Meet the Devs #11

Post » Wed Jul 21, 2010 5:09 am

With Skyrim's announcement on Saturday, we're excited to open up our latest Bethesda Game Studios' Meet The Devs thread. This thread is your opportunity to get to know the developers working on Skyrim. Should be fun as you'll run into some familiar friends, as well as plenty of new folks to the team.

Please keep in mind this thread is NOT for asking questions to the developers related to Skyrim. There will be a time to ask questions, but not yet, and not in this series of threads. Our amazing forum moderators will keep an eye on posts that aren't in line with the theme of the thread.

Just wanted to post a quick hello to everyone on the forums. Thanks for being here and keeping TES going. Yes, we read a lot of it, and have been for a long time. It's great to finally see a "V - Skyrim" section on here along with Morrowind and Oblivion. Like you, we're fans too, and we're just as excited about this game. The whole team at BGS has been giving this their all for the last several years. The next 11 months should be fun, and this is a great place for the team to hear from you. No, we can't give away info early, so don’t bait us into trouble!

Thanks again for all your support, not just now, but for the last 16 years.

todd

What are your plans for Skyrims release? Will there be a big party with popping corks off of oversized wine bottles or is it much more modest?

2: Dragon Age or Mass Effect?
3: Gameplay and Freedom or Story and Characters?
4: HALO or Gears or War?
5: Fallout 3 or New Vegas?

these very same people complain about no longer being able to exploit core gameplay faults, so this isn't really a credible argument.

when you guys name characters in TES games, do you have like an internal name generator, or do people come up with them on the spot? the nomenclature is really impressively consistent.

I'm no dev, but I can already tell you the answer to that question.

After all, there was a reason they choose to make The Pitt in FO3, rather than some other cities.

What is your favorite James Bond movie? :ninja:
I, personally, am a fan of "The World is Not Enough"

Which Rambo movie is your favorite? :gun:
Tie between "First Blood" and "Rambo III" for me.

Do you have any random stuffed animals (or anything else) near you while you work that you look at whenever you need inspiration?
I don't... :turtle: :frog:

Do you have any weird habits that you do while you're on the computer?
I always have to hold and click a pen. And I sit down on the chair with my legs on the chair and my keyboard on my feet. I'm not sure why... :brokencomputer:

Hi Bethesda crew,

You guys are awesome. I'm not entirely sure why I haven't joined this forum since I've been a massive fan of all the Elder Scrolls. I think my usual excuse was I'll get around to it. O_o Anyway, I was wondering, and this question goes out to all devs and members, if you lived within the elder scrolls universe, what race would you be?

A question about Skyrim I hope you can answer (it's not about unveiling gameplay/features/etc, and it's more to help me decide how and where will I buy it).

I don't know about the other translations, but the Spanish one for Oblivion was pretty..... (how would I say it?) ...BAD :) (to the point that http://academia.clandlan.net/index.php?page=academia/view&id=95, fixing hundreds of translation mistakes) Will Skyrim take a little more care for all of us non-english speakers out there?

I'd like to know (from the sound guy if possible) what software he's using for creating the sounds of skyrim.

And do you have like a pattern you follow while mixing the voices of everything, like a preset eq and compressor etc. where you always start with each voice or do you always do everything from scratch?

Which effects/tools do you use when you mix simple voices?

How do you pitch down the dragon voices so much (I suppose they dont have leprechaun voices) without making them sound low-quality?

and finally- What effects+tools do you use while mixing dragon voices.

I found the sound parts of the GI interviews very interesting. I'd like to join you there at bethesda and become your trainee/intern/"Practical Occupational Experience" in the sound-parts. That's probably impossible I guess, but still, it would be cool. I'm currently studying at an audio engineering (mixing, recording etc.) school and it would be fun to join up to get some experience etc.

Appreciate answers and I hope that the sound dude is on the forums :)

Thanks.

The feeling i had when playing oblivion for the first time was pure epicness, but when i began my second playthrough i began the things that could've been done better. Combat didn't have enough variation in it, faces weren't drawn realistic enough, shops didn't stock up on better items you could save up for when you leveled your character. I could think of a lot more of these things, but these were the main ones that kind've annoyed me :P. (It's still my number 1 game though)

I just think it's weird how developers such as yourselves don't seem to notice these things while you're constantly working with the game. It often seems like the developers don't play their own games so they don't really notice some of the crucial things that could've been done so much better with their game (*cough* combat *cough*).

Could you perhaps explain to me how this is possible? I'm sure it's got something to do with the tight schedule you have to create the game in or with the limited technology available at that time.

And perhaps a more random question now: do youguys at BGS ever have any problems with youngsters knocking on your door begging for a tour around the game studios hoping to meet their gods? If yes, has this ever worked for anyone? If yes, brt.

Enough talk, i'll let you get back to programming the life we'll live in a few months.

Thanks in advance for answering my questions!

If it's anything like Fallout 3's release party, it'll be...well, pretty epic. Much debauchery was had. We all had trouble meeting any of our co-worker's eyes for a week or so after that one...

1: Who DID come up with the Cliffraicers?
2: Dragon Age or Mass Effect?
3: Gameplay and Freedom or Story and Characters?
4: HALO or Gears or War?
5: Fallout 3 or New Vegas?

1. I have no clue. Well, I guess it depends. For any of our creatures, it starts in Todd's / a concept artists head, goes to a character artist, then to an animator, then to a level designer to place it in the world. Some designer is responsible for its AI. Programmers pop in and out as needed to fix bugs with the creature. So, in short, a lot of people. Was there a particular feature of the Cliff Racers about which you were curious?
2. Mass Effect. I just can't get into DA. It's not a bad game. I just...it just doesn't mesh with me.
3. As long as the game's fun, I don't care either way.
4. Halo, although I haven't played much of either.
5. New Vegas, just because I was able to actually approach it with fresh eyes.

A little from column A, a little from column B.

Packers or Steelers? (obviously Packers)

I'm no dev, but I can already tell you the answer to that question.

This man has the right of it. From what I've observed, the office is pretty vociferously pro-Steelers. If there are any Packers fans, they've (wisely) opted to wear their jerseys underneath their clothes.

Do you have any weird habits that you do while you're on the computer?

I have a similar thing: I need a pen nearby that I can chew on. It's always in my pocket, and when I misplace it, I waste minutes looking for it before I can start coding again. I'm nomming it right now!

What would your last words be?

What were your first words?

Do my questions svck?

- "Ow."
- "Apple juice"
- Just this one.

if you lived within the elder scrolls universe, what race would you be?

I usually create myself as a Breton Conjuration wizard. Just cast my highest Summon spell and sit back and chillax while enemies die. :D

I stole the lead programmer's chair. It was an accident, and I eventually gave it back, but still: not the best way to start my first week at my new job.

Since the Mass Effect vs Draogn Age question was answered now we have to know:

Favorite over all squad mates; Mass Effect 1 or Mass Effect 2? And who is your favorite squad mate? (Mine would be Mass Effect 1. And Garrus)
