Meet the Devs #10

What?? FF7 is amazing! I had about 11 playthroughs and i still didnt get the story quite. Whats so great about FF7 is basically the story and how the music enhances it. And the story is really complicated! And when you think you get it, you really don't. I hardly meet anyone who has truly got the story right. It's so amazingly well thought through, it gives me the chills. Liquid Ocelot is a great villain in MGS and imma let him finish. But Sephiroth and Jenova are the most bad ass villains of all time. Of all time!

Dear Bethesda,

I'm curious as to what you guys think of the excellent Fable series, and if you've taken any inspiration from it for your own well-respected series. Thank you!

I started in on Oblivion GotY a while ago, before I got SUUUUUPER busy. One of these days I'll have to pop it back in the Xbox and keep playing. I have Morrowind on Steam but haven't started it yet, mostly because I'm rarely in Windows at home, and at work I'm too busy. As for Daggerfall or Arena? Can't say I've tried either. I have trouble getting into older games that I didn't play the first time 'round (no nostalgia factor to enhance the experience).

Going off that, what game would you say you have the most nostalgic feeling for? A game you can look back to and say "Aah, those were the days" more than any other?

This really cracked me up

As a non-American I really don't know that much about American football or baseball, but I'm guessing that the Steelers, the Eagles and whatever those teams are called belongs to one of those sports? Do any of the Dev's follow any other, more international sport? Like football (what you call "soccer"), ice-hockey or basketball?

Final Fantasy VI and Chrono Trigger. Just hearing the music from those games is enough to kick me back into a nostalgic haze. Also Commander Keen, TIE Fighter, and Myst/Riven for the PC.

If you think FF7's music is great, you really need to give FF6 another chance. Uematsu's best work, by far. Leitmotif is strong stuff, and when you make the characters' themes interlock, you have won at game score.

I'm a pretty big fan of the Command and Conquer series - especially the Red Alert spinoffs. And the Warcraft and Starcraft games. Though Age of Empires is also a very good game.

What race do you prefer in StarCraft?

Also, while I'm here, have you played any of my top 10 games (not including 1, obviously :P)? And if you haven't tried VVVVVV, do so now.

10) Super Scribblenauts
9) Rayman 2: The Great Escape
8) VVVVVV
7) Metroid Prime 3: Corruption
6) Super Smash Bros. Melee
5) Pokémon Diamond
4) Half-Life 2
3) Starcraft 1+2
2) Portal
1) Morrowind

I don't wish to derail the thread, but are you at all familiar with FF IV's music? I am of the opinion that, taken as a whole, it is the greatest soundtrack of any game that has ever been released. I mean, just the http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MlLxN2QqDZc theme alone is enough to make me wilt.

I believe there is an orchestral arrangement of that song, let me see if I can't find it...

*EDIT* I guess its not orchestrated per se, but it is a different version http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ZNY1j7Iyq0.

So how do the devs (I don't care who answers it but I would like to know) pick names for NPC's?

Is there a process, do they use random name generators, or some other method?

And this is for the devs:

Have you ever had a difficult time naming a character? And is there any character you regret naming a particular name?

Names are one of the hardest things to create. It's easier in the Fallout universe because they are modern day names. In that case we use baby name websites, phone books, and just making @#$% up. In the Elder Scrolls universe it's more difficult. We have guidelines for each race. Some are obvious, such as Nord names have a Scandinavian flavor. Some are stranger, like the rules for Argonian and Khajiit names. We use foreign language baby names and foreign language dictionaries. We use historical figures as inspiration but usually make some letter or syllable changes. We even have a random name generator with the rules programmed into it. However, the tyipcal hit rate for a random name generator is about one in a hundred. Even then they frequently become inspirations for sounds and letter combinations rather than outright using them.
