[WIP] Medieval London

Post » Wed Mar 30, 2011 5:13 am

So, I've gotten quite a bit of feedback from my Idea thread. As I've had quite a few people give me the thumbs up, I've decided to officially announce that I've have begun work on my new mod: Medieval London.

Hey guys,

Let me start by saying that I'm not going to make anything up or trick you into believing in a hoax mod. I've read about the other medieval mod, and that is just a shame. I've made plenty of mods before this one, and I have no intention of giving up my good name.

What I have planned is totally different. It may take a while, and it may not be an exact replica, but it will be pretty darn close.

Sneak Peek of the Thames District (London Bridge): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S1q3BOioI-4

Official Trailer for the mod: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GeUPMb2jA44

What is this mod?

I'm planning to build London, just London, as it was in 1250. You'll find London Bridge, as it was in 1250, Westminister Abbey, and even the Tower of London. I've done extensive research, and it seems feasible. The only problems being the specific architecture of the cathedrals and Houses of Parliment. But, this can be worked out somehow. The vanilla meshes for cathedrals can be edited, and I'm sure there is a building that can be used for the H.P.

I'll have castle walls around the whole city, so all you can see is the city, and all I'll have to build is the city. This way, the mod doesn't become this huge project that turns into a hoax. Also, smaller sections of wall will section off the city into seven areas.

Military buildings will be near the north side of London. You'll be able to watch knights practice with swords, ride horses, and shoot arrows.

Finally, I've incorporated the cities of Southwark and Westminster into the London city walls. This is a little inaccurate, but it will give the player more area to explore.

Why make this mod?

Well, first off, I love the city of London. I also love the idea of putting a real world place into oblivion. How much fun would it be to walk around a real world city inside a game? Finally, it's a shame that the other mod went to waste. So I want to resurrect a part of it, just a part, and make it reality.

Do you have a release date in mind?

Not at the moment. This is really just a casual project. It may take a while due to school and real life.

New Section: Interior Designing (Your chance to participate!)

Ok, what I'm going to do is open the mod up to the public. If you want to (I'm not forcing you), and if you have the time, go ahead and make an interior that you would like to see in the mod. You may use any interior from the following list:

HouseLowerinterior01
HouseLowerinterior02
HouseLowerinterior03
ChorrolHouseMiddle03Interior
ChorrolHouseMiddle07Interior

Now, if I think the interior will fit in with London, I'll add it. I may tweak it to make it historically accurate, so sorry if it ends up a little different.

Rules:

You may make up to four NPCs for the house, but do not give them any packages please.

Please do not put any books in the house. Oblivion books will be replaced later on.

There must be at least one bed in the house.

No more than one weapon per house! The weapons must be either a dagger, shortsword, or war axe. NO weapons can be placed on an NPC! If you feel that more than one weapon or an armed NPC is necessary, tell me your reason and I'll decide.

Armor cannot be used in any context. If you feel that the armor is necessary, tell me your reason and I'll decide.

Do not pathgrid the house. It just gives me a headache, because sometimes, people might mess up and make an extra path point somewhere way outside the interior, and I have to delete these. I don't like doing that. Please leave pathgriding to me.

Do not put any hostile NPCs or creatures inside the house. It's a house, not a I want to eat your face gorefest.

Please refrain from attaching the interior to an outside cell. It's a pain to delete, and there's that risk that I might dirty the mod. Ugh...

To send the interior, just attach it to an email and send it to me at tau434@gmail.com

Prizes

At the end of the contest, I will pick an interior submitted by a user that I found to be creative, funny, good, or whatever. I will only choose one though, so try to make something stand out in your interior. From there you'll win the following perks. Like I said, not much, just want to get you pumped for the mod.

1. I have set aside several upper class houses in some of the districts. The winner will be able to take one of these houses, throw all the rules out the door, and customize it however they want. (Well, as long as it doesn't include something inappropriate or just outright unacceptable).

