Ok. Maybe I'm doing searches wrong, but

Post » Thu Jul 22, 2010 3:42 am

I just did a search using RELz for Find words, checked Search titles only, selected Oblivion Mods for the forum and got this:

No results found for 'RELz'.

This always happens, no matter what I enter for find words.

Is there something I need to do to get the damn search function to work properly?

It's just the lousy format of the search engine.
Try (RELz) and you'll get dozens of hits.

Yup! I have to chuckle at the people who say "did you search?" or "learn to use the search function" for replies on posts with questions. It's almost a guarantee you'll get nothing for your search or 500 hits that make your eyes bleed. Either way, it's not terribly useful.

It's probably easier to make a google search, restricting it to the www.gamesas.com domain.

Aren't searchbots banned from the gamesas forums?

Yeah it's pretty bad. Hopefully, they'll revert to the previous search tool we had, which was way more efficient.

Yes, after testing it it seems they are. The only link that came up when searching for "Relz" was Arthmoor's Feldscar Village thread.

But Search Titles only doesn't work at all, right? Or does it have to be exact? Just tried a partial search with (RELz) Imperial and got nothing using search titles only... Beth or ZeniMax or whoever, would you please fix this!

What do you mean by search titles?

You mean like the name of the mod?

I find that what makes searching so annoying is the constant dross of extraneous threads that people post about a mod, often only one small portion of the mod is discussed and often it is just a conflict. Those drown out the searches for the real relz threads - well that and posting load orders, but the load order post rarely has the mod name in title so those are easier to weed through.

Often when searching for a mod relz thread - especially an older mod - I start at the last few pages of the search results and work my way forward.

Have been playing a lot of warband and Tale Worlds has a neato forum - each major mod can register to have its very own forum where the modders can manage their own forum - more work, but there are advantages - imagine Wrye Bash having its own forum - a thread for bash patches, a thread for new feature requests, a thread for tags, etc.

It is the constant creation of needless threads that I see as a cause for why the searches here bite.

I think InvisionBoard's search function just bites period. It doesn't seem to know what to do with a "titles only" search and I've *NEVER* been able to get it to give a result on anything.

Google has far better results, but even it has a lot of junk if you go out far enough.

Yeah but Google can't get into the Beth forums... :sigh:

@Psymon: Search Titles Only is a useless option that's available when you use advanced search. I know what the mod is called and I know that it's prefixed by [RELz] - would be real nice if I could search titles only to find the official thread...

How do you figure Google can't get in? It's got all kinds of results. You have to click the "repeat the search with the omitted results included" link to see them all though.

Duh! Only one result shows when searching for Relz, but there are 1,110 hidden ones.
So definitely use Google for searching the forums!

Oh, is that what the secret is? There ya go, learned something new. I've never had one single hit from Google, let alone hidden ones, so I didn't think it worked. Have to look at my search criteria...

How do I get that option?

Go to Advanced search.
Type in search word(s), like for example Relz.
Fille in "Search within a site or domain:" field with "www.gamesas.com"
That will give one (1) result and "In order to show you the most relevant results, we have omitted some entries very similar to the 1 already displayed.
If you like, you can repeat the search with the omitted results included."
Click on the link.

I don't know what the issue is, but this doesn't work for me. I just did a couple of tests that should have produced multiple results and in one case I got nothing found at all and in the second only one result found with no message about only displaying relevant results. I find that even with regular searches (not advanced narrowing the domain to the forums), on the rare occasions a Google search finds something in the forums, clicking on the link usually results in an error message from the forums saying they couldn't determine which page I as trying to view.

Seems like Google doesn't index everything, only (some?) thread titles and some Profile.
Searching for "Arthmoor" yielded two hits: his Arthmoor's Villages thread and his profile
Searching for "andalaybay" yielded noting.
Searching for "Psymon" yielded noting.
Searching for "PetrusOctavianus" yields one hit to a page named "PetrusOctavianus' Textures Downloads" which leads to page two of Psymon's thread named "BAIN Mod Installation Projects" in which I've posted.
Searching for "Faregyl" yields no hits whatsoever.

Weird...but searching for Relz and/or the name of the mod should work in most cases.
