May be quitting the mod scene

Post » Tue Sep 14, 2010 9:49 pm

I've tried every suggestion for stability and compatibility for this game and the GECK that I could glean from the tech forums, the GECK forum, the mods forum, Bethesdas website, Bethesdas telephone support, numerous GOOGLE searches and six billion other methods of seeking a solution.

Fallout 3 has become utterly unstable, even with no mods, no mod manager, and no script extender, to the point I cannot play for even 15 minutes reliably. Furthermore, the GECK itself has now become so unstable as to be virtually useless to me.

Because of this, it has become impossible for me to work on mods for the game efficiently, much less do compatibility testing between my mods and other peoples.

Therefore, I am taking at least a break, but most likely, I will probably be removing Path of the Gunslinger, et al from the Nexus and turning it over in total to Esrafael, if he wants to try to continue on.

Thusly, I am willing to stay on the team in an advisory and storyline writing capacity, but it appears that I can no longer edit. Since this disability extends to OBLIVION as well, I will cease several projects I had in the works for that game as well.

So, this is a last gasp plea for help: If anyone can figure out a way to fix this situation, will you please do so? Nobody? didn't think so.

Therefore, this is at least temporarily goodbye, at least for a few days or weeks...but quite possibly forever.

Below is what I've tried (from memory).

-I've blown several hundred dollars changing equipment in my machine to more 'recommended' devices that supposedly were more 'compatible over the past six months. -I've low level formated my drives and installed 'the most stable, dynamic operating system ever!' Windows 7, 64 bit. -Ive turned off UAC. -I've installed the game to a different hard drive and folder instead of the default. -I've rolled drivers for every device on my system back, then forward, everything but sideways. If some forum poster mentioned having good luck with it...I tried it. -I've installed numerous Codec packs, then deleted them when it turned out they were causing MORE problems. -I've set every .exe and every shortcut to run in admin mode. -I've tried Compatibility modes for Vista, Xp SP 3, XP SP 2. -I've tried running the game with no mods. -I've tried lowering graphics settings. -I've tried running the unofficial patch. -I've defragged til I'm surprised theres a surface left on my second HDD. -I've doubled my system memory (during a time when 2 gigs was 60+ bucks) -I've spoken ON THE PHONE with 'tech support' from Bethesda and sent them dxdiag information as well as a system info (per their request), along with this list of things I've tried....no response after numerous days. -I've tried installing the game, deinstalling the game, reinstalling the game, installing it to a different location and copying it to my desired one. -I've examined my registry from top to bottom. -I've run ccleaner -I've run every single anti spy and anti malware program out there. -I've checked for viruses with five different programs. -I've tried the game without Darnified UI, without FOMM, without FOSE, without every thing I could think of. -I've tried lower desktop resolution -I've tried lower game resolution -I've tried playing in a window, playing in letterbox. -I've tried everything but sacrificing a chicken.

This may be a little extreme for your tastes, but have you tried completely reformatting your hard drive and just installing the operating system, essential programs and Fallout/GECK?

I think the chicken is getting off too easily...

Seriously... are you otherwise happy with your comps performance with other programs. Do other demanding games work alright? Maybe Memtest will reveal some memory problems.

Might be worth noting that Fallout has the best compatibility with XP. Though a downgrade from Win7 would svck.

Would running the game in compatibility mode for windows xp, help him, or would that not be the same thing?

Technically no, its not the same. Its a "Compatibility mode" not XP itself. Fallout was made on XP, thus it would idealy work best on that operating system. Im not saying running XP will make the game work, but its just a thought.

Plus he said he tried running in compatibility mode already.

As shown in the list, I've tried reformat and reinstall, and have restricted myself to only the GECK and the game, and some mods I can't bear to delete. To no avail.

As to memtest, haven't tried it, but it appears I need to download one of those versions and burn it to a DvD? Can't do that til next month, but I see no reason for there to be an issue with my memory, all other tests regarding memory have shown to be clear, and the memory is both new and has been carefully treated and comes from a reliable local computer store.

I sincerely doubt its a memory issue, as I just recently purchased this memory and it has stood up to all other tests I've been able to run without issue. Furthermore, I cannot afford to keep popping out cash for parts based on the whims of programs whose credentials I cannot validate.

