1. God. 2. Family.

God, Family, Love

Even though I think family and love are the same thing. I agree with this guy.

There is no greater meaning, nor inherent meaning, nor purpose.

Biologically, our purpose is to create more of ourselves - to procreate. We are, however, sentient creatures, not driven purely by instincts, so the meaning of life is what you make of it. To live life, so to speak.
Depressing? Not at all. You have no obligations, you cannot fail so long as you don't regret it. Time you enjoyed wasting was not a waste at all.

'God' is cop out - even if you believe in such things, it doesn't actually answer the question at all.

Time has always existed.

Not quite, there was no time before universe (according to current theory, the Big Bang created the time/space continuum), there will be no time after the universe dies. The universe is just a brief flash of existence in timeless non-existence. Like life.

So, it's meaning doesn't metter, just make most of the existence you have. Without making other people's existence unpleasant.

No need for the G-word with that philosophy :)

I could tell you how God is not a cop out, and actually does answer the question perfectly, but It would turn into a religious argument way too quickly which isn't allowed on the forums.

You may have misunderstood, what I mean is that just saying "God" is so vague an answer that it may as well not be an answer at all. It could mean one of a million things, or nothing at all. I'm not saying people don't find meaning in religion - I may not believe in it, but where people find comfort and fact don't collide in many areas - just that "God" in this context has so many meanings it may as well have none at all.

I have come to ask myself this question quite a lot in the past few weeks, and my answer to this question is, "there is no meaning to life", and this has sent me into MANY spirals of depression.

Back to topic, what is the meaning of life to you?

There is meaning to life and it is greater than anything that you could possibly imagine. The thing is that in today's modern, materialistic society, it is easy to feel alienated and without purpose. I'm not talking about religions as the answer; these are all misleading and man made.
Check out these guys on youtube and listen to what they have to say. Alan Watts. Terence Mckenna. Also, check out the spirit molecule documentaries. Once you realise the truth of the universe you will be content.

No time = No movement. (As far as we understand it. We cannot accept another logic.)

My point is that nobody knows anything. We can only speculate.
I'm not trying to say life is pointless. The fact that we do not know, makes life exciting.

I don't walk around trying to define my life and the purpose behind it -- I used to when I was religious because defining arbitrary things actually meant something, but like Santa, I grew out of it. I just live it, have fun. No point in making life even more confusing than it already is.

Is there a point to thinking about it? I think you should just live :)

Even if we were given a definition of the meaning of life, our minds would most likely not be able to comprehend it. Thus everybody's heads would most likely simultaneously combust. :shocking:

The current scientific theories are not fact, therefore, they have not been proven yet.

Now, I could deeper than just "God," but doing so would get me banned from the forums, so I keep it simple. I believe that MY life's purpose is God, and I won't get into any more detail.

Are you saying that just based on the fact that they are called scientific theories? Even if we prove them with 99% certainty, they will still be theories.

"A common misconception is that scientific theories are rudimentary ideas that will eventually graduate into scientific laws when enough data and evidence has been accumulated. A theory does not change into a scientific law with the accumulation of new or better evidence. A theory will always remain a theory, a law will always remain a law.[9]"

I said nothing about scientific theory (Though if we're on the subject, "scientific theory" and "regular theory" are two very different words), but in any case, while "God" may be a definition for you, that's a very personal thing. I'm not you, so I haven't the foggiest what you mean. Unless your definition of "God" is "Systematically killing nonbelievers", I don't think a little elaboration is banworthy - it is the subject of the topic, after all.

People approach "the meaning of life" too often with foregone conclusions. You kind of pick an answer, and then try to explain it so that the answer is true. This is what happens when you start with "there is no meaning" and this is what happens when you star with "the meaning is particular to my religion" in not so many words.

Instead I like to ask this: Why should life have a meaning in the first place? What about life makes you think it needs to have a meaning? In effect it's like asking you what is best in life.

And we ALL know the answer to that question.

What is best in life? To crush your enemies, see them driven before you... and to hear the lamentation of their women! Therefore if what is best in life is the reason for what is the meaning of life, then the meaning of life must surely also be to crush your enemies, see them driven before you... and to hear the lamentation of their women!

Words of wisdom from Djenghiz, Conan and Steampunk.

The meaning of life to me is that you find your own arena(way) of life. That you use your instincts to find what you're about. Whether it's pride, mental toughness or whatever. Also to constantly try to make yourself a good person, if not great. As if to constantly trying to make yourself a legend. All this of course according to your own world. Of course good friends too. Family too I guess. It's about mattering, getting respect.

I simply want to be remembered. Call me vain, but if everything I do is forgotten when I'm gone, it's pointless. Remember me for the good I've done, for the lives I've influenced.

The meaning of life?

It ends!

*STAB*

In all seriousness, I think that there are two key components. 1. To enjoy it while it lasts, because life is indeed not for forever, and 2. To leave it better for the next generation, because though your life ends life itself goes on.