2. The winner will get a pre-release version of the mod before anyone else. How long before everyone else? About a week or two. I'll discuss this further with the winner when the time comes.

So, please submit some interiors and get some big perks.

Thanks!

Progress:

District 1 (Residential w/ Military): Being Planned (0%)

District 2 (Residential w/ Military): Built; Working on interior, cluttering, and exterior building placing. (55%)

District 3 (Residential w/ St Paul's): Working on St Paul's and surroundings (5%)

District 4 (Banks of Thames w/ Tower of London): Basic Landscaping and Planning (2%)

District 5 (London Bridge): Finished (100%)

District 6 (Southwark): Finished (100%)

District 7 (Westminster): Being Considered for Elimination (0%)

Progress Report 5/18

Section 1 (Residential/Military Area): Cancelled for the moment and will only be reopened if time allows.

Section 2 (Residential/Military Area): Section 2 is the largest section of Medieval London. However, it is also one of the two sections to house military bases. Purely residential, Section 2 boasts a nice town square where you can shop or simply walk around. Other than that, feel free to explore the countless churches lining its streets. Done except for the majority of the interiors and the NPCs.

Section 3 (St. Paul's): This district houses an iconic landmark in English history: St. Paul's Cathedral. It is also home to the only other military base in London. Mostly residential, Section 3 boasts much of the same offerings of Section 2 with a little more shopping added in.
Horror and thrill seekers hold your breath no longer, for Section 3 is also notorious for its "Forbidden Section". This walled off part of London has been evacuated by royal decree, and is vigilantly guarded by the city watch. What secrets and mysteries lie beyond that great wall? Beware the Forbidden Section, for those who enter are trapped forever. Landscaping and exterior building in progress.

Section 4 (Tower of London/Waterfront): This lively district is situated on the banks of the Thames. Make sure you visit the famous Tower of London, or wander the docks and shipyards. Section 4 is also home to the only Alchemist in London; those of you looking for a little "magic" should definitely drop by for some interesting potions and ingredients. Landscaping and exterior building in progress.

Section 5 (The London Bridge): Once a densely populated structure, the old London Bridge houses several houses and lots of street vendors. The inns lining the sides of the bridge are also famous for good service and food. Section 5 is completely done.

Section 6 (Southwark): If you were expecting another peaceful district, think again. Southwark has been overrun by Welsh Sympathizers angry over Henry III recent hostility with Wales. Aided by French advisors, these brutes have sacked and burned the city, leaving it in flames. Journey into the ruins and help the remaining guards eliminate the threat before it is too late. All enemies and allies respawn in three days, so you can continue the battle as long as you want to. Section 6 is nearly done, with some final NPCs needing placement.

Section 7 (Westminster): Temporarily on hold; the district is still up-in-the-air.

Thanks Dudish.

I finally got that screenshot up. It's of London Bridge. Keep in mind that this is just a tentative design. The little house you see will be duplicated so the entire bridge is covered in buildings. Also, ships will be added on the bridge's supports to mimic the actual design of 1209.

Sweet...
Just a suggestion, I think you should make the two walls taller. And you gotta have some building variety...

Oh, yeah, should have mentioned that. By duplicate, I meant to say placing more houses, not literally duplicate them. Hehe...sorry. And the bridge "gates" will be changed, rest assured. I just don't know what to put in their place right now.

You are a busy guy, haha! This seems like a cool idea, I've never been to London, but maybe I can get an idea of it in your mod.

LOL, citizen86, of all people to find this thread! What's up?

Like I said, this mod is a casual project; I tend to come up with a lot of ideas, then slowly work on them in bursts. One mod for an hour, then do another the next week for another hour or two.

Ahh! Big ben. Sadly, that was built in 1288. I've recently decided to place the setting of the mod in 1250. Sorry. :)

No problems Kroot, I wasn't upset or anything ;) , and maybe it's good to have a few projects to work on, it probably helps keep each one fresh so you don't burn out on a specific one.