I am still waiting to hear back from Bethesda, but I doubt they will bother to reply in any kind of timely fashion, and even if they do, considering the bull they have been throwing at people lately I doubt they will have anything remotely useful to tell me.

The only option left to me at the present moment is to downgrade my system from Windows 7 to XP, and the only version of XP I have lying around is XP home, which is about useless.

Bethesda's official stance is that they cannot and will not support or recommend using this game or any other game of theirs on Windows 7, which is a little bizarre, considering that Windows XP is slated to NO LONGER BE SUPPORTED IN ANY FASHION WHATSOEVER by Microsoft, leaving the community with little to no choice but to upgrade to Windows 7.

I'm sorry folks, but I'm just at my wits end and I see no other recourse but to simply cease work altogether, if for no other reason than my [censored] sanity.

ive had bad memory before and it doesnt matter where you buy it from. they all get it from the same companies its just going to happen sooner or later that you end up getting bad parts no matter what if you deal with computers alot. hell i had a ASUS mobo with a faulty memory slot, at first i thought it was my memeory sticks but turned out to be the mobo itself. it never occurred to me till i tested the mobo cause ive used asus on most of my twenty something builds and i never had problems with asus before. guess i was overdo. :) also memeory is tricky, if its only a few bad sectors your computer will run fine until you run a program that uses up so much ram that eventually something gets written on the bad sectors and BAM insta crash.

if you are positive its not a memory issue then im willing to bet its a PSU issue. video cards up their power requirements in stages depending on what they are doing and some games use more gpu than others. its possible that fallout and oblivion (being the buggy, inefficient engines they are) are using enough gpu juice that your PSU cant handle it cause it faulty or something, but your other programs are under that power requirement threshold.

also you mentioned low level reformatting, do you mean you just reintalled the OS overwriting the partition or did you do a complete drive wipe? i ask because if its a particularly nasty virus (although im still thinking PSU) then you might have to do a complete wipe and reinstall.

i use windows 7 and all i have to do is run in admin mode and it runs great.

the only other thing i can think of is that windows 7 has that thingy (cant rememember what its called but i turned it off) where its constantly updating an index on the harddrive so that your searches are quicker. its recommended that you turn it of since it causes a lot of unnecessary disk reading and writing.

What is your hardware? Maybe that thing (if there is anything) you didn't upgrade (yet) is what needs upgrading? PSU? Heatsink? etc...

I may be waay off here, but it seems to me (after having spent some time in the Pc Issues forum) that people with problems always seem to have onboard sound or other odd peripherals (such as wireless keyboards, etc...).

You should post a dxdiag (even if you think it won't help) - someone may just happen to notice something.

Like, someone else asked - other than FO3/Geck how does your computer perform in general and in other games?

I had a similar problem a while ago. Tried almost everything (Reformating,Drivers,Reinstalling the game, etc) and none of them worked.
Until i found that the only constant i had was installing always the latest patch ( i think it was 1.6 at that time). Reinstalled the game and did just the 1.0.0.15 update and...no more crashes or freezes.
Of course i'm not saying this is going to work for you, but its worth trying. ( i saw you didnt mentioned anything about what patch you're using ).

are you crashing to desktop or getting a blue screen ?

Could you post your power supply specs ?

I think running the memtest when you can as others have suggested is a good idea.

It really sounds like some sort of hardware problem.

Have downloaded any programs to measure the heat of your system components ? Its possible you have a significant amount of dust
buildup on one or more components that is causing overheating and crashes ? This can be fixed with a can of compressed air.

Im crashing to desktop.

As to specs on the power supply, dunno what you want, really...its a 550 watt power supply, has two cables for SATA, and 1 rail for video cards.

I run speedfan and its reporting everything within normal limits.

My system was freshly blown out yesterday, and there was almost nothing in there to blow out.

I can't run that memory thing because I dont have any blank DVDs to burn it to, and apparently it must run on bootup, and Im flat broke right now so I cant buy any DVDs.

I think the 'hardware' problem is between the [censored] ears of the Bethesda and Zenimax programming department

Also try uninstalling your headset audio drivers if you havent already.

Do you have speakers ? or do you play using the headset headphones ?

Try uninstalling the headset completly if you can.

All your other system components look fairly standard, its just the headset thats a little unusual.

