Meet the Devs #4

Post » Sun Oct 18, 2009 3:32 am

So...would it destroy the established TES Lore to have a partially-feathered variety of Argonians? 'Cause there's been discussion about it in another thread, and getting an answer from a dev would be cool. I don't think it's something that would be added into the game, but I want to know more specifically if something like small feathered patches or crests on Argonians would be completely detrimental to continuity.

I think it would look damn-cool, if it wasn't overdone.

If 42 is the answer then what was the question?

So, I made it through all the replies on this particular topic and I cannot find these questions being posted anywhere else, so here we go:

1. A couple of years ago my father, who is 55 years old, tried to make me quit playing computer and video games because he claimed they're just for kids. Blasphemy, I know. Well, he didn't succeed. My question is what age you guys are? Is there anyone as old as my father(or maybe even older)?

2. Which one of you is the best one at the things you do? Feel free to claim the honour for yourselves!

3. If you could've chosen one game that you would've like to have made, which one would it be?

4. Why does my food get old so fast?? :ermm:

Thanks for doing such a fantastic job!

I have a couple questions/comments from this. I'm currently a freelance copywriter myself, so I have some vested interest here

If designers are expected to both write and execute their content, doesn't that take away from the polish of either (the quality of both story and execution)? [edit] What I mean here is that dedicated writers could oversee the entire narrative development process, and ensure continuity and synergy between individuated story arcs and universe lore. Is the rarity of contract writers due to economic considerations more than anything?

Also: who writes all the books, then?

These are really good questions, and a real answer would take a very long time. It essentially comes down to there not being enough for a dedicated writer to do over the entire course of development. That's not to say that writing isn't important during all phases, but there's also a lot of time spent getting scripting working, debugging packages, etc. that is more than just pure writing -- it's working in the tool that actually gets the content into the game.

Most full-time writers (not all, but most) are not technical enough to work in the tools like that, nor do they have a good sense of what makes for a good interactive story. And if you have someone who does have all those skills, you'd be wasting their talents by not having them implement their content.

Hopefully that makes sense. Like I said, there are full-time writers in the games industry, but I don't think they are on salary anywhere. Look up Susan O'Connor's credits (her resume is long) and you can see that there is definitely a need for the services of a full-time writer, but not full-time at a single studio.

If somebody knows of a counter-example somewhere else in the industry, I'd love to know about it.

Whew! OK, lighter questions from here on out. Justifying my role/job is too much!

Several times.
I know some people stay and play video games after hours sometimes - and we do have a board game night on Thursdays.
I never actually played Amiga <_<
Bow! I'm a sniper in any game that will let me.

ICO. (Can't wait for The Last Guardian.)
This one! The future is now!
In order to answer this question I'd need to finally get farther in a TES game.
All the awesome people I get to work with.
I've never been to either, but I'm a little scared of Australia (so much flora/fauna that can kill you!).
Awesome awesome. Did you see that 45:00 internal NASA video of Shuttle launch footage that got put on YouTube recently? It's amazing, if you haven't—brought tears to my eyes. You can find it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W2VygftZSCs

EDIT: Man, how have I ended up right at the top of a page so often? Crazytown!

EDIT 2: Let's answer more questions!

1) What is your favourite movie of all time?

2) Favourite type of music?...rock,dance,hip-hop etc.

3) Have you played Minecraft? if so, what do you think of it.

4) Favourite game genre?

1) The Virgin Suicides, followed quickly by Lost in Translation. I'm a bit of a Sofia Coppola fan.
2) Indie rock, I guess, but I listen to a little of almost everything (not much metal though, besides Sunn O))), and my country listening is mostly alt. country like Neko Case, Nickel Creek, Punch Brothers, etc.)
3) Yes, I briefly got addicted to it. Haven't played much recently 'cause I've been so busy with work.
4) Tough to say. RPGs probably, but what I like best are works that exhibit a strong vision from what seems like a singular source. Fumito Ueda's games appeal to me because he's such an auteur—every element of his games reflects his vision so well, even though the game is actually made by many members of a team. I felt the same way about LIMBO, most recently.

Have you been so engrossed in your work you've stayed on way too late?

Sometimes, but usually when I'm staying late I know I will be, when I've got a lot to accomplish. When I get into a groove it's not hard to stay very, very late into the night (sometimes overnight).
