I think it quite a shame that the media goes on and on about how his behavior is over the top horrible but downplays the fact that he is diagnosed as bipolar which has everything to do with it all. A manic phase can be horrible:

Why do we treat sick folks so badly? Why do we hold them responsible even when they can not help themselves? Shouldn't he be getting help instead of having his most manic phases drug through the mud on national TV? Isn't he still a good actor? A good person who is sick? It makes me crazy that we hold mentally ill people accountable for their worst moments instead of directing or assisting to get them the help they need.
Because on the whole people these days think its easier to judge and go "ha ha look at the freak" it makes them feel a lot better about themselves "I may have problems but at lest I'm not that guy"
Although there is also an argument that celebrates make millions by being in the public eye so can't complain when the exposure works against them.
But yeah its well known poor Mel is actually ill and having a family member who is Bipolar I can tell you its not a whole lot of fun. And believe me in their more passive days they express some regret about what they say and do
I hope the people who are quick to jump and point the finger and judge and ridicule never have to deal with anything like this (although really I'm all for a bit of poetic justice).
