Melee get awesome weapons, mages get...?

Post » Tue Sep 20, 2011 4:15 am

I don't know about you guys, but whenever I play a RPG one of my favorite parts about it is collecting unique and powerful armor/weapons. My question and concern here is, are pure casters going to be able to use some kind of weaponry (staff?) to maybe amplify their magic or boost their stats? I would like to play a mage, but being able to get some crazy 1 handed swords to dual wield with on a warrior/rogue sounds too good to pass up.

You can wield a staff to cast spells.

But mages get spells. That you cast instead of hitting things. If you prefer hitting things, try being a warrior. Or a conjurer-type thing.

Mages collect powerful spells and staffs the same way warriors would collect weapons. Plus mages can enchant items.

So i'm assuming the staffs that are collected are going to be far better than the ones in oblivion, right?

Dual wield spells, dual wielding staffs, staff in one hand spell in the other... Plus your hands look cool when they're on fire, frozen, etc. There's your cool weapons right there :).

Meaning...?

Meaning, if I am going to use a staff in my hand, (which will cancel out using a spell) then it will be just as powerful or more than the spell I could have used in that hand?

Everyone who has played the game has said the magic is the best part so far, and is fantastic. Not to mention that mages can enchant and summon more powerful weapons.

I suppose that will depend on the staff and the spell.

Probably wont know until the game is released and we can see for ourselves, we still haven't seen any offensive magic staves yet.

Sounds pretty good. I'm going to guess that some of the more powerful staffs that use destructive spells will require a high destruction skill to use. That way you don't have warriors running around shooting fireballs that a master mage would be envious of.

That would somewhat defeat the point of a staff.

So someone who has never cast a destruction spell will be able to use powerful spells? So if I never dual wielded swords and equip two will I be able to do damage with it on par with someone who leveled up their dual wielding?

Seeing as how there are decent robes this time around. (With decent effects on Magika and Casting. E.g. "Reduced Conjuration Costs")
I would not doubt some seriously OP robes or armors.
Just a guess though.

Swords require swinging.

A staff doesn't require knowledge of magic to use. It only has a limited number of uses (until you have to recharge it), so it's basically like a scroll that you can use a bunch.

I'm really not sure why you have a problem with it.
