Meet the Devs #10

Post » Thu Jan 20, 2011 5:26 am

Any of the Dev's enjoy noise music?

Such as Sonic Youth, Unwound, Loop, ect?

What is your typical work schedule?

Does Todd have a wife/girlfriend/children?

How tall is Todd in relation to the rest of the team?

Sausage or Bacon? (Bacon!)

Where did you live in LA, dude? I was in Venice, working in Marina del Rey.

(The thread has now become "Devs, meet each other.")

I was in Burbank and then Hollywood, working in Burbank. Post-house across the street from Warner Brothers Studios, called Modern VideoFilm.

Hehe, wow it is a small world. I work with MVF all the time - nice people. I used to live in Toluca Lake and my old office was in that really tall building near Alameda and Pass.

Do you like KotOR? If so, who was your favorite party member?

Also, do you think another KotOR should be made? Not tOR, but another straight up KotOR?

Haha, AT, or NEAR? Disney, eh? Nice. Yeah, I slung DVDs in their DVD department for a year and a half before I got tired of it. Loved my co-workers, just didn't love LA and didn't see a good way to advance towards what I thought I wanted to do at the time.

Ever had an asada burrito from Taco Azteca in Glendale? I highly recommend it. Just went there recently while on vacation in LA visiting friends and it was just as amazing as it was when I left. Their pastor taco is amazing too.

Dang, now I'm hungry just thinking about it. I WISH I could get tacos and burritos here like they have there. :(

A question for developers... It's both general gaming and particularly Skyrim related, sorry.

In this case, magazines got some view in Skyrim or tried to play the game, or got some videos? Anyway, I'm interested, since that preview was roughly one year before scheduled release, how truthful are those previews to finished product?

Does media get 50%, 70% or 90% finished game or how is that done?

In particular Skyrim, if it's possible to answer; if not then in general please.

Holy crap! did you work with David Jessen's team in creative?

it is a *really* small world. I worked on the international side. BTW carnitas burrito at Burrito King in Silverlake FTW!

Well the only logical question after that is, Horde? Or filthy Alliance dog?! :batman:

Edit* just realized with the addition of the Worgen you could literally be a filthy Alliance dog :P

I have two alliance druids (NE and Worgen) and one horde druid (Tauren). The NE druid is my main and raiding toon :)

Any of you devs play DnD? if so whats your favorite class and race

my favorite classes would have to be Bards and warlocks, my favorite races are Minotaurs, shardminds and half-elves

I usually played half-elf sorcerers or rangers in 3.5E. I haven't really found a favorite in 4E since I haven't had much opportunity to play the new edition yet, but I really like what I have played.

I wonder how they changed mages! its been almost 2 years since I last played wow, thinking about getting back :P...

anyway I will repeat my evil question, does Bethesda plan on using Blue-ray discs in the future ??

I know I svck at tech stuff but I heard that a blue ray disc can hold like 20gb or something on it which will enable you guys to make super huge game worlds.

Mages are pretty different since Cataclysm, especially if you're a frost mage.

And the PS3 uses Blu-ray, so we kind of have to use that on that console ;)

Did you have to move when you got hired at Bethesda?

If so, do you ever miss where you used to live, or are you happy where you are now?

Moved from Washington state and left friends (in Washington) and family (in Oregon) to do so. Moving to a place where you know no one is an interesting experience :D But the people working here are all awesome, which helps.

Is my wifes mother a Cylon?

Depends. Has she been hearing strange music recently that no one else can hear?

I ran a game last night actually. I like human fighters in 3rd edition... so many feats! :D

Cats or Dogs?

2 cats and 1 dog... I think the dog is more fun to play with, but also more annoying when I don't feel like playing.

I moved here from Ventura, California, after growing up in Santa Barbara. I got the job after I moved here though. The only thing I don't really like about this place is not being able to ride my motorcycle all year round.

This could be MY answer! I lived in LA for a year and a half and loved the food and weather but hated the city. When the opportunity came up to come make trailers for gamesas I jumped at it. Moving here was actually moving home, as I grew up in the DC area. Like SJML, my family and college friends are in the area too, so it’s nice.

Yeah, I miss the mexican food too. Chipotle is good for scratching that itch but one can only get so far with the taco/burrito basics. Tamales! Enchiladas!

Nah, I worked with Mike Rebel's team in Data at the time. I wasn't doing DVD authoring, I was doing DVD-R duplication for internal stuff (dailies DVDs, approval copies, security screeners, and the like).

One of my favorites is from Oblivion. One of the guys here attacked a merchant. The shopkeeper ran out the door, which is no big deal. While the player is looting the shop, the guy comes back. He had a big sword in his hand and attacked the player. It turns out that the AI was dialed up a bit too high. The shopkeeper "knew" there was a powerful weapon in a chest nearby and the AI sent him to get it.

During the world cup who did you cheer for? Were there inter-office battles?

For me personally, when the Dutch beat the Brazillians it was a world cup win for me. Too bad about the Germans though; they deserved a cup for how they played.

If you could remake any game with your own 'telling' which game would it be?

I personally would remake Diablo 1 and 2. What I mean by remake is basically the same game but updated graphics and more features, not a reworking of mechanics necessarily. What game would you love to see again? (I know many are holding out for a remake of Final Fantasy 7 for example).

Since the Dev's have started answering each others questions instead of ours, maybe the Moderators ought to lock this thread? ;)

Actually hearing the banter of the devs is a nice insight into their person! One of the purposes of this thread is to reveal the kind of people behind the game, and if we learn that through their conversation with each other all the same :)

Sweet. Always great to find a fellow Pacific Northwesterner. Any insight on game development going on here in Oregon? The only company I know of is Garage Games.

I don't understand people who loved FF7—I thought it was horrid.

Final Fantasy VI was the last great FF game. THAT'S one worth re-making. I picture it not even being in 3D, but in a completely hand-drawn 2 (or 2.5) dimensional style with gorgeously hand-animated HD sprites and environments. And a fully orchestral score. And voice-over you could turn off. Or, toggleable between Japanese and English.

You know, since we're in fantasy-land.