I completely disabled the audio driver and uninstalled it earlier today as I'm using USB headset instead of the onboard sound. I did this because I read that apparently Bethesda/Zenimax can't manage to handle Realtek sound.

The result? nothing...no change. Still randomly crashing (rarely) while walking around, crashing (fairly often) on quicksaves and even on 'hard' menu based saves, and crashing constantly in combat.

I was going to steal the 9500 card from my kid's machine and try it out, but the 9500 isn't supported, and I can't swap my card into his machine because his power supply doesn't have a rail for a high end video card.

I MIGHT just say the hell with it and start testing HIS computer out for stability (hes on XP home, SP3). If his turns out to be more stable, I might have to bite the [censored] bullet and start playing, modding and testing on HIS machine...Christ help me. He's nine years old, so I'll have to find a way to safeguard my modding installation from his/my playing installation.

I don't hold much hope that his will be much more stable, however, as the two systems are very similar.

At any rate, if anyone finds anything in the DXDIAG, lemme know.

Something you may want to try. I had good sucess with the 185.85 nvidia drivers. These drivers were released specifically for fallout 3 and other games
that came out at the same time period. other drivers crashed the game alot for. me. Its a bit of a clutch at straws but might be worth a try.

I think trying the game on windows xp on your son's computer is a good idea. If it works you could try having windows xp on seperate partition for the computer
you use. That way you still have windows 7 but have xp just for fallout. If fallout with xp doesnt work on your computer then id go back to looking
for hardware causes.

Also have a hunt around in the fallout ini and using the tweakguide ini guide.

Id be trying.

- disabling the games audio from within the ini.
- increasing the cell buffers and the ipreload cache. (these both helped me in minimising crashes) For detail on that here - http://www.tweakguides.com/Fallout3_10.html

there is a memtest that runs while your computer is on. you have to clean boot to make sure as much of your ram is freed up as possible for testing. ive been using it for years for quick checks, ill see if i can find the link to it.

edit: good news, i found something even better. i skipped vista so i wasnt aware but apparentely vista and 7 have a built in memory diagnostic. just type memory in the startup box and it will say memory windows memory diagnostic. then just restart and it runs. im assuming that its similar to mem86. it only took me a couple of minutes.

Thanks, Johnson!
I ran the memory test and it came back fine. Guess I'll have to just wait for Bethesda to message me back with their line of bull.

Meanwhile Im testing my sons machine (Im on it now) for compatibility, while my big mean machine is sitting there turned off. Go figure.

I think, I may know what your issue could be. Dispite how odd this sounds, it may be the fact you have up to date video drivers. I have 8.16 and everything runs great. Whence trouble shooting a game a few days ago the company suggested I update my drivers. Upon update to 8.17 and restarting my computer, the [censored] pretty much hit the fan. Few things ran properly and alot of my games CTD'd a crapload. Try to get a slightly older version of the video drivers if you can. Though I'm not sure where you would get that. I really hope this helps, as I too hate seeing another FO3 modder leave. We are a dying bread. :violin:

Er, that is a problem. I needed to clean up my C: drive, and moving the folder cause it to not work, I had to re-install.

I'm sorry to hear that, but I understand fully. Not being able to play is utterly frustrating. Drains any notion of fun right out of it.

From your list, it would seem that you have tried pretty much everything. The only, final straw I can come up with, is this: When you formated your harddisk and installed Windows, did you use the OEM version that likely came with your machine, or did you use a regular Windows disc? I ask because OEMs have been known to add all sorts of bloatware to their machines, causing a lot of trouble.

Best of luck.

Sorry about your troubles. I wonder if maybe you have done too much rather than not enough.

I am currently using an off the shelf 2008 Gateway laptop with 4G ram and Vista Home Premium that was bundled with it. I experience only an occasional freeze which (when I can get a diagnosis) usually seems to be related to the NVidia graphics card. I've updated drivers but that is about it. I use the latest GECK version and it never gives me any trouble. I'm using official patch 1.7, but no fake patch, no unofficial patches, no FOSE. I run Fallout 3 outside the programs folder but have taken no extraordinary measures to keep FO3 running. I also limit the number of mods installed to the one that I am currently working on.

It is a spartan approach but it works for me.
