Media that changes the protagonist halfway through?

Post » Mon Nov 16, 2015 7:18 am

Hey! I know it's a weird request and most likely spoiler filled. I'm looking for any sort of media (book, movie, video game, etc) that switches the protagonist halfway through.

I guess I'm disappointed because most publishers tend to split this into a new entry or series. For example, Dragon Ball (anime) was supposed to be about Goku, while Dragon Ball Z was supposed to be about Gohan. One of the names they even kicked around for DBZ was Dragon Ball: Gohans Adventure. While the manga changed the protagonist, the anime changed it into two separate series. The Gameboy Advance games Golden Sun did the same thing as well. The novel Brave New World switches protagonist halfway through.

Anyway, I'm looking for any sort of series like this. Wether its split into two parts or not. What would you guy recommend?

The PS1 game https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SaGa_Frontier_2 comes to my mind. The game feature two separate storylines spanning across three generations.

The game have no connections to the first SaGa Frontier (also for the PS1), except it was developed by the same people. They are in different game universes with different plots and all that.

Metal Gear Solid 2. One of the most infamous examples in gaming. The game tricks you into thinking Solid Snake's the main character. He’s playable in the Tanker Chapter, his face is pasted on the cover and title screen, the intro features him extensively, and the pre-release hype wouldn't stop gushing about him. Yet once you reach the Plant chapter, you spend the rest of the game playing as Raiden. This was supposed to be a big twist, but everyone knows about it nowadays.

Persona 3: FES. You play as a silent protagonist for the main game (called “The Question”), but then switch over to Aegis in “The Answer” expansion.

A non game example would be the anime film, Puella Magi Madoka Magica: Rebellion. It starts off with the eponymous Madoka appearing to be the protagonist, but switches over to another character, Homura, and remains with her for the remainder. Which didn't really trick anyone who'd seen the series that preceded it, since it also tricked you into thinking Madoka was the main character when it was really about Homura.

And of course, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fSKbdqsd-Ac pokes holes into the whole concept of the protagonist in fiction.

thats the one that came to my mind as well.. after Bob was banished to the net, Enzo took over Bobs role as main protagonist and acting Guardian protecting Mainframe for a season. after that, Enzo and AndrAIa were sent across the net themselves after losing a game against the User and we got a season of them trying get back to mainframe. but they came across Bob again in the process and Bob took back his role as main protagonist and Enzo sort of returned to being his sidekick..

ohh, I suppose Fate/Extra for the PSP and Vita did it because:

Spoiler
you start the game as this guy at his school (think Persona) whos part of the Newspaper club, you spend a couple days (about a week?) going around meeting all the key characters, looking into the strange events and rumors.. last day of the week however, while following one of your classmates you are brutally murdered and left to bleed out.. at which point the game says "okay, now we will give you your character creation menu"

Extra wasn't the greatest game, felt sort of like a watered down Persona, and I was hoping alot more from a JRPG based off of the FATE franchise.. but, it wasn't a terrible game by any means either, the true Identities of some of the Servants i did not see coming.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0054215/. That was one of the most clever things about it: Janet Leigh's face was used prominently in the posters and the trailers, so everyone assumed the film would be about her, and it was ... for about the first 30 minutes.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0117571/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1 was credited with revitalising Drew Barrymore's career - which is astounding, considering the brevity of her performance. That's not really "halfway", though.
http://www.rockstargames.com/maxpayne2/ allows you to play as Mona Sax for a couple of levels.

In terms of switching perspective for an extended duration, http://gillian-flynn.com/gone-girl/ is a striking example. The first half of the book is written from the perspective of Nick; the second half written by Amy.

The Song of Ice and Fire has each chapter written from the perspective of a different character.
Stephen King's Dark Tower saga has chapters written from the perspectives of the main characters - sometimes Roland, sometimes Jake, etc.

The X-Files episode Bad Blood alternates between the perspectives of Mulder and Scully ("That's not what happened!" "Oh yeah? Then YOU tell it!") and gives us some "unreliable narrator" fun - with Scully's version depicting Luke Wilson's sheriff as handsome and heroic; jealous Mulder seeing him as a buck-toothed yokel.

That was from the fifth season. One of the funnier episodes too.

Anyway, back on topic, I supposed another example the OP's looking for is Death Note, though it's a special and very spoilerific case.

Spoiler
The villain protagonist, Light Yagami, remains constant throughout. However, the hero antagonist, L, only remains so for the first half before two other people take his place.

huh.. why do i not remember that episode..

anyways, I thought of another example for the OPs question, the Guild games (Europa 1400: The Guild, and The Guild 2). basically a sandbox strategy game with quite a few RPG elements. focusing on economy, politics, and inter-personal communications.. you start with a single person (aka you) with very limited money and the game starts at the year 1400 in Europe (and by talking to the town crier he will actually tell you things that historically happened IRL on that year) and feature some cities such as London, Paris or Hamburg. so you have to get married and have children, start a business empire (, anything from a tavern or brothel, to a blacksmith or farm, thieves guild to perfume shop, to a local chapel/Cathedral (which you can choose which faith your curch is for, Catholic or Protestant) or cemetery), try and get given nobility titles and run for political office (alot of different positions you can get, all of which pay differently and give you special abilitys. the Guard Captain can command city guards, and take people to the dungeon where you can torture them to admit a crimes they made which you can use to either charge them in court or backmail them.. if your the inquistor anytime you file charges against someone the jury finds you more believable because of that position.. probably the hardest to get is Sovereign, which requires that the current one be both dead along with all his successors, and you must gain a majority vote from all other people who hold office (I think there were around 20 positions? been awhile since i played it)..

anyways, your character ages and when he/she dies, you have to pick one of your children who are above a certain age, and they become your player character and assume the role as head of the dynasty..

The original Friday the 13th, through out most of the film you think Jason is a male slasher but in the end

Spoiler
it was his mother that was doing all the killings.

Blake's 7 swaps out the titular heroic Blake as captain for antihero Avon halfway through it's run.

Babylon 5 also changes it's commander after the first season.

Doctor Who is the most obvious one, where the lead character has been played by 14 different people. :P