Looking forward to seeing what you do with this one.

Hey guys,

Let me a give you a quick update on the mod's progress.

I have divided London into five sections: Two residential (outer areas), two on the banks of the Thames (heart of the city), and one for the London Bridge itself.

As for the London Bridge, the exterior is done. I have a new screenshot, but I can't put it up till later tonight.

I'm also proud to announce that the mod will add new books to the game. An example is a classic fairy tale about a man and a golden arm.

Finally, I have one final question. What should the weather be like? London is usually overcast, but I could make it sunny sometimes. What do you think?

Hmmm, I think this could be a cool project, but to me that doesn't really.... remind me of london at all? Like it's just an Oblivion house on an Oblivion Bridge...

Sorry. >w< But I do think the concept it cool! 8D

Are you serious??? The man with the golden arm?!?!?!?!? That stories been in my family for decades!!! Every year when we go to my cottage up north my uncle tells that fairy tale!
And I agree. Overcast, but sometimes sunny. And snowy in the winter.
I have a question: what will the clutter be like. In the 1200s, London was a pretty dirty place, so I hope you try to replicate that. Alleyways, boxes, and oh! You gotta have homeless people!
Is it possible that we could see an attempted mug or two in the alleyways???

A very good idea! I hope you get this finished. Once the city is expanded you could expand the mod so it could add the areas around :)

Not all of London. Most of the poorer areas were breeding grounds for diseases amongst the poorer, dirtier people. That IS a rather famous aspect of London, the contrast in cleanliness between the poor and the rich.

Also, since you're planning on making the bridge it's own cell, you're going to add collision boxes to the sides, right? So that people don't jump off and swim out of the cell? Also, unless the characters line of sight is blocked, you're going to have to construct a small landscape around the area so that it seems like a real place when you're looking out from the bridge.

One more thing, make sure that when you design NPC's, you keep in mind that armor wasn't something everyone walked around in, or even had around them at most periods of time. Nobles were te only ones who generally joined the military anyways, so don't be giving expensive pieces of equipment to the lower class.

Hopefully my contributions help. One thing that could really impress people is if you managed to get custom meshes and textures for the buildings/walls/bridge/etc. to more resemble real life, but if this is just a casual project you may not really desire to spend the time working on finding a person who can make them.

coobster: Will consider the resource, thanks! However, London is the stopping point for this mod. There will be no countryside or outlying area to explore.

demonsshade: Don't worry, the bridge has been taken care of; you'll see what I'm talking about when I put up the new screenshot.

Finally, does anyone know of a building in the game or a mod that looks like the Houses of Parliment?

Edit: Sorry, I forgot about your questions Dudish.

Attempted muggings are not really that possible. I could make thieves and perhaps burly men that demand money, but a whole scripted fight like that might be difficult.

Cluttering: Yes, it will be mostly dirty, but I'll try my best to put hints of elegance and beauty here and there.

Hey, was there when the Medieval mod was discontinued.. really a shame but anyway, goodluck on the mod! Do you think it's even possible to have realistic medieval buildings? Haven't seen any of them on Nexus =/

Also, any plans on guards and castle in the city itself?

I believe that I can get as close as possible...and that the layout and resemblance is the most important thing. I mean, this is not going to be exact; that would be impossible. But, like I said, it will be damn close.

Besides, I've been able to find a few pieces of architecture lying around on Nexus. :)

This looks good so far! :D I like the street, it looks a bit like Oblivion still, but much more like London now! you should put like, sheep wandering in the street and maybe dirty it up a bit, as London streets used to be very filthy and disgusting and disease ridden. Oh, and rats too! :D

One other thing is that I don't think those posts should be standing ON the boats. The boats are between the legs of the bridge, not under them. Other than that, this is coming along very nicely!

Actually, that's a common misconception. The posts appear to be to the side, but they actually rest on the boats. Here: http://scribalterror.blogs.com/scribal_terror/images/2008/05/19/p98y.jpg
