Its funny that you'd say that. I managed to skip two years of art fundamentals (sculpting, drawing, painting and the like) because of my portfolio. Which was strictly digital and http://img830.imageshack.us/img830/467/mwconcept7.jpg

Speaking of which. Who drew it? It was done internally, right?

Thats pretty cool. In art I would definitely say portfolio trumps pretty much anything else.

Is there ever a point you reach where you can say, "This is good. I like this," or are you stuck always thinking what you do is terrible?

Yeah, I get to a point where Im satisfied with something enough to let it go eventually, but it takes alot of itteration and ultimately I always know it can be improved. But you have to move on and use what you learned to improve your next piece or you will never finish anything. Ive looked at some of my older work, which I thought was cool at the time and think to miself this was terrible, what was I thinking. But then you think well I wouldnt have grown as an artist if I didnt do those pieces as well.

is there anywhere I can learn texturing/organic modeling?

oh and BTW do you guys use Blender, 3ds max, or something else?

Plenty of sites,

Hah, back in highschool I submitted a (in retrospect, aweful) AP portfolio with a "fantasy art" concentration cause I wanted to spend all year drawing half naked people. I'd say half of it ended up being TES related  One was a self portrait of me in an Oblivion hoodie

I should really stop posting random anecdotes, this is turning into a "meet the devs and Lady N" thread.

thanks for the websites, I have 3dsmax, but I like blender a lot better, I don't think there is really that much difference between the 2 and I have never heard of Zbrush before so I am gonna have to check it out and I kinda assumed you used photoshop, what else is there?

I will look forward to (hopefully) seeing your ES artwork in the near future. The stuff on your site looks awesome!

I know I can't ask questions about Skyrim, but what about other Elder Scrolls stuff? If I can, I'd just like to ask what the deal with Nerastarel's House was in Oblivion. So, what was the deal with Nerastarel's House in Oblivion? I mean, was it an unfinished quest, or what?

I'm still using some of the TR concept art I did in my portfolio, although I did make some improvements thank goodness. :) (not my dA account, that is all old. I should take that out of my sig...)

My degree is in mathematics. My first program was on a TRS-80. Using paper tape. Yeah, I know.

Sadly, I built the tutorial dungeon in Daggerfall. So you can blame me.

Wow - Something us real old folks can identify with. I sold TRS-80's at Radio Shack when I was in college (I know, I know, I'm ancient). I used to tell people that it had a whole 4K of memory. If you wanted, you could expand it to 16K, "imagine that, 16 thousand bites if memory, you will never need any more than that"

I wonder if that line would work today?

The biggest difference between Blender and Max (or Blender and anything, for that matter) is interface. Blender's is nothing like anything else out there, while Max is relatively similar to Maya and really any other windows program. Zbrush is a whole lot of fun, especially if you've got a tablet <3

@vsion: Very nice sculpt, especially like the detail with the open ripcage. Watched the first part of the tutorial you made, could readf this kinda stuff all day long, lol!!! I already requested this before, but didn't get noticed in the flood of posts. Is there any chance for a "making of" of Skyrim after release. I'd love to see some of the artists' works while in progress. :)

I'm a big Blender fan and for hobby or modding issues it's a great alternative to highly expensive professional software. At the current stage it is already so powerful that only a few ppl can even make full use of it and it's not the price of an application that let's you become a good modeler. It's practice, practice and again practice and except some minor things concerning topology tools it's pretty much the same workflow as in Max or Maya. I used Blender models in ZBrush aswell and it looks just fine if topology had been prepaired right.

PS: Can any of you devs plz make sure, we 3D modelers here get a proper export/ import plugin in time, in case new file format is not an alteration of gamebryo. My life and mental health is depending on that you know?!!!

thats why I think ill stick with Blender, I already know the interface of it. I also thought that Blender was a better renderer, becuase of the radiosity. Also have you seen blender 2.5 they changed the interface a lot, so I can either learn the new blender or 3ds max. So I guess I will have to learn Zbrush too, great...

i struggle to think of questions not having to do with skyrim and instead, im completely ignored while everyone talks about art...

seemed kinda pointless to ask anything seeing how the whole topic has decided to shift onto discussing ancient technology and the typical stuff skilled artists tell people who svck at drawing...

meh, not having a very good day...

kinda irritates me when im ignored...

...and depresses me.

just wanted to know how you guys came up with the aedra and daedra, and which your favorites of each were... incase you guys just missed the question and i got depressed over nothing.

Hey!

And don't think you're being ignored. I asked questions in the first thread and had none of them answered. There's only so many developers and I doubt they have the time to answer a lot of the questions here.

Alright developers, there's gotta be one of you virtuoso rockers in there somewhere.

Do any of you play instruments? If so, which instrument and how long have you done it? Has it only ever been just a hobby on the side?

I know a few people here that play instruments and are in bands. I've played guitar since I was a wee lad growing up in the Arctic Tundra's of Minnesota. Too many guitars to list, none of them really all that nice. I do have an old Japanese Westone from the 80’s that I love. It’s ugly but plays and sounds fantastic. The real Japanese ones are actually getting hard to come by. I also play some bass. I’m no funkmaster, but I can rock out some tool when I get the chance to play. I have a regular old passive Warwick Corvette/markbass rig that is my fav on the low end.

Somewhat off-topic but I was asked the first two questions during an interview; I quickly responded with "What is your favorite color?" Laughs were had.

To the devs, I'll be graduating college soon with a BS in Computer Science and Game Development. I was wondering if in your experience you've found the compensation in the Games Industry to be comparable to other jobs in your field, as I've heard it's slightly less overall. Money wouldn't be a deal-breaker for wanting to get into the industry, but it's nice to know what to expect.

I actually didn't answer this question at first because I don't know the origins of their design, but now I see the second part. My favorites are probably Sheogorath and Kynareth.

If Bethesda decided to be stingy would you be happy using Blender to make all the 3D models? Or do you prefer the software that Bethesda buys for you?
