I just have one thing to point out that I've never really seen anybody around here glance at. It really seems like kind of a hard thing to overlook, too. Has anyone ever thought to consider that Morrowind came out almost a decade ago, and that you in turn were ten years younger when you first played Morrowind?

I mean, unless you were already an advlt when Morrowind came out (which I know a lot of you on this board were), how can you be completely sure that your perspective on video games hasn't changed as you matured? I'm 19 years old right now, when I first played Morrowind I was 12. A game like Morrowind seems like it would be a lot more overwhelming and amazing to a 12 year old me then the 19 year old me.

Honestly, I am content with Skyrim. Sure Bethesda could have done a better job with it if they tried or put more money into it, but I am having a great time with the game. I haven't talked to any 12 year old kids playing Skyrim, so I can't speak for them. How can you be sure that a 12 year old playing Skyrim isn't having as much fun playing it as you were playing RPG's when you were that age?

Just my two cents. If this point of view seems ignorant, far fetched, or otherwise not right, I can take the flame and criticism. I just thought you guys might like to consider this.

Frankly, Morrowind was not meant for kids. A lot people thought MW was boring. I wonder if age was a factor.

Neither is Skyrim, if you want to get technical. It's got a 17-18+ rating.

I was an advlt when I played Morrowind and when I played Oblivion (obviously). I still think both are superior to Skyrim.

Why am I not playing Skyrim right now? Why am I here instead of indulging myself in this game the way I did Morrowind or Oblivion?

Maybe Skyrim will take some time to grow on me but maybe it's just that it's not pulling me in like the other two games did. Time will tell but if I still feel this way about Skyrim in 6 months, I'll assume that it is never going to grow on me.

My two cents. I still own Morrowind, and I went back and played it 6 months ago. No it was not as awesome as it was when I was 17, but that was primarily because I already knew so much that I was never discovering new things.

Now Morrowind when I first played it VS Skyrim when I first played it. I don't know, haven't played Skyrim long enough. I can tell you one thing. I do not see myself getting near as much play time out of Skyrim as I did Morrowind. I also miss things like levitate, recall, building my OWN military outpost as opposed to buying some dinky house. There is also no where as much to do.

Now there are things I like more about Skyrim. 1. the graphics... duh. Dual wielding weapons and spells. And playing a pure mage. Wait... what everyone complains about. YES, did anyone try playing a pure mage in Morrowind? If you think spells costing to much for their damage and slow magic regen are bad try playing with spells that are priced even worse and you have 0 magic regen. Sure to play with destruction in Skyrim you need some enchantments to lower the cost at least some. In Morrowind you had to go 100% towards enchant and create enchanted items that casted spells instead of your own spells if you wanted to play a proper mage.

Both have pros and cons. Right now I like Skyrim more, because it is new and I get to discover new things. But I think total play time, Skyrim is not going to touch 1/10 of what I got out of Morrowind.

I'll probably be crucified for saying this on the Bethesda forums, but the last two games have been set in provinces that are blatant caricatures of real world cultures. (Romans for Oblivion, Vikings for Skyrim.) Daggerfall was a hodgepodge of fantasy tropes. (I never played Arena, so I can't comment on that one.) Morrowind was the only Elder Scrolls game that actually developed on its own creatively.

I agree that Skyrim is the best Elder Scrolls game, but that's mostly on the mechanics. Dragon Shouts are brilliant and completely unique, and smithing is awesome. But the culture and story are weaker than Morrowind, and Alduin is nowhere near as good a villain as Dagoth Ur.

morrowind was the first 3d elder scrolls so people think its better even if its not.
personally i think skyrim is the best so far, but many things from oblivion i miss, like arena and helpful guards, and bigger cities. but for the most part skyrim is a huge improvement in all areas of gameplay.
skyrim has the issue of, even though i havent nearly completed it yet i cant wait to see what happens next. if THIS is 360 what will next gen hold in store?

First off, completely disregard the above statement... as it is horse [censored]. and you should know that everything was better when you were a kid. the cartoons were better, the food was better. the video games were better. its called nostalgic value. There are people who have made careers talking about past entertainment, like the angry Nintendo nerd, or the nostalgia critic. we revel in our past, and change frightens us. skyrim is not better. its just new. but its just as entertaining.

I was in my early 20's when I played Morrowind, it's still my favorite game of all time.

I hated Oblivion though, swore I would never buy another Bethesda game after that.

Bought Skyrim...

The odd thing is I love Skyrim. I'd put it in my top 10 games. But I still like/liked Morrowind better.

