Meet the Devs #5

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 9:21 pm

Okay, couple of questions from little ol' me. Hi from Holland by the way, you guys are in my 'people and companies to worship' book.

1) If you guys are slacking off how do you get pushed back to work? A whip for general use? Todd Howard giving a glare of Doom? Threatening to cut coffee use?
2) Do you guys actually talk to the janitors and kitchen staff as well or are they considered not to be talked to?
3) Do you actually see the cleaning crew or do you have ninja's that clean up so sneakily you can't help but wonder how they do it?
4) Now that I think about question 1. How is the coffee machine? Still broken and resulting in a couple of dev's with serious withdrawal symptoms or did you get the holy machine fixed?
5) Starbucks..love or hate?

What does that mean now... :(

He's joking, obviously. They can't tell anything about Skyrim. ;)

Let's hear some more responses, devs! (So-crates' answer only sorta counts.)

I'd seen Oblivion before, but had never played it, since I'm not generally a fan of high-fantasy stuff.

I think Skyrim would benefit from someone who is not into high fantasy. The field is stale, and by no means isolated. Its good to bring in people who like other things and who aren't invested in keeping to a specific genre. Breeds creativity :)

I found this response from killmoms a bit worrisome, too. Though, I think Lady_N is somewhat in the right here. Besides, I'm sure not all jobs at BGS are involved directly with the "creative" process.

Well, aren't you the charmer..

Agree!

I think at the end of Fallout there was a fans v. devs Team Fortress 2 match at some point. Maybe we could do something like that again once we're, you know, not working so hard. :dead:

I would love to participate in such a match. Besides the fact that TF2 is awesome.

This is extremely catchy and fun!

Since we all know the world will end in 2012, you have to be excited that the last major title that you worked on was something as epic as the Elder Scrolls, right?

What was the best prank done at the office?

Seconded.

We do! We even have an ailing Compaq Presario 425 that we keep alive for the sole purpose of playing Arena.

"Take On Me" by a-ha is a given for everybody, so I'll go with "Cars" by Fear Factory.

Keeping such a computer around for that very reason is epic and quite admirable.

Take On Me is quite a great karaoke song.

Valve had recently http://www.teamfortress.com/post.php?id=4130&p=1(and may still have) with certain little game. Does Bethesda have same problem and/or is any countermeasures taken?

Super seconded! Love Minecraft! (And TF2.) Curious about the devs' opinions.

Did any of you devs grow up on a farm or at least some sort of household that had a bagillion-and-a-half pets like me?

I think it's because most of the devs are on a holiday break so they aren't really active on the forums. Though their twitter pvssyr is alive and well haha.

I want to ask anyone in Softworks:

Do you have an anolyst who correlates market trends with probable market-share allowance?

If so, do you have a task force allocated to probable sociology and mass market appeals?

If either of the above is true (or both) I want to know the following:

Did it ever play into your strategy that 2011 would be the "year of the Celts" i.e. Thor etc.?

Also, I have calculated nearly 8650 points of data regarding electronic releases, weighting and forging reasonable points. With BGS I saw that the biggest jump would be December and that the two highest points would be the 6th and the 16th... too bad I never took the mean or I would have pin pointed the VGAs. With all of the other data compiled since my initial manifesto, I created a future model for EA, Activision, Microsoft Game Studios, Lionhead, and Bethesda Game Studios.

I have three seminars and 167 points of anticipated data to add to the manifesto in the upcoming two months. If my data holds as true as it has been thus far, I may be able to model a marketing tool of predictive quality that should engender reasonable results over 70% of the time. My optimism is throttled by realism here. So we shall see.

Ultimately what I need to know now is from anyone in Bethesda Softworks is whether or not monies spent by other developers/publishers impacted your release/announcement plans?

Hahahaha! Oh god yes, a 70% is certainly still a "D"!

But I would question any marketing anolyst to rebuke a perceptive probability quotient of 70%.

A "D" is better that the 30% chance of being wrong.

Hey Beth,

Hire Sylt. Dude knows how to work a spreadsheet. He makes all the ladies (men?) swoon with his detailed anolyses of marketing trends and wicked perceptive probability quotients.

And then, right after, hire me. Because spending hours making bug notes on one tiny bit of a barely functioning video game in an attempt to break it by emulating the playing behaviors of 9-year-olds and intelligent chimpanzees? That sounds like a damned fine initiation to the industry.

1) How often do you guys clean your keyboards?

2) If you accidentally sneeze on your monitor do you use your sleeve or clean it properly?

3) Have you ever had a power surge, black out, or computer malfunction of some kind that ruined a lot of your work?

1) I wait until the keyboard breaks and then I ask IT to give me another one. Or until I spill my coffee in it.

2) I leave it on there. I like the refracting effect the snot provides.

3) When I test-fired the prototype tesla cannon, it overloaded the entire Eastern Seaboard's power grid and ground all of our infrastructure to a halt for 72 hours.

The holiday party is usually pretty swanky. I was, and I wore a suit. :foodndrink:

Missed this one the first time around. Joni Mitchell, in the mid-70s, probably right after Hejira came out. Fantastic album.

And yes, the holiday party was a swanky, very fun affair. I wore black Henleys, a blue button-down shirt, and white tie. I still don't own a full suit. :sadvaultboy:

2) Has anything funny happened to you lately?

3) Did any of you guys get to peep at Doom 4 yet? :whistling:

4) What book would you like see turned into a game?

5) When you buy a new game, do you prefer to know as much as possible about it beforehand or know little or nothing at all?

6) What are some of your all time favorite game monsters?

7) Who is your favorite artist?

Here's a few answers...

1) Godflesh. Hands down.

4) World War Z. Would love to see zombie apocalypse on a global scale. Make it like a real-time strategy game where armies have to fight off the undead. Research trees to slow down the advance of the infection, etc.

5) I love to know as much as I can about it.

6) I really liked the colossus creatures in Shadow of the Colossus. They were very memorable and absolutely amazing. I am also usually amazed/alarmed/disgusted by the Silent Hill series of creatures.

7) My favorite artists of all time are old-school fantasy guys. There's just something about those old covers that brings me back... Brom, Larry Elmore, Clyde Caldwell, Alan Lee are some of the best.

My favourite show too, though my fav character is Sherlock Holmes. But they're a bit similar in ways anyway.
