Meet the Devs #12

Post » Sun Oct 03, 2010 1:54 pm

With Skyrim's announcement on Saturday, we're excited to open up our latest Bethesda Game Studios' Meet The Devs thread. This thread is your opportunity to get to know the developers working on Skyrim. Should be fun as you'll run into some familiar friends, as well as plenty of new folks to the team.

Please keep in mind this thread is NOT for asking questions to the developers related to Skyrim. There will be a time to ask questions, but not yet, and not in this series of threads. Our amazing forum moderators will keep an eye on posts that aren't in line with the theme of the thread.

Just wanted to post a quick hello to everyone on the forums. Thanks for being here and keeping TES going. Yes, we read a lot of it, and have been for a long time. It's great to finally see a "V - Skyrim" section on here along with Morrowind and Oblivion. Like you, we're fans too, and we're just as excited about this game. The whole team at BGS has been giving this their all for the last several years. The next 11 months should be fun, and this is a great place for the team to hear from you. No, we can't give away info early, so don’t bait us into trouble!

Thanks again for all your support, not just now, but for the last 16 years.

todd

People, some posts are going away. This thread is not for asking questions about the game which is clearly said in the opening post. :nono:

You need to switch your avatar back to that heart-achingly cute holiday bunny! Or am I thinking of a different moderator? :spotted owl:

Hello Devs

I have some questions that have confounded me for a long while, they are not Skyrim specific so I hope you can help.

Does Bethesda have an overarching storyline or narrative for The Elder Scrolls franchise? Is there a grand plan for where the series is going?

From your perspective in the studio, is there an established lore? One you may or may not share with the audience? (By this I mean lore that you consider to be canon). Otherwise, do you make it up for each game without being constrained by the previous stories?

Todd rarely posts here, he has other people who read it for him lol.

If I built you guys a PC out of an old game case, would you use it? Not going to because I'm poor but still wanna know lol.

Are you looking to add on to your vocal talent? If so, is there a submission process to be considered? I am of course thinking of myself (I have a wide range of accents and charactery voices to draw from), but I also know a lot of other good talent out here on the west coast.

Which would you say is a better game, Morrowind of Fallout 3? Or if you Don't believe in saying which is better, then on a scale of 1-10, what would you rate both of them :)

which was your favourite dungeon in oblivion (or morrowind if you like) and why?

also, if you could have changed one thing about oblivion, what would it be? I only ask because me and all the rest of the fans selfishly tell everyone on the forums what we didn't like (which must be fairly crushing, although we only do it because we care ) , and I was wondering if the devs had their own pet hates that they just didn't have the time or software to address.

What's crazy about mortal gladiatorial combat?

Anyway, on to the question. What is your favourite part of working on a game? is it coming up with ideas and concepts, is it working to make those ideas reality or is it releasing a finished product? Or sometihng entirely different?

Did any of you play Planescape: Torment and what did you think of it?

P.S. If you didn't, play it. It's a classic and literally the best rpg ever ;)

What view do you hold on rewarding play in RPG's.
Is the constant release of pushing the right buttons to level up and find treasure more important, is it what sells a game for you.
Or is the more creative, story and choice given aspects what drives your work ethics.

Also if you could have a dream where in one night you lived the highlights of a fantasy characters life, who would it be.

Hey devs!

Not sure what "dev" means, but I'm assuming it refers to the programmers who implement and test the software tools that are used by the artists, designers, modelers, writers, etc. At least the following questions are directed toward the "devs" of this nature. Sorry if these questions have been asked already :)

While working on Skyrim, how much of your time do you spend programming new tools vs. adding features vs. maintaining existing code / fixing bugs?
Do you take feature requests directly from the other teams or is there an external change request process to filter and prioritize ideas?
Do you have time to experiment with your own ideas?
Do you work locally and use a build server to deploy to a staging environment? Continuous integration perhaps?

The topic of the #12 forum was listed as "questions of rarity" so I have two quick questions that might end with the answer about something about all things "rare" ....

#1: How do you like your steak?
#2: How often does someone in the office backtalk Todd? (wink)

Hahaha, all kidding aside, here is my real question:

If you guys couldn't be game designers anymore and had to choose a totally different occupation [for whatever crazy and insane reason would cause such a terrible change to our reality (and make me think we're living in the TV show Fringe's alternate universe)] then WHAT ELSE WOULD YOU DO?

Thanks.

Developers. Or that's what I always thought...

But What is your favorite kind of cookie? I like Chocolate Chip. And Sugar Cookies.
How often do you bake cookies? Which type do you bake more?
Do you make them from scratch or do you use the pre-made Break-and-Bake stuff?
