Meet the Devs #14

Post » Wed Mar 30, 2011 4:48 am

With Skyrim's announcement on Saturday, we're excited to open up our latest Bethesda Game Studios' Meet The Devs thread. This thread is your opportunity to get to know the developers working on Skyrim. Should be fun as you'll run into some familiar friends, as well as plenty of new folks to the team.

Please keep in mind this thread is NOT for asking questions to the developers related to Skyrim. There will be a time to ask questions, but not yet, and not in this series of threads. Our amazing forum moderators will keep an eye on posts that aren't in line with the theme of the thread.

Just wanted to post a quick hello to everyone on the forums. Thanks for being here and keeping TES going. Yes, we read a lot of it, and have been for a long time. It's great to finally see a "V - Skyrim" section on here along with Morrowind and Oblivion. Like you, we're fans too, and we're just as excited about this game. The whole team at BGS has been giving this their all for the last several years. The next 11 months should be fun, and this is a great place for the team to hear from you. No, we can't give away info early, so don’t bait us into trouble!

Thanks again for all your support, not just now, but for the last 16 years.

todd

Ok a better question, what exactly do you currently have on your work desk? I.e. a ball of elastic bands or a elder scrolls mug etc.. :D

Does developing a game kind of ruin it for you, as far as playing it?

Just making mods for Dragon Age for a while got me completely sick of actually playing the game, lol.

Charmander, Bulbasaur, or Squirtle?

I never understood why anyone wouldn't take Charmander. One of the easiest decisions in my life.

Anyway, do the devs even check these threads a lot? Every page I've skimmed were just countless questions. I know they're busy developing the game and with their personal lives, I just haven't seen a dev post aside from the first page.

If any of the devs read this post: How's it going fellas?

Oooh I have a question! or maybe two!

If you could meet another game dev, who would it be?

What extinct game studio would you resurrect if you could?

What is your favorite type of cheese?

Would you prefer to work at Black Mesa or Aperture Laboratories?

Do you find that when you're working that it can be easy to get distracted or are you pretty focused? I'm working on a 32 level megawad for Doom 2 and at this point, especially after working on it for ages, it's pretty easy to get distracted and lose focus.

Several things - some Fallout 3 paraphernalia, a sackboy, Halo Reach monument/figure, my WoW character figureprint, and some programming and RPG books (including the epic Deathwatch CE)

As a programmer who works mostly on systems - not really. I don't see a ton of the content in the game before it comes out as the things I do see are either tests or small bits to reproduce and fix bugs.

1. Tim Sweeney
2. Hmm... hard one. Maybe Dynamix so they can make Tribes again. Or the original Volition that made Descent and Freespace.
3. Provolone!
4. Black Mesa - at least they don't have an evil computer running you through tests while laughing. Just mysterious upper management that intentionally messes with experiments to destroy the world. On second thought...
5. I find it pretty easy to 'get into a groove' where I'll just work on stuff for hours straight while not paying any attention to the time. Though some days it takes longer to get there then others

1. Whatever Kenny makes for me!
2. Make sure you learn the fundamentals - and try to learn more then one language at some point once you have a good handle on things. Learning more then one language (especially if it is drastically different then the one you've been taught) will give you interesting insights into how to solve problems in various ways and will help your programming skills in general.
3. Hasn't everyone?
4. Win7 and IE9 - sometimes Firefox 4

Hi Devs, keep up the great work! Just some questions that popped into my mind...

Are you a cat or dog person?

Is getting into the gaming industry extremely difficult?

What's your favorite race in TES games? And why?

What games are you guys looking forward to the most this year? (Other than SKYRIM, of course)

As far as story writing is concerned I know there is a lot of choices you could possibly have to account for. In a game this size, was there anything that you found most challenging while working out how the story would go, or since you've been doing it for such a long time it's just easy now?

My goal is to be a story writer one day, so any tips would be help as well thank you.

Would any of you guys be interested in doing some small developer blogs for Skyrim on things like "How we made the fog/flowing water work." or other small things?

This would be great for all of us who crave some new info all time, further insight into Skyrim, and would still save all the big reveal stuff you guys are wanting to do in the coming months.

Have you ever been so scared playing a game that you couldn't play it any more?

(Yes, I just saw the pic of that nasty spider you have in Skyrim :cold: )
