Meet the Devs #16

Post » Thu Oct 28, 2010 10:41 am

With Skyrim's announcement on Saturday, we're excited to open up our latest Bethesda Game Studios' Meet The Devs thread. This thread is your opportunity to get to know the developers working on Skyrim. Should be fun as you'll run into some familiar friends, as well as plenty of new folks to the team.

Please keep in mind this thread is NOT for asking questions to the developers related to Skyrim. There will be a time to ask questions, but not yet, and not in this series of threads. Our amazing forum moderators will keep an eye on posts that aren't in line with the theme of the thread.

Just wanted to post a quick hello to everyone on the forums. Thanks for being here and keeping TES going. Yes, we read a lot of it, and have been for a long time. It's great to finally see a "V - Skyrim" section on here along with Morrowind and Oblivion. Like you, we're fans too, and we're just as excited about this game. The whole team at BGS has been giving this their all for the last several years. The next 11 months should be fun, and this is a great place for the team to hear from you. No, we can't give away info early, so don’t bait us into trouble!

Thanks again for all your support, not just now, but for the last 16 years.

todd

First off, I just wanted to say you guys do an awesome job. No RPG has touched me personally in the ways Morrowind and Oblivion have. This forum account may be new, but my appreciation runs many years into the past. With the release date looming you'll be entering crunch time soon, if you haven't already, and I know how stressful that can get. So I just want you to know that we appreciate what you're doing and what you've done, and despite all the criticisms and backseat forum "developers," we'll love the end result no matter what. You guys are among the best.

So now that's out of the way...

How are you liking the new season of Doctor Who?

Have any of you ever worked on a game that you did not like? You dragged yourself to work everyday, and couldn't wait to just release it and be done? Have you and your team ever had to decide on something, and you wanted one thing, but they went another direction? Has this ever happened, where you completed dispised the decision that was made?

You guys only have to be as specific as that which will allow you to keep your jobs/heads, etc. :P

Ok I have a question that I am really wondering about, what viewing device (like monitor TV etc) do you all use to play your PC games on? IPS TV or monitor, TN LCD/LED monitor, CRT, DLP, a projector etc. What do you guy's personally prefer?

Ok weird question game design is very structured and seemingly fixated on making every action ordered as possible.
I know this is due largely to the fact the less structure, the more things can go wrong and make a game bugged beyond playability.

My question is this:
Outside of little frivolties like easter eggs and jokes, how much effort in the industry that you have knowledge of.
Has been looked at thinking off kilter and removing structure in games.
Just it seems no matter how large a game gets the patterns behind it show through, even that the larger it is the more likely you are to see them reoccur.

A questions for Vsions (repost from the old thread because it was locked shortly after posting it)

In the interview I read you worked on Dragon Age: Origins, which I loved so you get massive bonus points for that. What was your job there? Were you a character artists there as well? If I hear that you were responsible for the Alistair's awesomeness (one of the best video game characters ever IMO) then... then... I will give you my first virtual unborn! (I'm joking, I'm not that creepy :P)

Why cant Bethesda give their developers a little slack to say meaningful things about Skyrim or the game Lore on this thread?

I don't want to ask what they ate this morning...

I want to know if they think ahead to future games when writing the lore. Is there a greater overall plan for the franchise or are they taking it game by game.

I want to know why they chose Skyrim?

The devs dont have to give us spoilers, but at least something meaningful about the game we are all interested in

@Todd Howard

The quality of the interaction on this thread could be better Todd...if you are reading this, cut the guys some slack please

This is toward Thunderjunk, So i am at a community college studying architecture, but once i get a job and i dont like the field i have a backup plan.
I was thinking about going into game programing/Software/etc. since i love my 360 and PC, and to the point.
Since i would have graduated from Kirkwood i would rather go to a 4 year university.
So which college or 4 year University did you go to before you got hired by bethesda?

I have to say The Elder Scrolls has to be in my top 5 favorite games and it has influenced and inspired my creativity and how I think of games and their mechanics. I think I have at least 2000 times saved in Oblivion.

Although I was wondering if there any loyal Firefly fans at Bethesda?

Long live the brown coats!!!

One more thing just for the heck of it...team Edward or team Jacob?

I studied EE and Math (and film minor) at Southern Methodist University
I also got my Masters at the Guildhall at SMU

What is your favourite fantasy game, movie and/or book?

This is a half answer, but I'm a big fan of the Dresden Files (urban fantasy, but there it is). I'd love to do a game in that setting

To any dev who has worked on more than one elderscrolls/ bethesda game.

Do you feel like you have more creative freedom when working on Skyrim or are you more confined?

Fallout 3

Absolutely amazing
"Welcome to America..."

Have any of you ever worked on a game that you did not like?

Started to, so I quit that company and came here

How popular is DnD at the office? Do you guys ever get together and make Tamriel-themed campaigns? :P

Probably much more popular when we're not working so hard. Also, I tend to spend my free time on things far removed from what I'm working on

Did you forget about Mother's Day?

Oh, sh*t...

Why cant Bethesda give their developers a little slack to say meaningful things about Skyrim or the game Lore on this thread?

Because building up suspense and buzz is part of the game. If we told you everything that was going to be in it, you would start building up your own personal expectations that we could never meet (because a game/move/tv show will always be best in your head). Trust me, I've worked on games where they build up nothing and give everything away before the game comes out and it's not as good. Think about your favorite xmas present. I'm pretty sure you didn't see it coming.

Happy Mothers Day to Thunderjunk and all your dwarf babies.

Thanks, but I don't have any kids that I know of

Do any of you particularly enjoy horror games?

NO
