MDK 3

I'm a huge fan of the original MDK - not so much of MDK 2 (the post DarkLegacy made a little further down this board, btw, perfectly reflected my thoughts and feelings about those games). MDK 1 was far ahead of it's time - graphic wise, gameplay wise, and it had an amazing sense of action, pacing, suspension, and just downright epicness and immersion - a cool main character, a cool premise (altho a story that was a bit lacking. this could be improved on in the third game). Nothing beat the feeling as exciting music beat in the background, firing your gun at a guy that was jumping around shooting at you while simultaneously taking flying high-speed leaps from platform to platform avoiding the swinging pendulum in a perfectly paced dance of death. These seem like all the ingredients for an amazing next-gen (ps3, xbox 360, pc) title. If marketed well, I could see it becoming a huge hit. A guy with a slick-looking black suit diving out of space while dodging missiles and lasers and landing on a giant alien minecrawler, then sneaking in metal-gear style and taking out the aliens with a combination of stealth sniping and intense action? That could make an amazing trailer (and ultimately, game) for ps3, xbox 360, pc that people who don't even know what MDK is would be immediately interested in. Even if it would mean having another developer take on the title (due to lack of resources, money, time etc. on gamesas's part - kinda like they did with fallout 3. and look at how well that turned out - an amazing next gen fallout title was made. hint: this is what i want to see happen with MDK) - I think it would totally be worth it. Now that said, this always runs the risk of the game being put in the hands of someone who doesn't quite capture the magic of the original like gamesas could, but I think if a developer with a proven track record were to take up the mantel it would be entirely possible (like valve, kojima productions, insomniac, bungie, and infinity ward). And the money gained from making a move like that could go to expanding and developing gamesas as a company, as well as creating new and better titles of their other franchises (i'm also a huge fan of descent). I kind of get the feeling that gamesas is a company with a lot of excellent IP's with great potential, but not enough resources (size, employees, branches etc.), money, and time to fulfill that potential and pursue those IPs. I think selling MDK to another developer could potentially increase gamesas's resources and thus it's potential and ability to pursue it's development goals, while simultaneously creating an excellent next-gen sequel to MDK. Now obviously, if gamesas chooses to keep the MDK IP I'm perfectly happy, just as long as they make MDK 3. :P

On to my thoughts on the game itself - part of what I think would be necessary in order for MDK 3 to be a quality game would be for the whole comedic approach of MDK 2 to be entirely dropped, instead returning to the darker and more epic atmosphere of MDK 1. In fact, possibly even dropping a large part of the comedic tones that MDK 1 had - I just don't see large-headed hilariously ugly alien bosses, or a talking dog who's leading the old alien race quite fitting in with the atmosphere I'm imagining being set by a badass-looking guy in a black suit dropping out of the sky onto an alien minecrawler in HD graphics (hint: it wouldn't be a bad idea for the dog to be killed by whatever villain takes up the mantel of the alien invasion in the 3rd game). Comedic tones and moments could still be installed, similar to the way that MGS4 did it - but that was still an overall mature game experience. I think that's the approach MDK 3 could and should take. I would also like to see an emotional aspect put into the game on a level that we haven't seen in the previous ones - perhaps the 3rd game starts out with the reinitiation of the alien attack on earth destroying a city in which one of kurt's loved ones lives. Kurt enters deep mourning, almost oblivious to the reports showing up on the screens in the space station of cities being attacked and the world's military powers unable to stop the onslaught - but then he has a moment where he looks at the suit, alone in the space station, and realizes that what his loved one would've wanted is for him to do what was right for humanity - since he knows he's the only person in a position to stop them. He could also meet new characters along the way in the game as he dives down to earth and begins his adventure of trying to save the planet, new motives could arise, and it could take new twists that the other ones haven't explored. Atmospheric stealth / sniping missions could be included, as well as fast-paced & intelligent boss fights - I can imagine myself fighting a flying alien ship in the sky, leaping from ship to ship as I take shots at the impending boss, then throwing a well-timed grenade into it's tractor beam, allowing me to leap from one ship to the other and grab on to the boss's cockpit, grabbing on to the exhaust vent and while following on-screen timed button prompts (a-la god of war) to avoid attacks and rip open the vent, shoving my gun inside and blowing the pilots green brains out with my auto-gun, then leaping off as the ship explodes and taking a screaming dive from the sky down to the minecrawler that lurks below, as the game transitions to the next level. I am engaged in a classic MDK-style dive-through the sky while avoiding missiles and laser sequence, and then as I land I grab on to and hang from a black spire sticking out of the minecrawler, and snipe out alien guards preventing me from entering the mine crawler. I then leap from the spire and glide in to the entrance. As I round the next corner, I am treated to a cutscene where I surprisingly encounter another human on the minecrawler - someone who can potentially help me, but someone with mysterious motives...

In short, I see MDK 3 having the potential to be an amazing next gen title, on par with the other AAA titles that we've seen released for the next-gen systems - and I'd love to see that potential fulfilled, however that may go about happening. Hopefully we'll see this happen, even if it takes awhile. We've already waited for this many years, we can wait a few more ;)
