Meet the Devs #7

Do you guys ever feel limited in anyway making a game for consoles? Not being a PC gamer snob I'm just wondering, as the debate still goes on as to whether the console limits technical advances/possibilities in games.

I have some questions in regards to ESRB and ratings in general. I don't know who would be best to answer some of these questions, but a lot of the questions should apply to any devs.

1. What exactly do you submit to a ratings board? Do you just send them the full game and let them dig through it, or do you have to send the scripts for dialogue or anything in a way that's easier to access? (it seems kind of impractical for a ratings board to make a truly informed decision within a limited time span when it comes to a game from the TES series because they are so rich in detail)
2. Have you ever been really surprised by the rating a game you worked on received?
3. Have you ever had to go back and make changes to something you or another dev did to make a certain rating? (for instance I know 'morphine' was changed to 'med-x' in fallout 3 thanks to ratings board in australia)
4. Are you ever thankful that you were forced to make a change? (Personally I think 'med-x' is a better name anyway, and I know others who agree.)
5. Have you ever 'slipped something by' that you're really surprised a ratings board didn't mention?

Bonus: How many acts are in the full version of 'The Lusty Argonian Maid'? (I'm sure one of you has a full version! I'm sure!!

I never got around to the first or second ones simply cause they're much more like Privateer then Freespace and the economic stuff doesn't interest me as much as getting weapons and blowing things up. The third I got via a Steam sale and at the recommendation of a friend who knows what I like - but I haven't put much time into it yet.

Yeah, they're definitely time consuming: snail's pace + ginormous content = ridiculous amounts of play time. A single game could easily get up to 1000 hours, but you can bypass most of the economy stuff and get into action pretty quickly. I like to think of it as Freelancer on steroids. :D

Todd Howard and his team at Bethesda Softworks have always been the most community-friendly company in the gaming universe. They truly love their fans and are always happy to listen to what we have to say - sometimes actually applying it to their games.

Aside from the superb games that Bethesda Softworks creates, it is this level of care and commitment to this community that makes Bethesda Softworks my favorite game creator/publisher. I really feel as though each of us makes a difference and that the games we want will always be crafted to perfection through the process of fan participation/suggestions and the developer's talent and skilled use of such attributes.

Todd, many thanks to you and your talented team for the past 16 years of excellence. I eagerly await TESV: Skyrim to see how you will again go far beyond simply "pushing the envelope". ;)

Artists always want more polys and higher res textures.
Programmers always want more memory and faster processors.
Designers want... um... a "make game" button! That reads their minds and makes things exactly how they want it without any bugs.

Come to think of it - I want a button like that too.

And this includes PC as well as consoles - imagine what we could do if everyone had 8-core machines with a full terabyte of ram! And you know - in 5 years I'm going to look back on this post and pat myself on the head saying "how quaint". :D

Did you play Morrowind or Oblivion (heavily) modded?

If yes, did it influenced your work? Which mods did amaze you the most and why? Did you speak to some modders about how to improve the game in certain ways or how to make it easier to mod?

If this has been asked before a link would be nice ;)

I've been following this thread since its conception announcement day, and so I have a few humble questions for the developers.

1) What would you say Bethesda Game Studios' greatest strength is (in either the games it develops or the way it develops its games, or its organizational structure, or whatever really) when compared to other developers in the industry?

2) Duck season, or wabbit season?

What is your thought process in creating NPCs and quests? Do you already have an idea/direction form someone else of what the quest is to accomplish and create the NPCs to fit? Or do you come up with quest and NPC ideas individually, and discuss with other game designers? Who makes the decisions if it is OK for the game - is there a central story lead?

Also, do you have lore gurus that know every esoteric fact to make sure you don't add anything that breaks canon?

For the Game Designers...what was your major in college? Programming? And if you took Game Design courses, did the courses help in a major way with your Game designing? I want to become a designer too :D

Science Fiction... galactic exploration. Like Starflight, only with much deeper RPG elements.

If you guys were put in charge of a Star Trek Game with the thought and depth of freedom that you're so good at I would explode with joy. Explode. With. Joy.

do you guys look at most of the suggestions we make?

ever thought about adding a pop culture reference to a game? like recreating a scene from a movie with a slight editing to make it lore apropriat?

a redguard and a nord enter a room with filled with imperials and maybe a khajit. one of the imperials is eating scrib jelly....

replace all swearing with n'wah and swit and the make the bible rant about the nine divines and you have a pretty decent scene

Jello:

1. Evil incarnate spawn of rendered ungulate?
2. Yummy goodness of warm and fuzzy?

Answer correctly...

Do you guys use real word mythology to inspire lore or does it mostly come from your own imaginations?
(sorry if this has already been asked)

I have two questions that I highly doubt that you could answer.

1.)is there any chance of us ever finding out the story of the eye of argonia? maybe in a book or a sequal to redguard? I know its wishing to get information but I've been waiting since redguard came out.

2.)is there any news on the release date of the next elder scrolls book?

and finally one more you might be able to answer

3.)what do you think of the obscure text section of the imperial library? the books that are not in the game but are released by some ex devs. do you consider them actual lore or more on par with fan fiction?

That makes sense... ish :P

MAN Skyrim is going to be awesome.

A wild Question appears!

Which one of you put all those Pokémon references in Morrowind? Come on, own up :cheat: *

*this smiley is used as it resembles a mutated Pikachu :P

I finally thought of a question. Does anyone have an idea on when it will be released in Canada, and other places that celebrate Remembrance Day? In most of Canada, all of the stores are closed on the eleventh. Will we be getting it a day late, or a day early? And thanks again for the great games.