I've played Morrowind off and on since release. And you know what? I have about 50 mods for Morrowind. And two huge expansions. And tons of community support.

Skyrim JUST CAME OUT PEOPLE. It has what, four mods?

Sheesh. Give it time, the world will be fleshed out both by the modding community and by expansions. Just watch.

Dead on! This is what I tell lots of peeps on the Nexus forums when I start reading some of their Morrowind posts. 10++ years younger or older makes a drastic change on anyones outlook good or bad regardless of what "subject" you are debating on.

Lol. They(who are they?) will flame you for saying this or they'll just pretend they didn't see it.

Actually I think it's true though. Younger(I mean below 17) audiences are usually more easily to be contended.
When I talked to the younger club members back when I was in high school I found that they can be amazed by the games that I think is just mediocre.
While the higher form students who have played more usually have a higher standard for games.

I'm going to have say, isn't "better" a subjective term to begin with and one which is relatively undefined. I'd say the bigger question is what is more enjoyable, I can not say I've played Marrowind to comment on that however. One thing is that games do get better overtime but this means that you need to do more to stand-out from the crowd and the way I see it Skyrim has done a little more to try and fit into the crowd rather then above it, just to try and target a larger target audience. Instead I'll compare better against Oblivion

Does Skyrim have better graphics then Oblivion? Yes
Does Skyrim have better quests then Oblivion? No
Does Skyrim have a better storyline then Oblivion? Not really, Oblivion had some filler but the storyline had more substance to it.
Does Skyrim have a better leveling system then Oblivion? Heck yes, could still be better of course
Does Skyrim have better features then Oblivion? Not really, it's about equal, Skyrim has dropped some very notable features from oblivion and but has added other very notable features (I.E. Custom Spells and Perks)
etc/etc/etc.

So as it goes, I really need to know what you mean by the word "better"? I do still believe Oblivion is more enjoyable then Skyrim is on that issue, Skyrim is still a good game but I can't see myself putting in the game play on Skyrim that I did on Oblivion as while Skyrim has lots of lovely things on the side, the main body of it is some what lacking.

@lorca

Not true, you're just comparing some of the Smarter kids from back then against the dumb kids from now which too many people do. Evidence suggests children are getting smarter (by the equivalent of about 0.5 points on an IQ test every 10 years), the IQ tests have to be rebalanced every so-often to reflect this as 100 is suppose to be the average. The biggest issue is a lot of Exams haven't really got all that much harder in the past 30 or so years and +1.5 IQ is actually fairly significant.

A lot of people take the nostalgia factor into account, OP. I've heard a lot of people respond to people saying that Morrowind is better by telling them that they're looking through rose-colored glasses.

The fact of the matter is that some of the people saying that Morrowind is better are still playing Morrowind, so they have the ability to make a fairer comparison.

Nevertheless, it all comes down to personal opinion. Myself, I prefer Skyrim.

Probably not. Different tastes for different folks.

There are plenty of advlts that would find both Morrowind and Skyrim boring. There are plenty of kids that would. But there numbers from both groups that wouldn't - or would find one boring but not the other (and you just need to read the posts here to see that). Even as a kid I didn't much like them.

Nostalgia is a different to that though...

To be honest I find the Pokemon games boring as hell (more so as I got older and each new edition was pratically the old one with better graphics and different pokemon) and don't know how people (young and old) put 200 hours into one (and they are some of the simplest RPGs out there).

I agree with the OP. I remember a couple years ago when I was in middleschool. We went to an assembly at the highschool where teachers would talk about it and the transition from middleschool. Nearly all of them spoke about how great it was. Nearly all of them were middle to late-aged and had to have had atleast 25 years of teaching experience. "These will be the best four years of your life." They said. [censored]. If anything, Highschool is and will continue to be the 4 most stressfull years of my life(I'm 16). Thing is, it's been a very long time since those teachers were in highschool, they've probably repressed all the bad memories they've had. Fact: You will almost always interperet the past different from the future.

there are a million factors that influence how much you enjoy a game, only one of them being the game itself. age, like you mentioned, can definitely play a part. expectations and hype can too. even things like your general mood and relationships and diet and how much sleep you normally get can affect how much you like a game. so the success of a game cannot solely be attributed to its creator, the player "plays" a major role.

I say this with a lot of reserve. I think Morrowind had more wonder and magic in it. Skyrim is slowly creeping up there though......but that also is said with reserve.

Which one do I enjoy more.....Skyrim.

So do you think nostalgia plays a major role in people liking Morrowind more? It's come to my attention that people may be looking at Morrowind through rose-colored glasses. At least that's what I've heard.
