Meet the Devs #11

No one calls me "Thunderjunk"

Todd lovingly calls me "Who?"

You must feel important when it happens.

Aside from the brief thank you to kick off the thread, why doesn't Todd participate in "Meet the Dev" threads?

Just one minor question...

Is Todd Howard slowly becoming the most powerful man on the planet? Because I definitely think so ^.^

At what time do the Bethesda offices traditionally "close"? And consequently, how much much later into the night do you guys work? I could imagine the majority of you never wanting to leave that wonderful place...right? :chaos:

This is something I'd really like to see stickied in all game creator forums. It's an article about why a lot of game creators don't post on forums and it was written by Jeff Vogel from spiderware software.

I got a question. Before you guys really got into the game making business, is this what you wanted to do? And also, I'm an aspiring game maker, any tips you can give for people nowhere near as epic as you guys?

Ah, I actually thought of a good two-part question to ask.

When making a game, have you ever pulled an idea from a fan suggestion? Have you ever pulled an idea from another game?

Which PGE did you like more 1st or 3rd edition?

Good question. And just to let you guys know, my titanic, fiery condemnation awaits a wrong answer. For serious. But it will be even worse if you haven't already read them. Those documents are Tamriel. The rest is details.

WILL EVERYONE STOP TALKING ABOUT CAKE???

:flamethrower:

I don't have any cake.

I'm pitifully re-reading the God of Cake post from Hyperbole and a Half and laughing until I'm near tears. Can't link it because of one tiny f-word. Boo.

Heheh ... well, that's the reason why sometimes they might be lurking and not posting. Todd posts sometimes - but it's like once a year. He's also kinda busy :)
The rest of the Bethesda folks post sometimes in this thread and occasionally in other threads - and of course we have two gorgeous, cuddly community managers :D

Too much posting leads to too much scrutiny from the fans. Not necessarily about what they're posting.. just that..Oh I'm sorry is that game – whatsitcalledagain – ready then? No? Whatcha doing here posting all day? :ooo:

Pulling this thread out of the dustbin not to answer a question but to say that the Arcade Fire is totally awesome and 100% deserved the http://pitchfork.com/news/41559-arcade-fire-win-the-album-of-the-year-grammy/, and that everyone here should go listen to “The Suburbs.” That is all.

I actually have a question(s) for you reguarding your job. (Or at least title here) Is Video Producer a full time job? What do you do when your not making a video? Or are you always, since Bethesda always has several games they are publishing in progress at once... Do you just hop from game to game making all sorts of videos? Do you do any work for random people for free ever, or are you all business? Did you make the Skyrim trailer? (I mean edit of course) And what about the NV trailers? Ok, I'm done pelting you with questions now. :P

Who among you are extreme procrastinators? What I mean by extreme is won't even start it unless the amount of time to finish it completely is twice as long as there is left to get it done.

Hmm, I've heard a lot of people say that it it doesn't quite live up to the hype, and that it isn't as good as their previous records, but I'll give it a listen all the same.

It’s actually such a full-time job that there are now two of me (so to speak)—there’s ALWAYS something to make, whether it’s intended for the public (trailers, online ads/pre-roll, TV advertisemants, etc.) or not (ratings reels, game demo videos, and other super-secret stuff). So yes, we’re hopping around making different videos for all our games pretty much all the time.

I don’t do any freelance work outside of gamesas though. I get my creative outlet at work, so at home I just want to relax and not worry about deadlines. I wouldn’t say I’m “all-business” though, even AT work—we like to have fun/be silly with video at the office from time to time.

I’m not sure how much I can say specifically about the Skyrim announcement trailer, so I’ll just say I did help. As for Fallout:NV, I made the gameplay portion of the E3 2010 trailer (the one with ED-E), but the Dead Money trailer was made exclusively by my counterpart sal go, and she did a bang-up job on it.

Keeping with the "ask killmoms a question!" theme, I wonder whether you, killmoms, are able to use your influence in the studio to affect the game in any way? For example, you might be having lunch with a game designer who is telling you about a quest that they are implementing, and you happen to have a suggestion as to how to make it more awesome. Or perhaps you have influenced the content of the game in some other way? I'm curious as to how seriously you guys take the suggestions of your colleagues- is it possible for an artist to influence how a weapon should animate, or indeed for a video producer to influence how a quest should develop? Thanks.

Yeah I'd like to know this too.

If you had to choose, between the two what would you keep, your eyes or your hands?

Any good pranks at work happen?

I guess so; I can't really speak for the other departments but QA tends to attract the obsessive-compulsives and wannabe-devs. The wannabes, if skilled enough, get recruited into another department, or else they eventually burn out and quit. The obsessive-compulsives - wait I gotta go wash my hands again, brb...

How about one eye and one hand, pirate style? Yar!

Always with the pranks question... no, not that I have seen. Sometimes someone will draw something silly on another person's whiteboard, or indulge an inside joke, or hide their stapler or something but nothing really worth talking about.
