cause, along with the Siberian Traps.

Thank you, that bit of "you fail meteorology forever" was kind of grating.

Well, that article certainly is unsettling. :cold:

Thankfully, the only place I can find this info is on this site and some no-name blog. There's some stuff from mainstream sites about the possibility of acid-rain resulting from higher methane levels, but no mass extinction events.

I'll start to really worry once I see it on AP, NBC, or BBC or something.

I'm getting really tired of doom sayers. Anyway, The oil spill isn't going to cause any apocalypse, that's extremely unlikely. I'm no expert, but that theory is probably ridiculous. But specifically the giant methane bubbles is interesting. If it's happened before then I wonder when it's going to happen again.

Oh yeah?

Bring it on!

I dunno about all you mainland europeans, but here in Sweden, an ice age only means one thing: Boomtime for Skistar!

I'm quite frankly fed up with all the mild winters we've had, I say make the ice age happen already!

There was also a theory that the oil would end messing up the Gulf Stream and cause a new ice age. Today i would welcome it, it's [censored] hot here.
